| Good catch Arnie, What part of the river were you fishing ???
I went a couple of weeks ago and couldn't hook a thing in the
river, although people were catching them all around us. What
technique were you using ? We were more successful out in the
lake with jplugs.

WOW !!! ALL THESE QUESTIONS....
OK....FIRST,THERE WAS NO SNOW IN PULASKI ITSELF,AS FAR AS I KNOW!!!
WE LEFT AT 8am AND IT WAS FREEZING COLD BUT NO SNOW...THEY WERE
EXPECTING SOME..
SECOND.. WE FISHED WAY UP RIVER IN PINEVILLE AREA,ON ROUTE 48 UNDER
THE BRIDGE.. A LOT OF FISHERMEN,BUT A LOT OF FISH,TOO!!!!!!
I SAW ONE STEELHEAD CAUGHT AND NO KINGS OR BROWNS.... A LOT OF MALES
ARE GETTING CAUGHT BECAUSE THE FEMALES ARE STILL ARE THE MOUTH OF
THE RIVER..
THERE WAS A LOT FISH BEING TAKEN AT THE BLACK HOLE IN PULASKI,BUT
I CAN'T FISH ELBOW TO ELBOW LIKE THEY DO THERE..
IF YOU HAVE ANY MORE QUESTIONS CALL ME,I'LL BE HAPPY TO ANSWER THEM.

494.4 | COLD AIR, HOT FISHING!! | MAPLE::BATES | NUKES...May they rust in peace! | Mon Oct 05 1987 14:49 | 15 |

Fished the river on the 3 & 4th. Had probably 25 fish on, but
managed to land only 2. I think 17 lb test and fairly high water
had something to do with it. The area we fished was on route 5
probably 2 miles west of Pulaski. It costs $$ (4/car + 1/person)
but I've always had good luck there. Saw 3 steelies caught, about
7-8 lbers. There were a few browns caught, nice colors. The weather
was wet on Saturday, beautiful on Sunday. Temps avg'd about 40-45.
We stayed in a tent and it wasn't all that bad. If you're heading
over this weekend it should be good.
Good Luck,

| -< FINE FISHING FOR SOME >-
A friend of mine went up to Pulaski around the end of Sept. He caught
some nice fish the biggest Salmon being 32 lb's , 45" long.
I just can't get into the fishing mood by standing shoulder to shoulder
around a pool trying to snag fish, but thats just my opinion.

494.6 | HAVE TO AGREE SOMEWHAT!! | AMULET::VALOIS | | Wed Oct 07 1987 09:17 | 12 |
| I HAVE TO AGREE WITH YOU ON THE PACIFIC SALMON. THE MAJORITY OF
SALMON TAKEN ARE SNAGGED,BUT THEY ARE GOING TO SPAWN AND DIE ANYWAY
BUT THEY ARE ALOT OF FUN TO HOOK INTO AND PLAY WITH FOR AWHILE.THE
REAL CHALLENGE IS WITH THE STEELHEAD AND BROWNS. BOTH SPECIES CAN
RUN TO 20 LBS. OR BETTER, AND THEY DO BITE WELL!!! AS I HAVE STATED
IN THESE NOTES BEFORE,STEELHEAD ARE THE MOST FIGHTINGEST FISH THAT
SWIM. ONCE YOU'VE GOTTEN INTO THEM A FEW TIMES,YOU'LL BE HOOKED
FOR LIFE. AS FAR AS THE SHOULDER TO SHOULDER FISHING GOES, IT DOES
TEND TO GET HECTICK, BUT AS LONG AS YOUR GETTING INTO THESE FISH
WHO CARES.

| Since you are talking about salmon, this might be an appropriate
place to let you know of the record run that is going on in the
northwest.
Right now the four year olds are coming in the bay and are running
in the 50-60 pound range. I went out last weekend and caught a
25# hen, but there were a lot of people there catching them with
some of them going up to 60#. I read in the paper where there was
a 70# caught, but they couldn't confirm it.
This is a classic example of good game management as 6 yrs ago they
thought the salmon run in the west would never recover as it was
down so low. Now they manage it so well, we are having more salmon
in the rivers thean ever recorded. They will close the Columbia
down at times to allow those salmon that are headed for Idaho, Montana,
and Wyoming to get through unmolested.

I went doen to Oswago (spelling?) and did fine! I hooked between
25 nd 30 fish and landed about 12. All fish were released but 2.
I did snag a few but very few.. I did see some nice browns come
out up to about 10 pounds.I also saw some steel head's but not as
many.
I was under the impression that these salmon were chinooks not
Coho's. The group I was with did well with fish up to 56 pounds.

re. 10
Call 1-315-298-5560. They should be able to tell you whats
going on over there. It's getting kinda late for the salmon, but
maybe you'll get into some browns or steelies.

494.12 | PLENTY OF SALMON!! | AMULET::VALOIS | | Fri Oct 16 1987 09:14 | 9 |
| THE SALMON RUN WAS AT ITS PEEK IN THE SALMON RIVER LAST WEEK! THE
SNAGGING SEASON FOR THEM ENDED YESTERDAY 10/15.,SO YOU'LL HAVE TO
FISH FOR THEM NOW!! THERE STILL SHOULD BE PLENTY OF SALMON AROUND
FOR AT LEAST ANOTHER WEEK OR SO. TRY UPSTREAM IN THE SALMON RIVER.
LAST WEEK A LOT OF BIG HENS HAD JUST ENTERED THE RIVER. WHEN THE
SALMON FISHING DROPS OFF,THE STEELHEAD SEASON IS JUST GETTING
UNDERWAY!! PLENTY OF FISH IN RIVER THROUGHOUT THE FALL AND WINTER
MONTHS!!
GOOD LUCK, AND KEEP US POSTED ON YOUR RESULTS.DOPOFRPY

| I was up to salmon this past weekend and the fish are diffinitly
in the river, they have made it up to the fish hatchery, only
problem the river is in flood stage because of the resivior so they
are supposed to leave at least one gate open for about another 30
days, but every one is still catching fish.

| Try calling the New York State Conservation Hot Line @ 607-753-1551.
The reports are recorded messages and include not only the conditions
in the rivers and lakes but also what the fish are most actively
taking for bait... Good Luck, when you get back from your trip
let us all know how you did up there.... I'll be heading that way
on the 18th and would like to hear about the hot spots....
