476.0. "info needed on Green Harbor, Mass" by GORT::JOYCE () Wed Sep 16 1987 10:14

I'm thinking of doing some tuna fishing in Cape Cod Bay this
weekend. I need some information about Green Harbor.

Is there a launching ramp there? Is it in good condition, I
have a 21 ft boat and a 2 wheel drive truck. I'll be heading out
early in the morning, around 6:00. is this a problem.

Is there a marina where I can get fuel, gas and a slip for a night.

    Thanks
    Steve

476.1try state ramp in plymouth.CUERVO::GATHWed Sep 16 1987 12:049
In my opinion the best place to launch in that area is actually
at plymouth state launch. The only problem I have with it is
it gets to much use by people who don't know what there doing.

I have launched at a private launch in Green Harbor but it
wasn't the best. Green habor Marine I think. They sell
    Grady White.

Yes you shouldn't have any problem getting gas etc.
476.2Tuna Fishing Anyone?JAWS::DEZZANIFri Sep 18 1987 17:4313
I can't help you on your original question but I am interested in
how you made out fishing. I have tried Yellow fin tuna fishing
off block Island. Caught one last year but was skunked this year.

Tuna fishing appears to be a art since some boats caught them when
no one else did. I was fishing with a friend and we had a number
of strikes but did not hook up. Unfortunately we now know what
we did wrong, I guess we'll have to wait until next year.

There is generally a good month of fishing in my area and they usually
run 50-100 lbs. Good to eat also. Any one into this sport should
let me know, perhaps we can set up a trip next season. I have a
22 ft Sun Runner and love to run off the Block.
476.3Tuna FeverSMURF::AMATOMon Sep 21 1987 15:3315
Hi there. Glad to see someone else with tuna fever in my area. This was my
rookie tuna season off Block. We picked up a 24' grady white this year, our
first big boat, and tried some tuna hunting. Had a great season. Eight
in the boat, and dropped/broke off between 12 and 15! I flyfish for trout
and salmon, surfcast for blue's and stripers, but once I hooked my first tuna
I became hooked. I've never seen such strength in a fish. Maybe next season,
I'll meet you out there and we can team up and get you into some. I learned
some really neat tricks and am always looking for more. I've got a question,
do you know if they're still around down there (I'm in NH, but the boat's
in Ct.)? I want to try one last time this season, but haven't heard any
reports lately. I can't/won't go to the canyon with my boat, so I'm looking
for something inside the 40 fathom line, have you heard anything? Hoping
to see you off Block.

The tuna are/were still around before the blow of last weekend.
The party boats out of Hampton N.H. had been seeing quite a few
on Jeffries. Most seem to be the small footballs, only a few hundred
pounds. The guys chumming or trolling for them haven't had very
good luck. They think there's to much bait in the bay.

There are a few fish being take in Cape Cod bay. I here there's
no bait there so the tuna may feed if you get them under your boat
in a chum line. The guys catching the fish down there seem to be
using live bait, whiting. The problem is catching the live bait.
These guys have draggers and make a few hour tow to get live
    fish for hook bait.

As to where to fish, I've never fish in Cape Cod bay. I do have
several friends down there right now and have been getting some
    reports.

I plan to give the bay a try again this week, Thurs- Sunday.

Just wondering if you were able to get out tuna fishing last week?
I heard that about 20 were taken the sometime over the last 2 weeks,
and a lot of the whale watching boats are seeing plenty of tuna.
I might be able to give it one last shot (my last one last shot
was cancelled) in about 2 weeks, so I'm anxious to hear what you
    found out.

I tried to fish Thurs-Sunday last week. But the weather didn't look
very good. A lot of wind. So we decided to fish close to home to
    be on the safe side.
Thursday we fished about 13 miles from Hampton. We caught 2 Blue
Dogs, but no Tuna. We did have several in our chum line for 2 hours.
We tried everything to get them to bite the hook. As soon as the
chum would sink out of sight, you would see the fish on the
    depthfinder.
Friday, we tried to catch some live whiting for hook bait. Well
we had all the live bait we needed, but the wind kept us from getting
    offshore.
Saturday was the same story, we started out for the northwest corner
around 35 miles from Hampton, but turned around when we got just
south of Cape Ann. The wind was blowing around 20-30 from the
    southwest.
Sunday, was the same story, headed for the nw corner, but the wind
started again out of the north so we truned around and fished at
the same spot as Thursday. One Blue Shark, some small jumping tuna.

So I guess the way the weekend weather looks (several cold fronts)
we get to do it all over again.

I think I need a bigger boat, in fact, its for sale.

476.7New to Fishing notesTOOK::SWEETThu Oct 01 1987 10:4715
    Hi,

I am new to fishing notes, but not to fishing! I have a 21 ft Chris
Craft which I tailer. I have fished mostly inshore for Cod and Blues
but have been out to both Jeffries and Stellewagon when the weather
is right. Have been blown out the last three weeks except a quick
trip off block, wanted bonita but ended up catching scup off clay
head (sea's were 8-12 ft, no fun at all!). Anyway, I am planning
a trip for either inshore cod (around Salem), offshore cod (jeffries)
or maybe some tuna if some one can help me out with some TD's as
to where to look for them. I can help someone with some good cod
spots around salem (very fishable unless there is a hard NE Blow).

476.8any extra help ?SMURF::AMATOThu Oct 01 1987 15:4410
Sorry the weather didn't cooperate. I heard about a 440lb yellowfin
taken off of night ledge sometime in the last week. What were you
using for bait and where did you get it. The guy I might be going
with is Bruce, in .7 Any hints on some areas we might look for
some bluefin? I've though about bringing my boat up here, but the
tuna season's too short. So I'll just have to see if I can talk
Bruce in to giving them a shot ;-)! Anyway, if there's anything
you can let me know about that might help in finding them, I've
got some ideas on making them bite if I can find'em and what they're
    feeding on. Thanks.

If I were going fishing in Cape Cod bay, looks like this weekend
is going to be another BLOWout, I'd fish around Fishing Ledge.
You can't miss the place, its on the chart right in the middle of
the bay, north of Barnstable. There are around 200 boats fishing for
bluefin all over the bay. They set up chumming fleets almost anywhere
in the mud around the bay. Find a fleet near fishing ledge and anchor.
But give these guys some room. You can chum with anything, mackeral,
herring, whiting, or blue fish. If you can get live bait, use that
on your lines. I hear that a small live blue is a sure winner if
the tuna come through. If no live ones, then fish with a herring
    tail.

Good luck, maybe I'll see you there if they blow the forcast.
15-25 southwest may not be too bad in the south part of the bay.
I don't know, not ever fished there.
There have been a few fish caught, the guys from the Hampton/Seabrook
have been doing OK. One guy went 41 straight days without a fish,
he caught 6 fishs last week. Around $40K. But you have to go every
    day.

I don't know if we'll get down towards Fishing Ledge or not. But
can you give me a general idea of where you head off of Hamnpton?
I was looking at my charts last night, and it looked like the Cove
or Old Scantum(?) might not be too bad. That way if the tuna aren't
cooperating, we can still look for some cod.

On another note, have you tried any of the party boat fishing at
the canyon for tuna? A few of us up here are thinking of giving
it a shot in a few weeks, if they're still getting anything. Last
reports that I heard was bigeye to 250, and yellowfin around 100.
I'm just not sure about the long ride, 5 hours in the boat, and
the expense, $130. If you don't catch anything, that's 2 days of
travel and $$$. Oh well, that's fishing!

The place I fished many times this year is called the outside flag.
I don't have the TD's here. Its an oval shaped ledge SW of Old
Scantum. To the NNW is another ledge that has a high spot of 142
ft. An other spot to try is called Halfway. Its a high spot north
of cape ann. They have been seeing tuna all week just south of the
    Isles of Sholes.

I've never tried party fishing for tuna, no one in NH does it.

    Steve

If you need the TDs real bad for the Outside Flag, give me a call
    at home. 603-926-5177.
476.12hmmmm. where should my boat liveSMURF::AMATOThu Oct 08 1987 14:5217
Steve, have you popped any tuna up this way ever? And how long
does the tuna season run up here? My boat is way down in Conn, and
that's about a 2 1/4 hr drive each way. Then to get out to Block
Isle sound to start fishing, it's another 1 1/2 - 2 hour run in
the boat. That means a real looong day after cleanup and drive
home. Danvers Port, where I'm thinking of moving my boat to, is
cheaper than my marina, and only about 45 minutes (if I've got the
VW), but I don't know what kind of tuna season we've got up this
way. Down there, the giants show up from the begining to mid July
for a few weeks, and then the yellowfin show up from the end of
July, into Sept, and then the football bluefin run from mid Sept
until the first good blow. How does that compare with up here?

    Thanks,
    trying to decide

The bluefin show up around the same time, July and stay into November.

    Never seen a yellowfin.
