475.0. "FALL STOCKING OF TROUT ? ?" by NUGGET::BICKES () Wed Sep 16 1987 00:53

Does anybody know if they made a fall stocking of trout, They
usually start about now. And where they stock, I heard that
alot of the lake are high in the acid scale so they might make
a smaller stocking this fall. The fish & game people have a
list where, but he said that they weren't done yet & the list
will be made in October sometime. Help, Help thanks 9Xx.

I was talking to the guys doing the stockings this past
spring and was told they weren't going to do a fall stocking
this year. Something about all the trouble they had with the
water conditions this year, so they decided to scrap the fall
stocking. If this has changed, I'd surely like to know so I
    	can get out there...

RE: .1 Where did you hear the stockings were going to start
    	next week? What areas, etc.?

Don't know how recent or reliable the info is, but in last Sunday's
local paper, the outdoors columnist mentioned that fall stockings
in WMass would begin after the completion of the "Big E". That's
    10 days away.

anyone been out there trying.......I have a kitchen pass for this

Yep, they stocked. I've been out twice, with the first
time being not fishing myself and the last I limited out
in 20 minutes. The fish were all 16+" with the biggest one
just a little over two pounds.

Somehow I missed the base-note and the version of VAXNotes (DECWINDOW notes)
is a bit flaky. What pond are we talking about here? What species were
those 16"ers?

Thanks,

Those fish are trout, probably rainbows, brown and brookies. This
is what Ma. stocks in there ponds and rivers in the spring and fall.
The best way to find out what has been stocked near your home is
to call the Division of Fisheries and Wildlife. They will tell
    you.
I am going to Browning this weekend I know they put some trout
in there just for my smoker.

Are all the trout-fisher people only from Mass.? Has
anyone heard of any stocking in N.H.? The person a
couple of notes back stating getting his limit in 20
minutes, all over 16" and 1 at the 2 lb. mark.....
That is some incredible fishing to say the least!!!
What kind of bait were you using and did you catch
these in the lake or right out of the stocking truck?

NH doesn't have a fall trout season, let alone a fall stocking program.

About the same time the salmonoids come up top, the season closes.

Trout fishing is illegal in NH now (and has been for a month or so),
accept in non-designated trout waters - of which that contain trout
    are few and far between.

donmac - who wished that NH stocked more rainbows in more water and
    	     allowed fall fishing.

Not to disagree with Don, but I disagree. :-)

NH does have limited fall stockings of trout. They do not occur on nearly the
same scale as the spring stockings, but generally involve larger fish. The
idea is to allow the fish to make it through the winter before seeing their
first real pressure. I know they did this on the Nissitissit with brown trout
last year. The only way to find out about any fall stockings on a local river
or pond is to talk to the local conservation officer. Calling Concord does
little good; they don't seem to be too informed!

> Trout fishing is illegal in NH now (and has been for a month or so),

I thought you could fish the rivers and streams through natural openings year
'round (but I don't have my handy-dandy pocket fishing guide to refer to.)

Except for those listed as exceptions, streams and rivers in N.H. are
closed to all fishing after Oct. 15.
