469.0. "A1/Mill Pond,Westboro...Stump City" by STOWMA::LANGE (Random Sex in a Boston Club...) Tue Sep 08 1987 09:58

Went to A1 Site this weekend...
Lot's of activity, but not on the end of my Ugly Stik...;-(
Just a 12 incher on a Dare Devil.

The guy in the canoe fishing in the same spot(relatively),got a
nice 4 pounder on a top water buzz bait...and had caught a number
of them while I sat and watched..I spoke with him,and he was using
    the s l o w retrieve method,up and over logs,and stumps...
If you've been to A1, thats all there is.

jeff, just a opinion, if you use a ugly stik in the a1a site then
good luck. try pulling a 5lber over a log with 8lb test and a ugly
stik and you will usually have a broken line. to fish this place
you should use a baitcaster with at least 12lb test to haul those
big boys over and around logs.this place has got big fish and i
hate to hear about those big ones getting away. in my opinion ugly
stiks are just not sensitive enough to feel those little hits. i
bought one 2 years and lost some good fish with it. i just couldn't
seem to set the hook hard enough with it without it bending all
the way over " result bad hook set". i now use this rod for lake
trout. hope you don't mind my opinion.

    good luck,
ps i will probably be going there saturday.i'll be in a green canoe,
if you see me give me a holla.

    I don't mind your opinion...Thanks....

You wouldn't happen to have a green fiberglass Great Canadian 14',and
    a white van would you?

Why don't we meet there, and go out to the blinds, beyond the Herron
nests...that's where the action was yesterday....
I'm going to bring a different rod this time...
BTW gwine fishin' there ALL next week...little autumn vacation

we can talk about going out either sunday or during the week. i
can usually go out anytime except on wensday.

Well, the weeds are finally gone, just clumps floating around.
fishing for me there has been very slow but it should be picking
up there now. i have been hearing that top water buzz baits and
perpella baits have been getting them but nothing in size.
i think the people that are catching the 5lbers+ are taking them
home . if you see this happen sink their boat.

    good luck, mark
469.6A-1 spot that worked for meVAXINE::BACZKOFri Sep 25 1987 16:5112
    TCDW,
There is a weed bed to the left of the dirt ramp ( looking out
at the water) about 50 yards or so, maybe less. There is a small
cove there with reeds on the shore line. Try that I have had some
luck yearlier in the year. The creek bed runs from the dam to
the left side of the island. That was the only drop of I could
find in that pond, we got a few 2 lbers. by the island/creek bed.
Good luck, and tell us how it was.

Actually, sorry to hear about the hole. The only help I can offer
is probable try using fiberglas as a repair method. Use the matting
and apply it to the inside of the boat. If this isn't enough (cause
the hole is to big, or the plastic is thin) apply some of the matting
on the outside also. Make sure you put the matting and fiberglas
at least 4" all around the hole inside and out.

    				Good Luck

    Gary,

What did ya do?, take RR's motor off the Ranger and put it on the
Crawdad? I thought those things had a fairly thick "hull/skin"

For a 7" hole you musta been cruising!

    Ok you asked for it.

I took an industrial strength reciprocating saw and cut the godam
    hull.

You see it was like this-- I found another transom setup from a
crashed CRAWDAD and decided it would be cool to have a transom
on the front just like the one on the back. Yep gas on the back
and electric on the front. In order to fit the transom I need to
cut the front deck back about 3/4". GREAT IDEA! Get the biggest
saw I can find and cut through 3/32" of plastic. "hey Ron gimme
an extension cord for this thing".
The saw did a great job of slicing through the plastic deck AND
7" of the HULL at the same time.

Maybe I should have used a CHAIN SAW!

    Sounds fishy to me...
I bet you filled that thing up with brewski's an headed over A1A,and
by *accident* you hit a hidden stump. With all the weight from
the beer,a stump poked a hole in yer' boat.

469.18Ice-In Question.SONATA::LANGEThe things I do for money...Tue Oct 06 1987 10:163
How safe would it be to fish A1A during the winter?
Would the water freeze thick enough around the heavy "stump" areas,or
would the ice fishing have to be done in the open water by the dam?
469.19YAZOO::M_MESSIERTue Oct 06 1987 10:459

they have quite a few derbys during the winter, and the ice is very
thick. i have seen the ice over a foot thick, thick enough to drive
a car on. from what i have seen most people fish the open area.
a lot of four lbers are taken through the ice, along with some
    good size pickrel.

ps that pond can be the coldest place you'll ever want to go

Chuck, check out note 555.64, it lists all the notes related to
Mass fishing. There are three notes there that talk about the A-1.
They are 6.*, 21.*, and one titled "Pond behind westboro speedway"

chuck ther A1 site is excellent for bass, at one time it was part of my
area as a game warden. the bass run on an average of 2-4 lbs, it also
was excellent duck hunting. with westboro's laws against hunting i dont
know if they're laws can be enforced as the a1 site belongs to the feds
