459.0. "Fishing ONTARIO "The Big O"" by DUNCAN::SILK () Wed Aug 26 1987 15:00

                          FISHING THE BIG "O"

Enough of fishing for these "hawgs",has anyone gone to lake
Ontario to fish for some real fish, like the elusive "KING"

I was their last weekend (20th-23rd).We only got to fish a few
hours on thursday,4 to 6 footers out on the lake. There was a couple
of green people on board.Friday we had a beautiful day the lake
was laid right down.We boated a 30+ pound chinook,10lb coho and
lost three other kings. All the fish came off a two tone green
dodger with a two tone green sqiud,140-220 foot of water 95-110ft
down on the rigger. We were fishing out of sandy pond NY.Needless
to say we got blown off the lake sat. and sun. 8 to 10 footers.

I'm heading back again this weekend for four days.Hope the weather
    cooperates.

You got that right, Kevin!! One of those 30 lb'ers make those
so called "HAWGS" we hear so much about look like a minnow.
I guess they might be good fish to use for practice, but thats
about it. I heading over Sept. 11-13 in search of the "KING",
and hopefully I'll do as well as last year. It's a fairly long
    trip, but well worth it.

Any of you Flatlanders into fishing the big ones??????

Just came back from the Big O 15,16 excellent weather both days.
But, charter broke down after two hours of fishing score 2 lakers
5-7 lb class, 1 steelhead 4 lbs, 1 king 22 lbs. By the way that
day just about every boat that came in had 5 kings on board ranging
17+ , also lost a real nice steelhead 10-12 lb came out of the water
a dozen times or so and finally spit the hook. Day 2 results, not
as active but still prosperous 4 lakers 4-8 lb, 1 rainbow 4 lb,
    1 stelhead 6 lb, 3 kings, 1-8lbs,1-22lbs,1-30 lbs. 3 of the 4 kings
were males the 30 pounder was a female. Ihad my fish sent out to
be mounted and will be on display at the Centrum at the expo. The
charter was Top Line out of Sodus Bay but we fished out of Point
Breeze, Kent,N.Y. . I'm definetly going back next year and I may
    also try in the spring.

    Guy,
I'm going up this weekend for my first trip to the Big O.
It sounds like you killed them while you were there !!!
Any advice as to lures, depths, areas techniques etc. ?
I haven't decided where I'll be staying yet and will be
trailering my boat with me. Thanks in advance for any info,

    Marty,

If your going for kings, you have two options right now. The kings
are starting to head into the Salmon river right now. You'll find
them near the mouth in 10-30 feet of water. Their usually right
of bottom. My wife took a 28lb out of 21 ft. of water last Sunday.

You can also find some out deep in 200 ft. 70-110 down. The problem
with deep fishing is if you are going out of Mexico you have a long
water trip to get to the deep water. That Lake was miserable last
Saturday. The waves went from 3-4 footers to 8-10 within 30 minutes.
I heard several people calling the coast guard and several reports
of boats being thrown up on the rocks when they attempted to get
in. Be prepared to get tossed around at a moments notice!!!

The lures that are working appear to be anthing thats green, dodgers
& squid, NK's with a green stripe etc. Theres been reports of plain
silver doing well also. The bottom line is to be where the fish
    are when their hungry.

ps.
If you don't have a VHF I hope you at least have CB.
You never know when you'll need it!

Thanks for the tips Fred. I don't have a cb or vhf yet.
The vhf is a definite addition, the only problem is I
keep thinking of the shouts of joy my girl friend had
when I mentioned I was going to get one "Great, now I can
make phone calls all over when ever I get bored when
    we're fishing!!!".

Is there a sheltered bay that has some decent
fishing in it, or maybe a smaller lake close by
we can trailer to incase we get blown off the big lake ???
I feel semi safe in six footers but 8-10 is out of my
    league in a 19ft boat.

Congratulations to your wife on the 28lb king. How many
pound test line do you use when you fish for them ? I
think my 8lb stuff has to come off tonight or I won't
land anything I get on this weekend !

I like to use 15lb in the spring and 20lb in the fall. The 8lb. most
likely will get stripped off your real on the first run.

If you go to Sodus you can fish in the harbor when the waters rough.
You can also go north on rt 3 to Henderson Harbor. I don't think
there are any small lakes around there. Well I gota get going.

    Good luck and Happy Fishing,

So what advice do you guys have for fishing the Salmon river?? Since
I won't be able to fish the lake till next year, I figured I'd at
least get a little action from the "KING" as it starts it's final
journey. I need to know about tackle, hot spots, techniques, and
whatever else you have to offer. We'll be heading over on the 11th,
    so let me know ASAP...

I caught my largest fish to date this past weekend on Ontario.
22lb king salmon. I know it's small by their standards, but
it was quite a thrill for me. Also picked up a 7.5lb brown.
    I lost a bunch more. I'm already planning a return trip !!!

Went over and fished the Salmon River this past weekend. Water was
down on Saturday and the place was loaded with fish. I caught my
limit within an hour and played for the rest of the day. Most of
the Kings were around 25 lbs and I caught one 8 lb brown. All
totaled, I had about 25 fish on. Sunday was totally different,
no fish at all were being caught. I guess ya just gotta be there
at the right time. I realize it probably isn't like fishing the
lake, but it sure as hell is fun!!!!!

Also got back from fishing the salmon river this past weekend.
Like Rene said the river was black with them on sat. but not much
action on sun.,to much rain the water was murky you couldn't see
them.We ended up with sixteen KINGS on Sat,and we were off the
    river by noon.
The weekend of the 19th should be one of the better weekends as
far as silver fish and fish in the river. We got alot of rain while
we were there,so they should be able to regulate the water now.
All done for this year, long winter till spring browns and steelies

459.17methods used ?MTBLUE::ROBBINS_GARYThey say the heart of rock and roll is the beat-en !Fri Sep 18 1987 06:296
I have heard that there is a legal "snagging" season on the Salmon
River...allowed by law for folks to take these fish that will die
after spawning anyway...seems they get all the "seed" they need
for the hatchey and let the rest go to the snaggers ! Were you
fellows catching these fish in a sportsman like manner, or were
    you snagging ?
459.18I'm a lifter,not a snagger!!MAPLE::BATESNUKES...May they rust in peace!Fri Sep 18 1987 07:3812

There are two methods used in different areas on the river. In
one section you can use a weighted treble hook, which is what is
called "snagging". This is allowed up near the dam when the fish
are half dead anyway. In the other sections of the river, you
use a single hook with a 24" leader with your weight above the
leader. This is the method I used. I wouldn't get caught dead
up in the snagging area, the way those wahoos swing those weights
around. The area I fished in was between Port Ontario and Pulaski.

459.19MTBLUE::ROBBINS_GARYThey say the heart of rock and roll is the beat-en !Sat Sep 19 1987 03:5418
What I'm getting to is that the fish you are catching are not taking
a lure, fly, or bait. Rather, you are imbedding a hook in a part
of the fishes body other than the mouth. I used to do this with
suckers in the springtime. It was great fun as a kid, but not very
    challenging.

Don't these fish "take" flies, lures, bait ? Is the only method
to "lift" or "snag" ? It doesn't seem very sporting...

I realize that the fishery was created for the anglers, and that
it's perfectly legal to take fish via these methods, and that they
get plenty of seed for the future runs. So I'm not flaming or putting
you down, just wondering if there might be a more sporting way to
    catch these big fish.

Are the lifting/snagging methods allowed all season long or just
certain parts of the season ? Also, are these methods allowed for
    steelhead ?

While snagging is not sporting (but good for putting meat on
the table; the fish are dying anyways) the 'lifting' is in fact
a means of hooking a fish in the mouth, foul hooked fish must
be released (under severe penalty of the law). This is closely
monitored by 'plain clothes' game wardens. In general, the
tackle used is a single hook with a salmon egg on it. The weight
is used to get the hook to the bottom through the current of the
river, since the fish collect at the bottoms of pools.

I got this information first hand, but that was 3 years ago. Please
correct me if the regs have changed.

Well, I'm heading back to Ontario this weekend for 3 days. I new
I wouldn't be able to hold out for long...Does anyone know what
should be happening ??? Do the Kings fade out rapidly as it gets
closer to October or are they still around for awhile ? What
about steelheads, cohos and browns. Where can they be found ?
I'll be fishing the lake again. I just couldn't get into the
river fishing. It's funny...before going there I thought it was
kind of sickening when I heard about all the people snagging
fish. After seeing it in person and talking with some of the locals
it doesn't bother me anymore. The fish die anyway, as has already
been said, and lots of people count on the fish to help out the
food budget for the year. I just can't tolerate the crowds while
I'm trying to fish (or lift/snag).

459.23between route 3 and the big OCUERVO::GATHWed Sep 23 1987 12:0022
Well marty you can still fish the rivers and avoid the big crouds.

It has been a few years since I have been there and if the regulations
haven't changed much then hear is what you can do.

You use to be allowed to fish between route three and the lake on
*most* the streams and rivers, but no snagging is allowed.

single hook, no lifting, all fish must be hooked in the mouth.

We normally would have the place to ourselves and there were
plenty of fish. The crouded areas are the Snagging areas and
    most of the samon river.

South Sandy, and north Sandy just to name a few had excelent
fishing and often we wouldn't see but one or two other anglers
    all day.

These are exceptionally good areas for steelhead in the fall.
The month of November use to be good to us.

    re .20

No reason to get p'd off. I do plenty of "sportmanlike" fishing
all summer long and can understand what you're saying. But, I also
like the feel of playing a 30 lb fish, which I don't get to do to
often on Lake Champlain. I also don't have a boat large enough to
fish on the BIG O, so I fish the river. It may not be the "right"
way, but since they're going to die anyway, what the hell. I really
don't need to hear the "unsportsmanlike" BS.

Like the guy in .22 said, Its meat on the table, and I happen to
like to catch and eat Salmon. You do it your way and I'll do it
    mine

You do it your way I'll do it mine. Those are good words of advice.

However don't set your standards too low. Those fish may not feed
but I know for a fact that can and are hooked with a single hook
in the mouth. I have done and my friends have done it.

agreed it takes a great deal longer and the presentations are made
over and over but if your persistant that fish ( king and coho )
will mouth single hook offerings and bingo set the hook and look
    out.

Bigest fish we caught this way was a 30 pd king on a mepps ( which)
    we modified with single hook.

I know it takes more work but then again you won't have to put
up with the crouds in the snatching areas.

I am heartened to hear there are places on these rivers where the
above "fishing techniques" are not condoned...as I too would like
to play a few 20-30 # fish someday...and may very well have the
    chance this fall.

ISNT there some concern about eating these fish due the high level
of deadly Neurotoxins (YUM YUM) and exotic chemicals (tasty tasty)

    Rich,

Two of the places I stayed at are Wigwam, Sandy Pond
    315-387-3001
It is like a hotel with rooms up stairs and a bathroom
at the end of the hall. (Actually there were more than one
    bathroom.

The food there was good and at the time it was cheap lodging
The rates then ( several years ago ) was 5.00 a night. I know it
    has gone up

The other place I stayed at was

    Reeds retreat. 315-387-5150
This was a very nice apartment that would sleep about
6 comfortably and we were able to have breakfast in the apt.
It was a little more expensive but much nicer.
One problem with reed reeds retreat was that it is primarly
used as lodging for one of the captains running a boat in that area

so his clients had preferance and it isn't easy to get reservations
here unless you fish for steelhead. Steelhead fisherman fish in
the winter when everone else is snuggled up to warm fire.

    HI,

Any suggestions on what to use on Lake Onterio? I will be going
to Lake Onterio August 10,11,12,13 on the Canada side in which we
charted two boats. I heard that there is great fishing up there
and I would like to hear some pro and cons about fishing up there
for nothern pike and king salmon.

    					regards,

Just got back from my first trip to the Big O. Count myself among
the converts. I'm hooked, plain and simple.
I trolled out of Sodus Bay on Friday, absolutely nothing happening.
By the time we came back to the dock, there were King Salmon jumping
everwhere. Needless to say, we fished off the dock for the next
day and a half. We were able to land 12 kings (hooked many more)
all between 20 to 30 pounds. What a rush to have a 25 pound king
rip off a couple hundred yards of 12 pound test. Each fish took
between 1/2 and 3/4 of an hour to land. The locals said the fish
should be in for the next couple weeks. Can't wait for the photo's
    to come back.

One other thing, and I don't mean to put anyone down either. All
the locals up there were super friendly. This place really caters
to the fisherman. Unlike Maine, where they just as soon have you
leave your $ in a box at the state line and then tell you to go
    home.

    Later
    Brian

                        BETTER LATE THAN NEVER
I HAVE BEEN FISHING LAKE ONTARIO FOR FIVE YEARS AND HAVE NOT BEEN
DISSAPOINTED YET. FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE NOT BEEN TO THE BIG
"O", AND ARE SERIOUS FIN-ATICS ABOUT FISHING, I STRONGLY SUGGEST
    THAT YOU MAKE THE TRIP.
WE ALWAYS STAY AT THE CATFISH CREEK FISH CAMPS. THIS IS A COMPOUND
OF MOBILE HOMES AND "A" FRAMES THAT ARE RIGHT ON THE WATER. EACH
UNIT HAS ITS OWN PRIVATE DOCK THAT WILL ACCOMODATE UP TO A 30 FT
BOAT. THE BEST PART OF ALL IS THE COST. THE CABINS OR THE TRAILERS
ARE $50.00 PER NIGHT (NOT PER HEAD), AND WILL SLEEP UP TO 8 PEOPLE.
THERE IS A FULLY STOCKED TACKLE SHOP, ICE, SOFT DRINKS, AND A PAY
    PHONE ARE AVAILABLE.
THE RESIDENT CHARTER SERVICE IS "STRIKE AND BITE" CHARTERS. THEIR
FLEET CONSISTS OF TWO 30 FT. SPORTSFISHERMEN. THE BOATS ARE
EQUIPPED WITH ALL THE HIGH TECH ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT IMAGINABLE.
THEY FISH 8 RODS FROM 4 DOWNRIGGERS, AND ARE CAPABLE OF HANDLING
ALL THE NEEDS OF HANDICAPPED FISHERPERSONS. THE CAPTAINS, MARTY
AND ALEX, SEEM TO HAVE A KNACK FOR FINDING FISH WHEN NOBODY ELSE
CAN. THE 1989 PRICE FOR A 6 HOUR CHARTER FOR 4 PEOPLE IS $250.00.
THE PRICES FOR 1990 HAVE NOT BEEN SET YET.

A WORD TO THE WIZE ABOUT GOIN OUT ON YOUR OWN... LAKE ONTARIO IS
A BIG AND BEAUTIFUL BODY OF WATER, BUT SHE CAN BE WHIPPED UP TO
A NIGHTMARE IN NO TIME AT ALL. FOUR FOOT SWELLS MAY NOT SEEM BAD
TO A SEASONED SALT WATER BOATER, BUT WHEN THE SWELLS ARE FOUR FOOT
HIGH AND FOUR FEET APART, THEN YOUR IN FOR A ROUGH TIME. GET TO
KNOW THE WATER FIRST, AND DON'T EVEN THINK OF GOING OUT WITHOUT
    A VHF RADIO.

IF ANYONE WOULD LIKE MORE INFORMATION, OR PHONE NUMBERS, JUST DROP
    ME A LINE,(NO PUN INTENDED).
