I used to carp fish the Merrimack River in Haverhill, Mass.
as a kid. That river has carp so big they'll scare you. Ever see
a 5-6 foot long carp ? They exist (or did exist) in this river. My
best ever was 42 1/2" long. I have no idea on the weight. The best
fighting carp I ever got is permanently etched in my memory. It
was only 36" long but in took over 250 *yards* of line off my spool
before I turned it around. I got it all the way back and up to the
shore and my brother spooked it trying to land it. It then peeled
off another 150 yards of line before I turned it around again and
finally landed it. I think someone else had caught this fish before
as it was missing one of it's lips.
Considering we used 6-8 lb. test on medium to light fresh water
outfits, I'd say your not going to get anything much bigger without
    breaking a rod/reel/line.

| | I have accidently hooked into carp on the Charles river in Franklin
Mass. The largest was about 18 pounds. I caught them on worms.

If one was to intentionally go out fishing for these fish; what
type of gear would you use? Rod/reel? Line? Hooks? Bait?

Because of their soft mouths, I was thinking of treble (3) hooks.
maybe a first class bait casting rod? Bait? do you have any good
    bait ideas? Flour and water?

| | Re 4

Depending on what carp their are LEATHER COMMON,MIRROR,WILD or even HYBRID(mix
    between the common/mirror etc.

The best rod would be one which can with stand alot of punishment,
something with a strong tip but sensitive to mouthing.Mouthing is
when the fish picks up the bait and feels it, if they sense danger
    they will just drop it.

Reels present a reel problem if you can get hold of a rear drag
one your stuck, because the carp are tremendous fighters. It's got
to be in excellent working order and cleaned often. If you can get
hold of RYOBI reels your well in but if not SHAKESPEAR or DIAWA
    are the next best thing.

Line should be fine and strong with some give colours don't make
any difference. I don't know how you measure the stengths but about
10-15 pound line should be enough BUT it's got to be fine.

Bait is BIG business in the UK because the carp are fast learners
they'll leave a bait alone if they have been caught on it often.I
    would suggest SWEETCORN,LUNCHEON MEAT,MAGGOTS,AND BOILIES.
I'll do some more research on baits for you

Hooks should be single and quite big,British size CARP hooks 2-10
i don't know what size this is in the US.

I've got to go due to work I'll reply again.

I thought AMERICANS were civilised,If you did that here(in the UK)you
would be fined $500 for every fish killed.but if you've got an over
population problem some kind of kulling should be under taken but
not that cruely as bow and arrow.Maybe netting and the fish transfered
to anotherlake. But still we still do fox hunting with horse and
a pack of houndsand even badger hunting when they are a protected
    animal.

Carp fishing is pretty popular here on the Connecticut river. On
a typical afternoon I will pass a half dozen carpers along the shore
in any of my 3 favorite shore fishing sites. The carpers stand
    out from us bassers as they are the guys not holding their rods;
most use a Y shaped stick stuck in the dirt to hold the rod (one
draws the conclusion that carp fishing is rather slow). I have
talked to several and the favorite baits are cut corn straight from
the can, cooked carrots and doughballs that smelled strongly of
anise when they were shown to me. I have yet to see a carp landed
although I routinely see them cruising the shallows. They are
relatively unpreturbable; I have reeled spinnerbaits right under
their noses without so much as a sign of acknowledgement. I have
also heard they make quite the commotion while spawning but this
is second-hand, I haven't witnessed the ritual. I understand they
have orgies in shallow water ;-).

I have read about carp tourneys of the bow and arrow type in NY state
where to have a prayer of winning, you better beat 40 #. I have
seen a couple dead carp along the banks that probably exceeded 30.

Interesting topic. Anybody out there eaten carp?

Jewish people have something called gifilderfish (sp ?) that is
made from carp. I've seen it in supermarkets but I'm not sure what
else is in it (if anything) beside carp.

I used to fish for german carp in Spy pond and little spy pond
(arlington and Belmont) when i was a kid.
The best bait was a mixture of - ready for this-

peanut butter, honey, cotton balls (to hold it together), corn meal,
oatmeal, oil, and anything about to rot in the kitchen,
mash it all up good, if you can, let it sit overnight, not
refrigerated, (boy, my mom sure loved this!)

Using 20# line go and throw out a few lines, sit and wait, night
    seemed to be the best.

Ahhhhhhhhh fishing for GEFILTES, one of my favorite sports!

First, Steve wins the prize on spelling.

But both Steve and Rayj are right about the contents of gefilte
fish. USUALLY, store bought gefiltefish (Maneshewitz, Mothers, Rokeach,
etc.) is made of a combination of whitefish and pike, perhaps some
other freshwater fish. However, any Jewish Mother worth her (kosher)
salt would use fresh carp as a base. (As a kid I used to love to
watch the LIVE carp being delivered to the local fish store!)

    Mmmmmmmmmm who's got the horseradish?

Here's another good recipe for carp...
1 - Carp; 4-5lbs, skinned, remove head, fins and tail
1/2 tsp. garlic
1/2 tsp. salt
2 tbls. butter
1 tbls. crushed parsley leaves
1/2 onion
Place carp in a broiling pan. Baste both sides with butter, then sprinkle
with garlic, salt and parsley. Slice onion and place slices on top side.
Preheat oven to 500 degrees. Broil carp for 2 hours.
Then...while carp is cooking...
take the family out to Papa Gino's for a pan pizza!
When you return, remove the ashes from the oven and sprinkle generously over
the garden.

the British record was caught by Ian McDonald at 45lbs season 85/86

wouldn't except it.So there is a monster carp at Yately!!!

| | My dad lives in the Ozark mountains of Missouri and does in fact
catch and EAT carp. The catching is done mostly on trot lines using
worms. I have found one of the the best times to catch carp is
immediately following a good thunderstorm when the stream has been
churned up and is running fast and muddy. We have used bread balls
at this time with a lot of success.

Dad usually grinds up the carp into hamburgers and fries them in
a beer batter. Excellent eating, and he also pickles carp chunks.
I was just down there on vacation and he gave me a jar and directions
on how to pickle. I'm don't know about pickling the carp in this
area but I am going to try it with bass. If anyone would like to
try pickled fish send me mail at mjovax::owens and I'll send the
    directions.

I used to fish for carp in long island N.Y. what i used to do was
chum on the top with either whole pieces of bread"wonder bread because
it stays together better" or just pieces of the center. this would
usually bring them in. keep your eye on the bread because it usually
disappears without you seeing it. i would use a treble hook.[ use
good quality hooks cause if you don't they will staighten them out]
put a 1-2 inch end of the bread [edges] on 2 parts of the treble
with a bobber about 1-1 1/2 ft from it.place pole in a sand spike
and open your bail then wait for your bobber to disappear. then
set the hook but not to hard for it will rip his fat lips off.
sometimes i would use two treble hooks about a foot apart and if
one hook got out the other would keep him on.
do the same above for fishing the bottom. small weight 2 trebles.
either use the end of the bread [edges] or the white part depending
on how you will fish the bottom. the edges will float off the bottom
and the white part will stay on the bottom. moisten the white part
and roll it in a ball and chuck it out to were you last seen the
swell and wait. remember you should have something holding your
pole up and also keep that bail open if you walk away or are at
more than ten ft away. i have seen many a poles fly into the water.
you should check the laws on using trebles hooks for bait fishing
for it might be illegal in this state.

good luck and let me know what happens, i would like to get back
    into it someday.

Just one thing why use treble hooks? In the UK we use single hooks
of good quality, the size depends on how shy the carp are.

Carp on the Nashua/Merrimack point. If you are a city bum who
loves to fish for carp...then try this place. My boyfriend and
I go down after work and use oatmeal bait. We catch carp along
both rivers, especially near the Temple st. foot bridge. I don't
recommend eating your catch. We usually throw them back in for
future catching. You can catch other fish there as well.
