I don't know much about the 50/55 Tohatsu, but I have a 3.5 HP Tohatsu,
and it's one of the sweetest running motors I've ever seen.
It's also worth knowing that a large marina in Worcester is now
carrying only Tohatsu's, and having no complaints from dozens of
buyers. Another example of Far Eastern quality (and hopefully
reliability).

At the Worcester boat show last winter I was told (if you can believe the guy
selling Tohatsu's) the major outboard mfrs (i.e. Merc, OMC) motors below 5 hp
are actually made by Tohatsu and re-labled OEM style. That statement seems a
little far fetched, but......

I recently bought a used 3.5hp Tohatsu (long shaft model btw). I also heard
that it was the same as the Mercury. I found this out for sure when I saw
a Mercury and it did look EXACTLY like mine (except that the Tohatsu doesn't
have black paint).
The water output from the water pump is barely a trickle these days and it has
me concerned. I ran over alot of weeds in shallow water in Onset and I think
the intake got plugged up. This along with its use in salt water means that
I've got to take it apart, clean out the water paths and put it back together.
My question is:
Can anyone tell me where the Tohatsu dealers are so I can get my hands on a
repair/shop manual and have access to some parts (like gaskets)? Or, should I
look for any Mercury dealer and get what I need from them?
Suggestions welcome,
Bill C.
