| I could go for Keith's idea, another Hopkington (team) event...
and the 19th is good, it doesn't conflict with the ABC schedule...
However if we did go 8am-4pm, I'd suggest a noon weigh-in...
It'd be tough for the people without aerated livewells to keep the
fish alive for 8 hours... don't want to be weighing in too many
dead fish...
as a matter of fact, stopping for a weigh in at the middle of the
event, may prove to be rather hilarious, with the likes of the dynamic
duo wandering around piling up their excuses...

| I now a lot of guys at the Hudson Mass. plant that would love to
get in on this tourney but it has to be closer to Mass. like Bob
said. We could have one hell'va time! Maybe we could go to a place
that has a picnic area...We could have a barbeque and then start
fishing at 2:00 and end at 9:00 or 10:00. This would give me more
time to do some mud slinging!! We had such a good time Saturday
I could just imagine what laughs we would have if it was North
against South. I buy a Mass. License every year so I don't have
a problem with fishing in Mass. For those who don't have a licenses
for Mass..It will only cost you 7-10:00 for a three day one. I'll
be there no matter where it is held.
Joe let me know if I can help in anyway. I know of a few good spots
in Mass. that would be equal driving time for all!

| Thanks for the offer of help, John. I'll let you know.
I agree that a body of water closer to Mass. would make it more inviting and
certainly increase the chances of a BIG turnout. However, one body of water
that I personally didn't care for (and I know several others that agree) was
Monomonac. Granted, Monomonac allows Mass and NH fisherman to fish with
their own state license because it borders both states, but I didn't feel as
though it had any real potential.
So let's have some more suggestions of where...and when...and time of day.
I liked the Legend's idea of a cookout before we started...it would give us
plenty of time to get REAL fired up with a lot of name-calling and
mud-slinging...primarily aimed at Mr. DRAINO and ROTER-ROOTER himself!
(...here we go again!...no...wait....until we decide when and where....I'll
retract that last comment...)

I would like to try my luck at one of these tourney's (I am
a terrible bass fisherman- so no boasting from this end!!) but
I really don't want to travel to N.H. and register the boat an all
that either. There are many, many bass ponds/lakes in Mass. that
should fill the bill. I know of one that a 15 lber (the current
state record) and MANY 6-10 lb fish have been caught from.
Mass I believe also allows N.H registered boats on her waters without
having to get a special or temporary reg. So how bout it, get some
fresh blood at one of these tourneys and have it in MASS.!!

Steve,
Do you really believe Mass would accept a NH inland boat registration?
Mass accepts coast guard registration only, reguardless of state.
Mass will gladly register our boats for $$$ and won't even charge us
sales tax if we can PROVE we already paid it, or have had the boat
registered, for two years, in another state.

but there must be a few rivers - such as the merrimack. has anyone
ever gone bass'n in the merrimack around the tyngsboro/nashua line?

to be the popular belief that mass DID recognise nh boat registrations
- has anyone got the real skinny in black and white???????????

| That's me...
Why wait till Sept??? why not in August sometime?? And then again
in Sept. These have been fun since we started them a year ago, so
why not two more. If we wait till Sept. we might not be able to
get another one in. What say????
One other rule change......You must have a live well of some sort!!!
Seeing that 4 lb'er and several others all frozen up made me sick!!!!
That is not what we are about....at least most of us. No stringers
either....must be a live well of some sort, with aeration. A cooler
or whatever, but something that will keep them alive, and two check-
ins if we go over four hours is a good idea.
I do second the idea of getting closer to Mass or in it if possible.
I know that Joe is really running a N.H. tourney, and that Mass
fishermen (persons) are invited if they want to come. We ran the
Mass tourney last year and only Don Mac came on down for it, so
there seems to be more interest in Mass people going to N.H. to
fish. Based on the last turnout. But Joe, please.....closer. That
was one hell of a drive!!! If we are going to go that far, lets
go to Winie.....that way everyone can do what they want and we won't
have canoes being swamped in such close quarters.....Or some other
bigger lake that will afford some room (and has fish).

BassPro sell's setups that'll turn coolers into livewells for $20-30,
that's not a high price to pay for keeping the catch alive...
I bought one last year for the 1st Mass tourny, and I think Joe made
his out of an old bilge pump.

| I agree with you, Ron. Althought the last tourney was a "NH" event, it was
open to all. And we all certainly appreciated you guys driving that long
distance from Mass to join in the fun. I know that we wouldn't have had as
much fun without you guys joining in and I'd certainly like to make the next
one just as much fun!
As far as where to have it....that's why I opened it up for discussion. In
reality, there's only TWO places we could hold it without forcing people
from either state to invest in out-of-state fishing licenses or boat
registrations....that's either Monomonac or the Merrimack River. We all
know where we can launch on Monomonac....does anyone know where we can
launch on the Merrimack that has enough parking?
I wouldn't be opposed to holding it on Winnie, either. I've never fished
Winnie before and it still ends up being a long drive for you Mass folks.
As far as the livewell goes...I fully agree. I think it's important that we
make every attempt to keep these fish alive. I don't think it's asking too
much to carry a large cooler to store them in. You can pick up large
styrofoam coolers for under $10-15 and little battery operated airators for
under $10. Even a canoe has room for something like this in it.
OK....let's keep the discussion going. WHEN...WHERE...etc...

| Great idea to have another tournament.. this last one was my first...
I lost, but there is always the next time...
Had a great time though, haven't laughed that hard in ages.
About livewells and the such, how about a fish-basket... thats
what I used, I caught my only "keeper" the first 10 minutes of this
last tournament and he was fine still at 10:00 p.m. sent him back
alive and kicking?
A fish-basket is only about $10.00, they are a bit hard to come by
though... I went to about 6 places around here (Nashua) and finally
found one at Pete's on Lowel Rd. he had a bunch of 'em in two different
sizes... worked out ok for me.
Anyways, it was a blast, hope to see ya'll at the next one.

I just got off the phone with Mass. Fish and Game. They said
Mass. and N.H. don't have an agreement in place when it comes to
boat registration. N.H. is the only State they don't have one with.
So we would have to register the boats unless we register them up
here with the N.H. Coast Guard. They said it will cost us around
10.00. The only other way thing we could look at is if we get enough
of the Mass guys to show up maybe we could match up some teams....The
Mass. Registered boat with the owner and a N.H. fisherman for his

you come here...you buy license...we buy license...you don't recognize us...
we don't recognize you...you drive a long way...we drive...etc..etc...
Realizing that it would nice to hold a tourney where people from BOTH
states can convienently attend, AND despite the general opinion of
Monomonac, I think that Monomonac ends up being the most centrally located
lake for ALL of us. Either that or the Merrimack...and no one has indicated
that there is a good launch site.
Although I only fished Monomonac once during the spring tourney, I can't say
that I was impressed by it....maybe because I got skunked! AND...maybe I
didn't know the lake well enough. Does Monomonac have a decent bass population?
Otherwise, we'll end up beating this to death and NEVER make a decision!
Before we decide, if someone lives near the Merrimack in the Methuen/Haverhill
area, please check out the launch ramp & parking situation and let us know.
Thanx....

No one was more sick at the thought of the 3 dead fish than me. I
had previously released, unharmed, all bass for the past 2 years.
The dead fish were not the result of no livewell, but the
combination of:
o Warm temperatures
o Too many fish
o And very sorry to say - not running the aerator frequently
enough
I had no control over the first, the second was intentional and I
have ordered Bass Pro Shop's automatic timer for my aerator.

1) How can you say the last tourney was fun? The Back Deck WIZARD
was not there!
2) Let's settle this for the last time. At the time I wrote the
note blasting BB and his standings crap, He had one whole touney
under his belt that I wasn't able to attend. At that time I
was still ahead of him in THE STANDINGS. You remember- Check
the standings Knuckle head. OK, BB doesn't respond. Then BB
Puts in a note (several days later) that says " I checked the
standings and I am Ahead of you". That's after he fished another
tourney without me. At this time I must admit that BB after
having fished TWO tourneys that I didn't even enter is a few
ounces ahead of me IN THE STANDINGS. No excuses but it may
be of interest that I fished the night tourney with 103 degree
tempature and was later taken to the hospital and diagnosed
with pneumonia. I lost a week of work and missed the -HJ- tourney
along with the singletary tourney that allowed BB to EEEKE ahead.
Enough of this. young BB knows in his heart that he CAN'T
compete with TBDW.
3) I am in favor of a Late Aug, ealy Sept tourney.
4) MAgodamomanok is fine.
5) The river is fine.
6) How about a tourney in March at WEST POINT? (That's if BB's
father will let him take the family boat that far out of town)
7) A WEST POINT tourney will open it up to alot of folks up and
down the coast. Let's hear from you folks from maine to Fla.
That should even include ole COONASS ect.
Thanks for all the cards and letters, I am feeling better.

418.25 | Merrimack info | VICKI::DODIER | | Thu Jul 23 1987 09:01 | 29 |
| There is a launch in Haverhill at the Haverhill yacht club that
you may be able to use for a fee. There is no license required to
fish the Merrimack from the Haverhill rest area to the mouth. There
is also a launch at Red Slavits on the Haverhill/Groveland line
which may also be available for a fee.
There are some smallmouths in this area as I saw them caught on
shad darts while shad fishing this past year. I have never fished
the Merrimack this close to the mouth specifically for bass so I
don't know for sure how well it will produce, but at least the fishing
licence won't be a problem. If you don't get bass you may run into
some schoolie stripers. This would even make getting skunked (bass
wise) a lot of fun.
As far as the live well is concerned, unless the temps are
extremely warm I seldom ever have problems with a stringer. We did
lose one out of three but that is an exception rather than the rule.
For what it's worth all 3 were alive when we pulled up to the ramp.
The same can happen (as already noted) with a live well and to try
and use one in a canoe really handicaps you in some instances. My
battery (which wasn't at full charge for the tourny) barely got
us back to the ramp. If I had a cooler/aereator set-up I would have
either been paddling back to the ramp, had dead fish, or both. The
alternative to this is periodically refilling the cooler. This is
not only time consuming, (3 fish in 1 cooler on hot day = change
water every 10 minutes) but could also be dangerous in a canoe.
I had to do this once for a touney in Maine and will never do it
again. The end result out of 5 fish caught was 2 dead fish and 1 lost
(jumped out of styrofoam cooler).

About 3 weeks ago the Manchester newspaper (I think the Union) had

They are years away of having enough equipment to treat the amount
of sewage the city produces. They are currently dumping 3 million
gallons of raw sewage into the Merrimack a day. If you guys do
decide to fish the Merrimack, you may want to think twice before

TIME : 7 AM to 3 PM (open for discussion)
I doubt the marina will allow use to have a "cookout" at the launch,
however, we could take a 1 hour break at noon for a weigh-in and lunch.
Regardless of WHERE it ends up taking place, it's gonna be inconvenient for
SOMEONE. At least Monomonac doesn't require anyone to buy an out-of-state
license or cough up more $$$ to register their boat differently. Plus, the
lake is large enough for you guys with big boats to go faster and make
BIGGER WAKES...so take heed ROTO-ROOTER!
Hey Legend...don't go badmouthing my Cajun friend, Ole Coonas Bob or he'll
sick his pet, little Phideaux, on you!!! (BTW...if you haven't taken the
time to read ALL the real early notes and replies in this notesfile,
Phideaux is Coonass' pet 12' alligator!)
As far as an August event goes, I'll be on vaction so someone else will have
to sponsor/coordinate that one.
OK...now that the decision has been made and I've probably pissed off a few
potential attendees...let's start having some registrations!
Basic rules will be as in the last tourney, however, I'll re-post them
later. If we get as many (or hopefully, more) teams as at Hopkinton, I
think we can do a 50-30-20 payout. I propose upping the ante a little to...
say...$20/boat and $5/person for the Hawg pool. Anyone object??
One more thing...there's a $3 boat launch fee. To make things easy for all,
I'll collect it as well and pay the marina when we haul our boats out.

I totally diagree with the payoff scheme, half of the idiots that
make sixty thousand a year in this place still have the underwear
they wore in highschool! Digital has the types where you go out
to lunch and everyone gets a sandwich, and then you have the manager
that orders a filet and stiffs everyone else with the tab! The pool"One
boat takes all", if they want the money that bad have them dust
off there withdrawal slips and take a trip to the bank once in a
while!
Sad but true!
No charge for the LEGENDMOBILE at the launch!

| Hey, Bob...just because YOU didn't pay to launch and screwed the marina out
of their fees doesn't mean everyone else didn't pay. FAIR IS FAIR!!
If you can afford a Ranger...ya can afford $3 to launch it! Besides, with a
50-30-20 split, there's a good chance you can win some $ to pay the fee.
If the $3 is gonna break you, maybe we'll take up a collection. BUT...
if we don't come up with enough donations, it looks like you don't fish!!
(I doubt if RAYJ will donate though....{sorry..})
Maybe someone that lives close to the marina can stop in or call them to see
how they feel about portable grills for a BBQ at lunch time.
As far as the 50-30-20 payout goes, assuming we get 15 teams, this is what
the payout would be:
1st Place Team .... $150
2nd Place Team .... $ 90
3rd Place Team .... $ 60
Hawg Pool ......... $150
So even the third place team ends up doubling their money!
NOW...cut out all the BS and start registering.

Hey Legend,
the only "MAGIC" that day was that your "Legend-mobile" (Hyuk, ya'll hafta
see this thing to believe it), didn't sink??!!??
That was 'real' magic....
You know though, reckon I am sorta curious..... what the heck would you
have done if you would have been "lucky" enough to have caught a fish???
I don't think the Legend-mobile could have stayed afloat (talk about a "
Livewell").
About that "voice" you heard, after seeing you fish, I suspect it had to
have been your stomach growling (hey, steak with Fish Scent will do it to
ya), and you just interpreted it the way you wanted.
About my boat, you're correct, it is good for something :
It's good for.....
A.) Saving Legend-mobiles (still don't know how that thing kept afloat)
B.) Skunking Legends in their own time.
Have a nice day...

Where do you get off pissing on Coonass?
I find three quarters of your entries in this file offensive. Coonass may be
a little tougher to understand, but everything he says is done in a friendly,
joking manner, unlike you who can't enter a single sentence without putting
somebody else down.
Coonass (among others) in this conference adds a color and international flavor
which keeps this file from becoming just a bunch of fishermen swapping lies.
Unlike Ole Coonass, I haven't heard you open your house, boats, fish camp, honey
hole and expertise to any and all in this notes file. If I were Coonass, my
offer to take you fishing out in the bayou would still stand, I just wouldn't
offer to bring you back out again.

| Mr. Legend,
Some of us have not yet met you in person, and our impressions of you
have come solely from your notes/replies in this conference. There
is a tradition and protocol in these conferences that takes the
place of face-to-face conversation. Since I can't see your face
when you insult somebody, I don't know when you're tongue is firmly
planted in your cheek and when you're smiling and winking. I have
to assume, lacking a "wink" or "smiley face", that you are serious.
I am willing to believe that you ARE an OK guy, you're certainly
an interesting character, but you need to learn how to phrase things
so others are not offended when no offense is intended. The result,
otherwise, is that some of us will not see you as the fun-loving,
regular-guy and all around good sport that you might be. This is
not SOAPBOX, and I'd like to think that we're all friends here.
Mr. Moderator, perhaps you could point the Legend of the Storm Drains
( ;-) ) to the etiquette section in the notes documentation.

| I spoke with David Watts, who works in WAO and happens to live at
Monomonac Lake. He is a member of an association thar owns a
beach on the north end and has kindly consented to let us use
it for a cookout. It is not large enough for the cars and
trailers but has a lagoon and sandy beach we could pull the boats
up to. He even said they had a 55 gal drum with a grate for
cooking on. The only drawback is its aprox 4mi from the launch
which is a haul for the canoes.
I propose we could:
Fish 7AM to 11AM.
Have a cookout 11AM to 12:30PM
Fish 12:30 to 4:40

| Yeah...thanks, Keith. I know exactly where you mean as I fished that area
last time I was there. The only problem with the spot is, as Keith said, is
that it's at the far end of the lake. Canoes and the like would have a
tough time getting there, and IF we have a noon-time break for a weigh-in
and BBQ, it would have to MANDATORY for all. One possible solution would be
for a couple of the power boats to give the canoes a tow there and then let
them fish back towards the launch site after lunch. (I can see it now...
Bassin Bob giving the Legend a tow...at 70 MPH!!)
No matter WHAT we do...it will end up being an inconvenience for someone.
