415.0. ""Muddy Trout?"" by OTOO01::WARK () Fri Jul 17 1987 14:26

My uncle dug a couple of large ponds (450ft by 100ft by 30ft deep
and 50ft by 50ft by 20 ft) in northern Ontario. He stocked them
lsat year with Rainbows and Speckles. This year the fishing there
is great BUT the fish all taste "muddy". That's the only way to
describe the taste. The taste is quite strong. He has an aerator
in each pond to oxygenate the water. The only explanation I can
think of is the feed. He feeds them bulk fish food (there are some
chub in the ponds for the trout, but not too many) recommended by
the stockers. I know... ask the stockers...but they have no
explanation....and of course deny it is the food. Needless to say,
it is frustrating catching the fish and not enjoying the taste.

My other explanation is that they are too easy to catch so there
has to be a catch, right??

    Anybody got any ideas??

    Thanks, Bill (Frustrated Fisherman)

P.S. Fortunately, the pickerel (or walleye to some) are biting
at the lake nearby where my cottage is, and they taste great!

Did you catch these fish in the summer? I know some fish
(like Hornpout) are supposed to pick up a 'muddy' taste as
the water warms - maybe the same for trout?

There is a difference between hatchery fish and native/hold-over
fish. If your uncle feeds them pellets, then they are the same
has hatchery fish. Trout take on the pink color and good taste
after about 6 months of natural food.

I take it you've never eaten hatchery fish. The muddy taste
is the food and lack of exercise. Are these ponds starting to grow
any moss or grass? If so, throw in some fresh water shrimp and
    quit feedin' 'em garbage.

Thanks for all the advice, guys, much appreciated. I guess the
moral of the story is to get off my a__, hike and portage 20 miles
through the mosquito-infested bush of Algonquin Park in northern
Ontario, and catch a S___load of speckles, throw them in the freezer,
and repeat the process each time I run out!

    				Thanks, Bill

p.s. Due to a week of temperatures of > 32 degrees centigrade,
all the trout in the smaller pond snuffed it. We are in the process
of redrilling a new well to feed the pond.
p.p.s Do you know how much shrimp is up here?!?!
p.p.p.s If anyone needs tips on fishing in central Ontario (where
to go, confirming "good" fishing areas, just ask and I'll try to
find more out, or give some sage(?) advice.
