398.0. "Bass Boat Recommendations" by JUNIOR::WHITES (Are we having fun yet?) Thu Jul 02 1987 16:20

I'm in the process of shopping for a bass boat, and would welcome any
and all recommendations regarding the fiberglass bass boats available.
I've seen the Bass Tracker 1800, the Dixie 171, and the Kingfisher 17-
19'. The prices I've gotten range from mid $10k to about $17k for
boat, motor, trailer, and cover. I fish mostly in central Massachusetts
and I am not sure which one of these, with a 85 - 200 HP is the
way to go. I haven't been able to see or price out a comparable
Ranger or Dyna Trak/Ebb Tide. Is it worth pursuing, or are there
any other brands I might be able to see somewhere locally?

I have heard unofficially that BASS tournaments allow only up to
150 HP - is this a real restriction should I ever wish to participate?

Sunday paper listed a new & used boat auction in Worcester/Auburn
area this coming sat. at 11:00. Inspection is all this week if I
remember correctly. It is on rt. 20. The ad said water ready boats.
Perhaps it's worth a looksee. No boat qualifications were listed
other than water ready! Maybe someone else reading this paid closer
attention to the ad. If the paper is still around I'llcheck it again
    tonight.

    	Hi Jack,

A few people to see or talk to would be Ted C. in HLO and/or
Dave H. at IND. I recently purchased an aluminum rowboat
and motors, trailer etc... Want ads have many listed (not so
Many now due to the SEASON.. but many people upgrade early
    	spring.

There is also a dealer GRUMMAN in Shrewsbury that have some
nice ones. TED has a new fiberglass fishing boat so I would

    	recoimend him.

As for 150 restriction, any B.A.S.S. event including Federation
    events have a 150 restriction.

Thanks for all of the input on boats. I ended up buying
a Dyna-Trak 196 STE from Nipmuc Marine in Mendon. I
missed getting to the boat auction early enough to look
over the boats, but when we did find it, there were lots
of other people there! The boat I chose should be able to
do double duty in both fresh and salt water with the deep
V hull design. That was the deciding factor behind not
going with a conventional bass boat - Ranger, Cajun,
    Kingfisher, etc. Thanks again!
