378.0. "In search of a canoe..." by FDCV01::NICOLAZZO () Thu Jun 18 1987 11:04

Does anyone out there have any suggestions on where to
buy a decent fishing canoe in the Eastern Mass. area?
	(any suggestions on brands etc...)

I currently have a small (12') canoe but I need a larger one
in order to take my SO fishing with me.

All I'm really interested in is a stable, 16-17' fishing
	canoe.

Since the wind has died down, I haven't been able to use my
sailboard. I'm getting sick of sitting on shore waiting for
wind, so, it's time to get back into fishing! (Of course,
as soon as I get a canoe and put it in the water, the wind
	is gonna start howling! Oy.)

		Robert.

P.S. - I've read alot about Coleman canoes. Seem to be cheap and
stable - Are they a good canoe for fishing?

U-Haul in Nashua NH had a nice looking 16' conoe for $399. It was
a hand lay up woven glass.

I have the Coleman 15' canoe and I think it's a great canoe for
fishing. The only time it's not is trying to fish when the water
skiers and other big boats are out. The canoe is stable enough not
to tip, but it gets pushed around quite a bit. If you stick to
small ponds and lakes like I usually try to do, you shouldn't have
    a problem.

    I have a Coleman 17' canoe. It's great. I just bought Sigma 25lb
thrust electric motor to go fishing with. The canoe is stable and
is great for 2 people (plenty of room). I bought my 17' canoe
at Caldor's department store. There on sale frequently for about
    $275.

    Good luck...

Well, the price sure is right! Maybe I'll head to Caldor's
    	tonight and pick one up.

I just looked at a 15' Great Canadian (37.25" beam) - does that
sound like it would be a decent fishing canoe (for 2 people)?
    	price was $412.00

One guy I know who had the Great Canadian for fishing said
"it was excellent". They have padded seats, so the long hours of
sitting are more tolerable. The 37.25" beam puts it an inch and
quarter wider than my 15', so I would imagine it is slightly more
stable. But probably not by much. The price tag sounds a little on
the inexpensive side for a Great Canadian. Is it a used canoe?
I also have an electric trolling motor now for my canoe, a 20 pound
thrust Shakespeare. After paddling around the first year of owning
the canoe, I had to make the investment. Now I can fish and move
    at the same time.

Not bad at all (37 " beam). That's what mine is and it don't
get much more stable in a canoe than that. The price sounds decent
too. I'd say go for it.

If you're interested in the Coleman, check BJ's Wholesale Club
in Salem, N.H. I don't remember the price but it was good and there's
no sales tax. You need your DEC badge to get a membership card.
From Mass. take Rte 213 exit off of I93 go North on Rte28,
Take a right just before Burger King.

Thanks folks! I picked up the Great Canadian last night, took it
down to the Assabet, and caught my first 2 bass for this year.

Now I have something to do when the wind doesn't blow!

Bob,

You should be ashamed of yourself.

I understand you told Mike Goody the 12' canoe you sold him yesterday
(mentioned above) didn't leak. Let me tell you, we found one hell of a leak in
that boat last night. That hole was so big we didn't get 10' from shore before
the canoe was FULL of water. It ruined the whole fishing trip. Wallets wet,
tackle boxes wet, his brand new paddles floating away, ink running on our
licenses, his hat floated longer than the canoe did; all in four feet of
water. Did you ever pick up a six-pack in a soggy carton? Not a pretty sight.
Don't you love the feel of shoes that squish when you walk in them?

May I suggest in the future Bob, you should warn your buyers about the holes,
especially the one at the top, the one between the gunwales, that lets all the
water in when you capsize.

Take it easy on him, Al. I was warned that it wasn't too stable
with two people. We just had to prove it for ourselves.
As I usually don't go fishing by myself, I think I'll sell it.

Anyone looking for a 12' fiberglass (two seats, but should be used
for one person) drop me a line.
    $100.00 includes brand new paddles.

I'll stick to something with a flat bottom that we can stand in.

I won't speak for Mike, but in my own case you are being kind by

378.16Ever hear of this canoe?DSSDEV::PIEKOSTunnel of Love.Fri Sep 18 1987 16:4611
Anyone ever hear of a canoe made by (or called) "Peterborough" or
"Peterson" (Peter something... I can't remember).

None of the previous replies in this note or #309 mentioned this brand.
I have a chance to pick up a brand new one for $350 (14 foot I think) and
was wondering if anyone had any information about it.

Thanks,

John Piekos

John,

For information about canoes, you might try asking in the
SAGE::RIVERRAT notes file. These guys are into whitewater canoeing and canoe
camping. The discussion is full of canoe information, makes, models,
materials, relative quality and uses for.

		Good luck,
