375.0. "WESTERN MASS FISHING" by AKOV77::DORA () Tue Jun 16 1987 10:10

Does anyone know any good fishing spots in the Northwestern part
of Massachusetts? We have tried several places (Quabbin, Long
Pond, Lake Rohunta, Lake Dennison, etc.) and have never caught
anything large enough to keep. Also, what type of bait should I
    use?

What do you mean by northwestern Ma. ? I live in West Springfield
and I think of Williamstown but know that most people in eastern
Ma think of Worcester when you say Western Ma.

Except for Quabbin which i don't fish because of the h/p restrictions,
the best local fishing is in the Ct River. I also like Hampton
Ponds in Westfield and Congamond Lakes in Southwick. Otis Reservoir
and Big Pond in Otis are considered good and in the Berkshires,
Onota and Pontoosuc are outstanding. I don't know what you like
to fish for but with the exception of the Ct river, all hold cold
and warm water species and all are available to fishing boats with
more than 20 h/p (or less) as well as shorefisherpeople.

If your preferences differ, I could recommend some others. I will
mention that Onota which is over 400 acres had no more than 25 boats
on it sunday, including only 1 water skier. I wasn't fishing, but
I saw some good stringers at the launch ramp including rainbow trout,
pickerel, northern pike and yellow perch.

375.2NOT SO WESTERN MAAKOV77::DORATue Jun 16 1987 14:398
I live in the Gardner/Templeton area, so since I work in Acton it's
considered way out West according to everyone here!

Thanks for the suggestions, we'll have to give it a try.

As to what type of fish-----it's just about anything. This is the
first year I've fished seriously, so it's all still pretty new,
so any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have one suggestion....read this notes file. That's not meant
to be a smart reply either. This file is loaded with some great
info and discusses some lakes around you, along with many different
types of fish and fishing. Have fun and brouse thought here.......

375.4It's actually called North Central MassMORRIS::MLOEWELow_in_sugar Low_in_salt..LowenbrauTue Jun 16 1987 17:5115
There are quite a few lakes and ponds around that way. Just look
at any map and see for yourself. Most of them are also stocked
with trout. I live in Leominster and some of the ponds I go to
around there are Massapaug pond, Fort pond, Spectable pond and West
Waushaccum. Massapaug is mainly bass and pickeral. Fort, Spec
and Waushaccum are heavily stocked with trout. Most of fisherman
are out there for trout, so I like to go for bass since they're
under-fished. I havn't tried any lakes in Ashburnham. I hear there
there is some decent bass fishing out there. Now that I have my
electric trolling motor for canoe, I plan on doing a few more lakes
and ponds and perhaps exploring a little further from shore than
I usually go when I was paddling.
Hope this is a start for you,

If you're in the Gardner area there are a couple ponds in Hubbardston
you might try. There's Moosehorn which has Mass Fish & Wildlife access off
Rt. 68 and there's Morgan pond near Rietta Ranch off Rt 68. Both ponds have
produced some nice Bass and perch for me over the years. These two ponds are
strictly "car toppers". You also have access to Comet (Asnecomet) pond (limited
to 10hp) off Rt 62 in Hubbardston. Lake Monomonac is off Rt 202 just north of
the Winchendon/Ringe border that's only a few miles from you. Tully lake is in
Royalston. You are virtually surrounded by reasonably good fishing water.

Good luck and, as RR said in an earlier reply, there's lot's of info about
North central Ma in other topics throughout this conference.

How is the fishing at Tulley lake? Is it warm water species only?

Fishing at Tully lake in Royalston isn't that great, average
sized bass is around a pound and the larger ones only go about
3-4 pounds. Plenty of panfish, some trout (stocked in the brook
that feeds Tully) and some hornpout and pickerell.

RORR,The TEXICAN and I spent the day at Tully two years ago.
As it became apperant that we were not going to catch BASS, I
switched to A Very small Crank bait and could not stop cathing
Perch and Assorted Pan Fish. RR and TTC wouldn't see the light..
Still goin after Bass all day, They both gort skunked. TBDW
probably caught 120/125 pan fish during the day.
(just gettin ready for Friday night)

There were several folks fishing from shore goin after them cat
    fish.

A pretty place that Tully lake, But not a place I would go to fish
    for Bass.
