359.1MA to NH I knowLOGJAM::DUNNafter or beforeWed May 27 1987 09:5114

    	I've registered my boat in NH and I'm a MA resident so,
    	we had to get all our paperwork from MA together and then
    	venture up to a NH Registry of Motor Vehicles. It was
    	painless and didn't cost too much ($20 or so).

    	I suggest you try calling the Registry in one of the cities
    	of Maine (Portsmouth?).

    	Hope that helps,

    	Scot

359.3What a State of, well, state...MENSCH::SCHOLZRon....and thanks for all the fishWed May 27 1987 11:188
    To use a NH. registered boat in any of the other states you have
    to get it Coast Guard registered....you know , those little 3"
    letters and numbers. With that you can go to any state you want
    to, well, except two others. Alaska is one and I think that Maryland
    is the other, but that could be wrong. I believe, not being a NH.
    resident, that you can just send off to the Coast Guard for them.

    Good luck and tight lines, Ron
359.4This is so confusing...AIMHI::FLETCHEROK, now for summer!Wed May 27 1987 13:5116
    I just got my boat registered with the Coast Guard in Boston. They
    are very helpful and quick. The fee is $6-. I guess they must register
    most of the boats in the N.E States. They just gave me NH numbers.

    I am also very confused about the reg's as far as NH boats in other
    states. I'm planning to be on the Cape this summer (fresh and salt)
    and also hope to get back up to the Belgrade area in Maine. Some
    folks swear that the CG numbers are all(Ray...), then someone says-
    JEEZ,you were in Maine without a Maine plate? Boy,you were taking a
    chance...
    Same for Mass.
    I guess it all comes from NH being so damn ornery about not accepting
    other reg's (I think that's stupid) and everyone talks about
    "reciprocity" and how the other states get even with NH boats...
    Can anyone shed and light on this stuff?
    Who can I call in Mass?
359.5I meant RON!AIMHI::FLETCHEROK, now for summer!Wed May 27 1987 13:555
    Jeez, I meant RON in that last note...
    Ron, you seem to know all this good stuff. Where did you get all
    that good scoop?
    I mean there are guys in my area who argue this stuff for hours
    on end...
359.6burned by the tax manELWOOD::BERNARDWed May 27 1987 14:2617
    Just a little word of warning, I have boat registered in maine and
    it stays there year round. I bought it in N.H. (though I'm from
    Mass) and for the first year things were hunky-dory, it cost 9 bucks
    for a three year registration and I had to get an excise tax sticker
    from the Bridgton town hall ($21 for a 16 foot boat). The Maine
    registry sent me a notice that since there was no record of me ever
    paying a sales tax on the boat, they were charging me a "Use Tax"
    which came to the same amount (I think it was 5%), or they were
    going to cancel the registration. you can't win. To top it off,
    I have to pay property tax for a trailer that stays up there on
    Long Lake, and get this- it costs me $43 for a non-resident
    fishing license for the season. I know of some people who have
    N.H. registered boats in Maine. They run the risk of being ordered
    off the lake by the game wardens, and possibly even being fined.
    That'll ruin a nice vacation.

    i just called the maine dept. of inland fisheries in augusta.
    they told me the following : if you have a boat with coast guard
    numbers and a valid sticker it is ok to use that boat in maine for
    up to sixty days. after that you must proceed as in note.6.
    hopefully this helps

    I will be going to Maine for a weeks family vacation and fishing
    in mid July on Sebago Lake. I work in Merrimack and live in Nashue.
    The boat and trailer are NH registered.

    Having read this note and the related ones in 157.* can any of you
    help with:

    The phone number of the Coast Guard so I can register my boat for
    use in Maine.

    The address of same.

    What paper work, information etc do I need to register.

    Where do I get and how much is a 7 day Maine non-resident Fishing
    permit.

    Thanks,

    David.

    re .10>	If you are planning on using the boat on inland waters
    you need not contact the Coast Guard. You need to talk to someone
    from the Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife. The appropriate
    phone numbers follow.

359.13Canoes too?PASTA::SWEENEYWed Jun 22 1988 17:418
      Full season liscence in Maine $42 non resident + service fee...

    You can get it at Kittery trading post and probably at many other
    fishing stores in Maine.

    Does the registering of boats include canoes?

359.14Fishing license vs boat registrationMTBLUE::OKERHOLM_PAUThu Jun 23 1988 08:557
    re .13>
    Jay,
    	The fee you are referring to is for a fishing license. The previous
    question was concerning boat registration.
    	Canoes do not have to be registered unless they are powered by
    an outboard
    Paul
359.15great!PASTA::SWEENEYThu Jun 23 1988 09:4113
    Thanks Paul. I'm bringing a friends canoe up to Maine next week
    and she didn't know whether it needed to be registered or not.
            This makes things much easier since the canoe has only paddles
    no motor.

    As for the Fishing license someone in .12 or prior was talking about
    where to get the license and the cost. I should have specified fishing
    license.

    Thanks
    /Jay
