350.1 | white spinner bait! | HPSCAD::BPUISHYS | Bob Puishys | Tue May 19 1987 14:10 | 7 |
| If I could only have one lure it would be a white spiner bait.
I can jig it, buzz it, use as a count down bait etc..
Second would be a jig+pig, grub, worm
Then the rapala and crank baits!

Black and chrome!! Better for all types of water and depth
If I had to eat, I would vote for a rapala any day.

FROM SPRING TO EARLY SUMMER FOR THE SML. MOUTH, TRY A CREEK
CHUB "CHUGGER FOR THE SURFACE. THE ALTERNATIVE FOR THIS IS A
BRITE BLUE AND SILVER, 4.5", NON-JOINTED FLOATING REBEL. AFTER
CAST, WAIT 30 SECONDS AND TWITCH TWICE. REEL IN AND FAN CAST AREA.
LATER IN THE SEASON, TRY A SML. SILVER SPINNER W/ A WHITE TAIL
AND FISH IT W/ COUNTDOWN METHOD.
IF YOU ARE NOT THE PUREST IN THE LG. MOUTH AREA, ANYTHING, (IN
-CLUDING THE KITCHEN SINK W/ A HOOK ON IT) WILL TAKE THEM OFF OF
THE SPAWNING BEDS BUT IT IS ADVISIBLE TO CONSIDER RELEASING DUR
-ING THIS PERIOD. PURPLE OR BLACK PLASTIC WORMS, 6 TO 9" LONG &
USE AT DEPTHS TO 15'. AS THE WATER WARMS AND THE BASS GO DOWN,
SWITCH TO A BLACK & BROWN JIG W/ A BROWN 3.5" PIG. (JIG & PIG).
USE AT ANY DEPTH TO SUIT. MOVE ULTRA SLOW W/ OCCASIONAL TWITCH.
ENJOY.

| Think of it..
Naturalized lures (real looking) are like camouflage. Why would
we want to do this? Dont we want the fish to see it? I like the
rapala FAT-RAP ,paint the top white and paint the bottom black.
Thats right, just the opposit of the way we buy them. Contrast to
existing light, works well for me. The fish looks up (into the light)
it should see a dark lure belly better. Does this make sense? If
the fish looks down at the dark bottom of a lake or river, it will
be easer for it to see a light contrast. Get the picture? Almost
all of my top-watter AMMO is black this seems to work best for me.

LURE REASON
---- ------
Vibrax spinner Never had a fish hit that didn't
sizes 3-5 hook himself. The hook = 1/2 of the
lure. Good for lazy fisherpeople (me).
4" worm If Bass are around, they'll usually
go for a small worm. Attracts little
fish as well as small so it guarantees
action if there are fish around.

My favorite way to catch bass is on top, so my favorite lures to
catch them with are a black jitterbug and a frog hula-popper during
the summer when there are lots of pads. I don't mind saying that
I'm particularly fond of deer hair bass bugs used on a fly rod. You
really have your hands full hooking a 5+ lb'er this way! A lot of
rod bending and tail walking is the norm. Keeping control of the fish
and the line is quite a challenge!

350.15 | I like being on top... | AIMHI::TOMAS | Joe | Wed May 20 1987 14:56 | 17 |
| I have to agree with several others that top water presents the
most excitement for bassin'. Although I've used the "Spook", Rebels
and Rapalas, I have to say my all time favorite is Heddon's Crazy
Crawler. I've caught (and lost) more 5-6+ lb. bass on this plug
than anything else. There's nothing that can compare with a hawg
annihilating a top water, especially after dark. It really makes
the blood boil and adrenalin pump...definately not reccommended
for anyone with a heart condition!
Beyond that, I try not to play favorites...I try to select a lure
based upon prevailing conditions, although I must say the good ole
worm is high on my list under many conditions. And when worms don't
lure ole bucketmouth out, then spinner or crank baits may be the
number to use.

After using a worm, I like to go to crankbaits. One of my favorites
is called the "Thin Fin Shad" and its manufactured by Storm. This
is real effective in a blue or black top with a white bottom. The
only problem is that Storm is in Oklahoma and their stuff is hard
to find around here. Second choice is Rapala in metallic blue top.

2. 1/4 oz. " " " " - yellow " " "
3. 3/8 oz. Chartreuse/Black back "Little N"

Re: .23
Well, I don't fish for bass that often, but last summer a friend
and I both caught our limits in a half an hour. In about two
hours we had caught about 30 bass. The pond that we fished is
underfished and most of the fish were stunted. So there are
exceptional times to catch either granted. Especially if your
in a spot where a bunch of freshly stocked trout are waiting.
I contend that it is easier to catch bass throughout the entire
year under different circumstances with minimal experience and
knowledge than it is to catch trout. I contend it is easier to
catch a rather large bass within the record weight for the area
than it is to catch a large trout within the record weight for the
area.
Re: .30
Ah com'on, you don't really want to landlock , I mean write lock
me do you? I'm outnumbered and you bassers can take it. You're
a hardy breed aren't you? After all you may learn something, I
know I have.

| Howdy,
Re.26 I don't think Rapala makes a metalic blue back lure!!
Re.29 The "Super Rooster Tail" is one of the best all around
lures I have ever used.
As far as my favorite lures go: The Shad Rap, any color, any
size is as good a crankbait as you can get. Also if you like your
action on top, then a Tiny Torpedo is deadly. If the weeds are
real thick the best bait I know of is a genuine Moss Boss not a
substitute. And last but certainly not least is a bucktail jig.
I have caught more fish of all species on a jig than any other three
or four lure types combined.
Chow 4 now.
