345.1 | Those itty-bitties will soon be Mother-lunkers! | STOWMA::LANGE | | Wed May 13 1987 12:39 | 11 |
| Yo Bucketmouth...
If the pond is more or less unknown try to locate the land owner
of which the pond is on,then ask them if they would post it for a
year or two to ward of people who might abuse a good spot that you've
found. Not everyone is a catch,and release minded person,and before
you know it those 8,and 12 inchers will all be gone.
Just thik how big those 4+ fish will be when the itty-bitty one
grow to 4+!!!!
Just a thought.

One thought is that the smaller (more competative) fish are generally
out in the open and in shallower water this time of year. You may
want to try the deeper water and more structure. Generally the
8 to 12 inchers can't share the same habitat for fear of losing
their lives. To sum it up, you have to HUNT the big ones and they
aren't as apt to go as far for the bait. They are more selective,
that's why they are so big!
Another thought is, take Ranger Ron along, he apears to like those
8 inchers alot.

345.5 | Don't Post That "NO FISHING" sign... | KANE::MERCURIO | | Wed May 13 1987 15:51 | 12 |
| There's a school of thought that says that when you see the condition
such as the one you describe (too many small fish) the pond or lake
is in trouble. These great numbers of fish may be stunted, mature
bass. Due to a lack of fishing presure, the over abundance of fish,
and assuming a food supply that can't sustain the population, the
results are small fish that are very competative for the food.
The solution is to decrease to bass population, by what ever method
it takes....This is for the good of all, fish included.

345.6 | "fish-here" | MAMTS3::SUMMERS | | Wed May 13 1987 16:01 | 7 |
| Posting a "NO FISHING" sign, says to me "FISH HERE". This is how
I find these places. The big worm might be the ticket, I'll try
that tonight. But I can see the big fish on the top. Have you folks
used the BURK SNAKE-BAIT? Maybe a length of garden hose? or a small
rodent? How do you hook a rabbit? Guns are out of the question...

| I agree with Jim in .5, I think a little fishing pressure just may
do the trick. So, why don't ya post the directions to this hurt'n
honey hole and we'll all be there tonight to give all those little
buggers a run for their money! Will Ron and Bob be able to launch
those big ol' Rangers there???? 8^)

345.12 | WHATS A FLYROD ??? | MAMTS3::SUMMERS | | Fri May 15 1987 15:48 | 14 |
| Perry:
thanks for the idea, but I think I will stay with my spinning stuff
(DINNER WINCH). I have seen what happins to fly fishermen. There
nose turns up and they develop a "purist attitude" then they start
drinking imported beer or wine, shop only at FLY FISHING STORES
and buy designer fishin' vests. They soon forget how to spit & cuss
and perform other discusting bodily functions with the guys. Some
forget all about football, baseball and start doing things more
culturaly accetable like going to the ballet and wine tasting.
DONT LET THIS HAPPEN TO YOU !!!

|
345.16 | Let that be a warning to you!!! | AIMHI::FLETCHER | Wow, so this is spring! | Mon May 18 1987 11:33 | 24 |
| AND LET THAT BE A WARNING TO ALL YOU PURIST FLYFISHERS!!!
I MEAN, LOOK AT ME!
There I was, a purist. A quiet contemplative individual fly
fisherperson. I would get on my hip waders and my vest a walk a
stream for those little trout and I would love the solitude and
personal rewards I got from doing all that purist stuff like 6X
tippets and light hackle flies. And I sure would love to catch those
11 inch trout.
Then I met HOLESHOT JOE! Thrown to the wolves, I was, without a
chance.
My wife looked at me yesterday and said, you have a LCR? ANd what
is that big motor on the front of that boat you bought? And what
are those big ugly things in that box you take out...all those hooks
and stuff. Oh, where is my husband who used to be so low tech and
individual? You said you fished a derby yesterday with all those
metalflake boats that go like slingshots and sound like something
that the FAA should regulate. AND JEEZUS, YOU PUT BACK ALL THE FISH???
By the way I still have my light fly fishing stuff if you want to
try it on those itty bitty bass. I haven't yet, although I keep
saying I will...Somehow the little bass or fun but then there's
that sound as a hawg take your surface plug in the pitch darkness...
|
345.17 | Behold the Bass...they devour trout... | AIMHI::TOMAS | Joe | Mon May 18 1987 13:30 | 27 |
| And so another of my converts, a tried-and-true purist, has seen
the ways of TRUE fun and adventure!
Now...he stays out till all hours of the night and into the wee
hours of the morning....comes home (empty handed) smelling of bug
dope, cheap beer (Black Label or Portland Lager) and smelly hands!
No longer does he simply don a vest with a multitude of pockets
and waders and head out to his favorite little brook where he attempts
to catch hatchery-stocked 6" fish. NOW...he breaks out the weaponry...
SIX rods 'n reels, TWO tackle boxs loaded with squiggley rubber things,
plastic fish-like things with huge grappling hooks hanging underneath,
and all sorts of other do-dads that are supposed to entice the elusive
HAWG from their lair.
THEN...he piles all this gear into what should have been the FAMILY
pleasure boat, but now has been converted into the proverbial HAWG
HUNTING MACHINE...decked out with all sorts of gas and electric
motors, enough batteries to light the city of Boston, casting platforms
you can party on, and funny looking electronic gizmos with screens
that show lots of dots that tell you that you've just run aground.
Yeah...Chris is converted...and LOVIN' EVERY MINUTE OF IT!!
Anyone else out there need to be converted?

| Hmmmm, reckon I WON'T be trying fly-fishing ha ha. It was just an
idea to make hooking little fish a little more fun.
I hafta agree though... I mean some folks love fly-fishing, I have
never tried it so I can't really comment on it.
I can't wait to head on out tonight to try and nail a few lunkers at
my favorite pond. Hmmm... on second thought I can't wait for this
long weekend either.

345.21 | Flyfishing! I love it! | AIMHI::FLETCHER | OK, now for summer! | Tue May 26 1987 13:58 | 7 |

Muddler then a size 14 nymph ( Hares' Ear).
I caught a sucker.
|
345.22 | Is this guy confused ... or WHAT? | AIMHI::TOMAS | Joe | Tue May 26 1987 18:55 | 7 |
| yeah but....here's the REST OF THE STORY...
After having indoctrinating Chris to the REAL sport of bassin and
away from the "purist" attitude, he tied the damn muddler minnow
on a BASS SPINNING ROD 'N REEL SETUP!!!
|
345.23 | it ain't bassin', but it's fun!!!! | JOULE::SNOW | | Thu Sep 17 1987 14:18 | 13 |
| NOW WAIT JUST A MINUTE GUYS!!!!!!!!!!
Ok, after having finally muddled my way to this note, after only
finding this file three weeks ago, I gotta put my 2 cents worth
here. I was indoctrinated into flyfishing last summer, and while
I still catch a tree as often as I catch a fish, I love it. I haven't
caught any trout yet, but I did catch a 20" pickerel with it, and
boy was that a kick. Largest bass so far was some dumb 9"er that
got too curious on evening. But I plan on bring my fly rod to Monomonac
for the tourney.
