323.0. "2nd DEC BASS TOURNAMENT!!" by HPSCAD::BPUISHYS (Bob Puishys) Wed Apr 22 1987 13:44

Well it is getting time to get down to work. Is there anyone
who would like to run this next dec tournament? I will help. I
also have the rules and such ready to go. We should get a list
of who is going to fish so we can work out some entry fee for prizes.

There is a big problem with how many fish we can keep. The NH rules
said its MA. MA said its NH. The latest said that Monanmonic (sp)
does not full under the NH spawn rules. It is under MA. So lets
go with a team event and 10 fish/boat min 12" on MAY 17TH!!

So lets here some answers and volitares to help. Right DON! since
you will be fishing with ME!

Maybe, just to play safe, it might be a good idea to bring along
your sources for which state rules apply. Considering the confusion
over which state rules, if we end up abiding by the wrong rules,
perhaps a F&G warden might understand our dilemma should we get
checked. And...considering that we all plan to release our catch
(right??), I would think that there should be little trouble (I
    hope!).

    -Joe-(gone_to_DECUS_for_a_week...)

BTW...send mail to Chris Fletcher (AIMHI::FLETCHER) to remind him
to bring his baby scale for weigh-in (and DonMac's "baby" fish

I'll be glad to pitch in and do my bit.......what do you need??

I'll be there to help check people in and get things going...what
ever.....I think that Joe has the right idea, bring the paper that
points out the different owership conflict. I'll have a copy of
the map that saids N.H. has owership. Someone from NH should bring
the one that saids its MA.

Why don't you put in the rules Bob? And, lets start with a
registration. You might like to put out a flyer to all the people
that fished the last one. They may not be reading this file.

Okay, lets get to the fishing part......

I will have the rules in on Monday. I will also send out a mail
message to last years people if I still have the distribution list.
It was on a disk that did not get backup much and the disk went*(&(*).

I will list a place where to send mail to enter. Sounds good.

Well, what with all the neat new fishin' boats amongst us, let's
hope we have a good turnout. Joe and I argued about who would bring
the boat now that we both are proud owners...but he won 'cause his
deck is already done (and a mighty nice job at that-yep,surprised
me too,eh Joe?), so you'll see me sitting in the back of the bus
    from now on...
But then, since you guys want me to bring my PINK baby scale it really
does go better in Joe's boat.

I'll be making the tourny this time....hopefully. I'm in the
process of buying a boat from valley marina which is the ramp site
for monomonac and i'll be talking to these guys quite a bit over
the next week so if there's any questions you'd like me to ask them
let me know. I can check with them as to what they usually impose
for limits when they run a tourny as they run several during the
    year.

323.9Once again....VICKI::DODIERTue Apr 28 1987 09:5914
For the new fishing noters, it is not a good idea to consider
this as a tournament. As such, there is a permit required which
involves a permit fee. Only one permit may be issued per body of
water for the months of May and June (spawning period).

By the letter of the law, it states that this specifically applies
to all *commercial* tournaments. I don't know exactly what that
means or if it applies but I wouldn't want to find out the hard
    way.

    RAYJ

P.S. Maybe it could be considered a "fishing get together" with some
betting on the side rather than a "tournament".

just making a point. One that I hadn't thought about.

No offense was intended. You can call it whatever you want here
in this notes file. The point to be made was what you call it outside
of this notes file. If your friendly local game warden happened to
be around the day of the "tourny", and someone mentioned that was
what was going on, he may by law request to see the permit that
we don't intend to spend $25 (in NH) for.

323.13rules for second dec bass tournamentHPSCAD::BPUISHYSBob PuishysTue Apr 28 1987 13:2197
Welcome fisher people to 2nd Annual DEC BASS TOURNAMENT (get together)
It will be help on May 17, 1987 on lake Monomonac.
Start time wil be 7:00am. Please be there before 6:30 with boat in water.
It will be a team event. Atleast one dec person per team. We will launch
from Valley Marina in Ringe N.H.

The lake is OFF LIMITS TO ALL ON FRIDAY AND SATURDAY before.

To be an offical entry send mail to PUSHY::BASS or HPSCAD::PUSHY::BASS
please include your name and partners name.
For people with no access to mail send to mr01-1/m31 Bob Puishys.

The entry fee is: $10.00/team paid at ramp,
and a optional $5.00/boat lunker pool.
All entry money goes to payback: 40%-1st 30%-2nd 15%-3rd 10%-4th 5%-5th
Big fish gets lunker pool.

It will be an 8 hr. tournament. Starting time 7:00 (AM) and check
in at 3:00 (PM). You can check in when ever you want to if you wish
to leave early. (if there is nobody there to check you in, you will
have to wait.....the checkers are going to be fishing too) Be there
by about 6:00-6:30 (AM) for drawing and launching.

We in intervals of five seconds. Starting position
will be determined by draw and the last draw will be the "official"
starter. The intent here is give the smaller boats enough time to
clear the area before the next one goes off. Any kind of boat
is allowed, and you are responsible for your own safety. We won't
check for life vests, etc.. Insurance and such is the fishermans'
    responsibility.

All Non-powered boats do not draw. They will all start after all powered
boats leave. The NON-powered boats will be allow an extra 15 to come in.
They will weight in at 3:15 sharp. This is a friendly tournament so this
    15 min grace is granted.

THE RULES: as far as we see them now.

First Rule: Keep all the other rules simple. This is for fun not
    profit.

Second Rule: Remember First Rule at all times.

Okay, now that I got my attempt at humor out of the way, lets list
    some of the basic rules.

    NO TROLLING :^(

We will use standard mass fishing and boating rules.
Large or small mouth BASS only. The size requirement is 12in closed
mouth to closed tail. Meaning you can pinch the tail closed and
get about a 10th of an inch more.

There is a ten (10) fish limit.

This is a catch and release tournament.
We won't punish for dead fish, but all contestants must have some
form of live well. This can be a cooler which you change the water
in as needed, or any other form of "reasonable" container. The "intent"
here is to keep as many fish alive as possible, so we can "catch
and release." Dead fish can be taken home for dinner by those wishing
to. I suggest you all use some form of live-well enhancer..Catch
and Release is one brand name and only costs about the price of
a six-pack. Since it relaxes the fish, it also can turn a "short"
    into a keeper ;^)
You have to release all live fish.

This is not a "sponsored" event, by DEC or any other agency. We are
    on our own.

Nets are allowed and you can use any bait on a rod EXCEPT live bait.
No hand lines and such. Rod and Reel only.
No LIVE BAIT or PREPARED BAITS ie smelts or frogs.. PORK IS ALLOWED ie
pork rims or pork worms or strips.
NO MORE THAN ONE ROD AT A TIME/person

First boat on a position has the right of way. If the boat is moving
in a direction you can't jump in front of it, but may go in behind
it. Distance of control is an "estimated" 100 yds in front and 50
yds behind. The idea is to not crowd other boats, like we do all
the time when we fish regularly. Remember that there will be other
non-tourney fisherman out there, so watch who you yell at. If you
want to come in and talk to your friends in other boats, stand off
    and ask first. BE POLITE.....

	- If boat A is anchored and boat A has trolling motor up, and he
notifies to boat B that he is anchored, boat b must give a 50 foot
distance when passing or approaching boat A.

	- No one is allowed to leave there boats during the Tournament to
go up on shore or into the water after a fish. You may leave the water
if it is witnessed by another boat. No boat is allowed to get
within reaching distance of each other and passing objects between
boats is disallowed. (bring your own beer)

The ramp is controlled by the people at Valley marina. There's
also a charge for its use. Believe me, when they see whats happening
at "their" ramp they're not going to call it a get together. There
is also a possibilty that they will be running a tournament that
day which they *sponsor*. Has any checked with them?

I'll probably not be in this tourney, but still would hate to
see all the previous enthusiasm go under because of misunder-
standings by whoever is involved. Denny has a real point about
talking with the "ramp people" at the marina. How many people
(cars/trailers) are they willing to accomodate? What are their
hours? How understanding are they to this "get-together" on
their property? I haven't seen any communication addressing
this. A public launch is one thing, but this isn't.

If I'm out of line, just say so....Steve
323.18sorry bout that Ray....AKOV75::SHANAHANI'd rather be fishin'Tue Apr 28 1987 15:3921
Let me just make reference to some earlier comments and i think
i can straighten out what happened. In the early notes there seems
to be some confusion as to what the imposed limits are for lake
monomonac seeings how its in both mass and nh. All i was trying
to ask was if you folks wanted me to check with them to see whose
rules they go by at the marina when they have sponsored tournaments.
In other words....can we keep 5 fish at a time or do we have to
weigh in 2 at a time. I took offense to Rays next reply because
it appeared to me that he thought i was a new noter and that I didn't
know about tournament regulations. I'm well aware of both, but I
don't always come across that way. I apologize Ray for popping off...
you don't really have to go suck pond water....unless you fall off
your boat...;-) Bob is going to check with the marina to make sure
they're not running a tourny the same day we're going to have our
"get-together". I only offered because i've been talking to them
quite a bit lately anyway....and i just found out my boat may not
    be ready on time. :-(

Hope this clears things up a bit.....let's go fishin!

323.19Looking a little deeper....VICKI::DODIERWed Apr 29 1987 09:0527
    re:18
    	Apology accepted. No problem.

Looking further into the N.H. rules, it basically says that
the Director of fish and game of N.H. is supposed to get together
with his counterpart in Ma. and jointly decide the rules governing
interstate waters. The rules specifically are relative to seasons,
limits, minimum sizes, and method of fishing (i.e. no hand granades).
The clerk of any city/town boardering interstate waters is supposed
to have the determination made from the above meeting in writting
    and available apon request.
Although I don't have the above document, the N.H. fishing rules
state that 5 bass may be taken with no weight or size limit from
    the Ma./NH interstate waters.

As far as the rules are concerned, we probably won't have any
problems. I just wanted to let people know about them because Game
Wardens can do some pretty nasty things (like confiscate your boat,
your tackle, and your car) if you break some of the rules.

If I fish this tourny, I'll be fishing out of a canoe with an
electric motor. I don't like the idea of paying $5 to launch a canoe
(would rather put the $5 in the lunker pool). Could someone that has
been to Monomonac tell me if there's an alternative for canoe/cartopper
    launching?

As for the parking there is a dirt area up the street where you
park after a launch. Lots of room no problems. As for the time
of the ramp being open. don't worry, last time we just luanched
and payed them on the way out. they only charged us 2 bucks last
year because of the large group. just launch you canoe and don't
worry. they will not be counting boats.

Geez...I go away to Nashville for a week and it takes an hour to
go thru the notes... despite the 80-90 degree weather, I wasn't
able to wet a line (sigh!).

One question I have regarding the "get together"... if there's a
10 fish limit and we're releasing the fish, it's unlikely that many
of us will be ab;e to keep 10 fish (or less) alive for that long,
even in live wells. I'd suggest that we have a weigh-in around
noontime out on the water so that we can release the fish caught
in the morning. This should help guarantee that they remain alive.
I know the 50 qt. Coleman cooler Chris and I use won't handle ten
bass...especially when they'll all be over 3 lbs each!

Considerin' the "fun" you had with the trailer last year at Manchaug, we're
in for a real show up at Monomonac. I'll bring my camera. The ramp there is
less than great. The ramp is long, relatively steep and not straight.
Seemingly the best way to approach the ramp involves a 90 deg turn backing up.
The ramp is steep gravel except for the concrete pad at the water line. Ramp
fee is $3.00.

For those with canoes & car toppers you can put in from the parking area with
no difficulty.

What's goin on??!? Do you mean to tell me that we've only got 6-7
teams fishing this event? What a bunch of wimps...WHERE'S YOUR
    SPIRIT?? (no, Ron, not "spirits"...)

Geez...I'm really lookin forward to this one...

I want to see Gary do a repeat trailer show...

I want to see Ron try casting with a beer in each hand...

I want to see Rick Palmer's 10 year old son challenge Don_Mac headon...

I want to see Ray Dodier "suck pond water"...

I want to see Rick Palmer forget his insect repellant again for
    black flies...

I want to see if Don thinks I sling it better than Ron...

BTW...on the subject of the weigh-in. If everyone has a large enough
cooler or livewell, then a weigh-in at the end of the tourney is
ok. But, if there are going to be canoes participating, it will
be kind of tough for them to bring a large enough cooler to handle
up to 10 fish. For the safety of the bass, I still think a noon-time
weigh-in on the water is best. That way we can release fish caught
early, PLUS, it gives everyone an opportunity to tell his/her lies!
    It should be interesting...

    Hi y'all,

Erik Petersen and Eric Peterson are on and the same ( the first
is correct) so that's 9 boats.

Besides that how about posting directions for this place
so I can plan accordingly. I also might check it out this weekend!

    Thanks

323.37Still fer the weigh-in...AIMHI::TOMASJoeThu May 07 1987 17:4814
Those with canoes probably won't traveling a great distance and
will probably be within the same general area. Those with motors
will have no problem getting anywhere for a noontime weigh-in.
The location can be determined with the canoes in mind and the rest
of us will just be there.

If there's a lot of objection to this...then we can forget it.
My only though was to give the bass we catch a real fightin chance
to SURVIVE! I seriously doubt any canoe with two people in it,
tackle boxes, etc, will have much room for a cooler of any size
to accommodate fish...let alone our nourishments (if ya know what
    I mean...'course Ron does!)

323.41ABACUS::MACINTYREIn search of the Largemouth Bass...Fri May 08 1987 13:3912
I'd guess that RayJ is referring to the chain w/ clip type as a
good stringer. For keeping fish alive, I'd imagine they'd be better
than the straight cord stringer. But neither is really 'good',
especially while moving, they'd either be out of the water in the
boat, or slapping againts the side. And if you had something to
put them in while moving, you'd be better off leaving them in it.

However, maybe it is possible to keep fish on a stringer and then
release them successfully... I've never tried it... Does it
    work RayJ?

323.42Got carried away on this oneVICKI::DODIERFri May 08 1987 15:5838
Before I got sophisticated and got an electric trolling motor
for my canoe, I had no problems keeping a bass alive on a good
    stringer.

A "bad" stringer is as you said Don, one of the cheap cord types.
These cord types keep the fish in the middle from being able to
open their gills. The chain type keeps them seperated and actually
forces water past their gills when moving slowly.

I have never had a bass die on a good stringer. You do need
to either go real slow or put them in a cooler when moving fast. What
this allows you to do is not have to constantly change the water
in a cooler. Think about where the water for the cooler is coming
from if you don't think it would work, especially if you don't have
    an aereator of some kind.

I have had fish die in a cooler on me. This happened to me at a
tourny in Maine. They wouldn't allow the use of stringers. It realy
pissed me off. I was changing the water every 5-10 minutes after I had
3 fish. I got a total of 5 fish that day with 2 dead ones. I was lucky
to get 2 more as most of my time was spent changing the damn water.

When I weighed in the fish, the MC just HAD to make a comment on
the penalty for dead fish. I felt like telling him if he would have
let us use a *^&+ing stringer that I wouldn't have dead fish. Actually,
I felt like shoving my cooler up the MC's ass. I know, temper, temper.
I came in 21st place in a top 20 tourny.

How a fish does in a cooler depends on how warm the water is. The
warmer the water, the less oxygen it can hold and the less fish it
can support. Also if you get a big fish, it requires more oxygen
than a smaller one. The biggest fish will usually always be the first
    to die in a cooler.

    RAYJ

BTW - The NH state open allows the use of stringers.

The launch for Monomonac is right on rt. 202, at Valley Marina (in
    their backyard)

Coming from Mass, after you've entered NH, it's about 100ft on the
right. Parking is down the road, right towards the border, in a small
dirt lot on the side of the road.

323.48SYSENG::NELSONE unibus plurumMon May 11 1987 11:1610
If you take Rt.119 from Mass., you pass through Ashby center then through
a part of Ashburnham past Mt.Watatic. You then enter Rindge N.H. staying
on Rt.119. There's a major intersection with traffic lights where Rt. 202
crosses Rt. 119. Take the left there on Rt. 202 and the marina is a
little ways further on the left.

Steve

BTW- at that last intersection is a gas station, package store, and goodies
to eat.

323.50Monomonac stats for you techs.AIMHI::FLETCHERwhy are we here, anyway?Mon May 11 1987 13:0026
Valley Marina is in Winchendon right on Rte 202, and it is REAL
obvious. The launch is just fine for lighter boats but a bit more
of a chore for heavier ones. It's a concrete slab I think and your
trailer goes out nice and easy until you're in 16" of water then
it drops off the slab. Likewise, I saw a Checkmate and a Blazer
do a little slip slide to get over the slab, but no big deal (unless
    you have a 3000 lb boat 8-)).
As you might have guessed, I did happen to check Monomonac out Sunday
PM for a couple of hours. And just cause I'm such a great guy here
are a few stats for you technicians.

    H20 temp 54-58 degrees (surface)
H20 COLOR is brown (I think they call it cedar water)
    VISIBILITY about 2-3 feet.
weeds coming up but still 18" below surface.

No beds visible(but I didn't look too hard, and it was blowing like
    hell)
Monomonac tends to be windy out in the main part of the lake and
Sunday was no exception. The fingers were real nice and quiet.
A few cruising boats out- even some waterskiing!

The state has NOT put out buoys or markers for the rocks yet...there
are some rocks out in the main part of the lake so until you find them
go slowly out in the main part...I'll show you if ya want...

	*	*	*	*	*	*	*	*	*

We are launching at VALLEY MARINE on Rt 202 in Rindge ,N.H. The ramp is
about 200 yds north of the Winchendon Ma. border. To get there from the
South I suggest you make your way to Rt 140 N from Rt 2 in Gardner. Rt 140 N
ends at Rt 12 in Winchendon. Take Rt 12 W into Winchendon center (shouldn't
be much traffic at 5:30 am on a Sunday). Take a right onto the main drag in
Winchendon center and at the other end of the main street there will be signs
off to the right to Rindge and Rt 202. Taking that right will bring you to a
'T' in Winchendon Springs a couple miles up facing the RAY PLASTICS factory.
Take a left and VALLEY MARINE will be on your right about three miles north of
the 'T'.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For more adventurous souls, between the Rt 140/ Rt 12 intersection and
Winchendon center there is a right you can take to Winchendon Springs ( I don't
remember if the sign at the intersection says anything about Rt 202 or Rindge,
or Winchendon Springs). From Rt 12 to your right you will see a small bridge
over a pond and a cemetary across the way. Taking that right and crossing the
bridge will bring you into Winchendon Springs about three miles up (if in doubt
keep left) and RAY PLASTICS will be on your right at the aforementioned 'T'.
This route saves about 3 or 4 miles. Continuing straight about three miles
will bring you to VALLEY MARINE.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

At VALLEY MARINE, the ramp is 50 yds south of the show room down a gravel
embankment to the concrete pad at the lake edge. Parking is 100 yds south of
the ramp back in the bushes. Launch fee is $3.00.

HAY don rumor has it that Shawn Palmer, son of read only palmer caught the
fish and you lost a big side bet with him!!

Bassin Bob

Ok Rich were did you catch that fish?
323.72awfully quiet...isn't it?AIMHI::TOMASJoeMon May 18 1987 11:0910
Gee, Bob...Don's being UNUSUALLY quiet...not like him at all! What
did you do to him? Maybe the pressure of being skunked at two tourneys
two days in a row is too much for him.

Yeah...Shawn probably did catch the fish, but dad said " Son...if
ya know what's good for ya...and ya wanna fish on my boat again...then
    I caught the fish....right, Son?"

Bob, Since I'm sure Rick doesn't want to break his RO mystique...
He caught it 2 seconds before we caught up with him in that cove at
the end of the day, on a green worm.

Ya know, I've noticed how Bass'n Bob's typing has improved a great
deal over the winter. If ya take a look at some of his earlier
notes, the typing was pretty bad most of the time. Is there some
relation here? Bob's typing has improved, and he's lost his DEC
bass'n champ status. Maybe that would explaing Palmer's READ-ONLY
status, he probably types so bad he can't even START a note - and
    HE's now the champ...

    Jsut a ghought......

I was trying to get Rick to answer one!

Any way Rick is the 1987 MR BASS for dec. But we have not
had the individual state championships yet!!!

So can I still call myself the MASS DEC MR. BASS :^)!!!!

re.72 Joe, I hadn't seen your note when I enetered my previous
one, if I had I STILL wouldn't have commented.................

re.74 Sure, Bob, you can be Mr. Bass from Mass... But the REAL
champ lives up here. So, when you want to play with the big boys,
come on up north, you know where we are!

Has anyone checked with Shawn to see if "old read only" gave him
the fifty bucks? I noticed at the weigh in that old dad was pretty
    tight fisted with the money.

Ya, well congrats to the mystery guest........that was one nice
    fish!

Hey Joe, now that Gary has given up on trailer handling, are you
going to give lessons on how to launch boats properly??????;^)
    Just checking........Chris could help;^)

There's always next time...isn't that what losers always say?

    Tight lines everyone, Ranger Ron
323.78Oh heck,whats a little plug,anyway..AIMHI::FLETCHERWow, so this is spring!Mon May 18 1987 13:318
Thanks, Ron for reminding everyone about the launch. Jeez, Joe
reminded me to remind him that he needed to BE SURE to put that
little plug in before we launched. So, sure nuff, we got all excited
about getting our "Ranger" out onto the water and then there were
those funny bubbles coming up from way out back behind the car as
I drove the trailer, boat, Joe out to launch. Then a desperate scream...
"Cris, pull the boat OUT!" blub, blub.
All in all we had a great day...I needed to wash all my tackle anyway.

Geeez, how'd you guys manage to keep that quiet???

That's what I get for not showing up early, wish I would have seen
it Joe, you KNOW you'd have heard it!!

And, as self appointed manager and spokesman for RO, yes, Shawn
did get his half of the money - he also chipped in his half of the
entry fee! Palmer takes this stuff seriously... Oh, autograph
sessions will be at RO's office from 2-3pm today. You have to stop
by my office and drop off your $5 by 1:45.

Yea, that's it... When you gave me the $5 for Rick's autograph,
you must have taken it out of the tourny purse, rather than
    YOUR purse!8^)
323.82and the REAL TRUTH IS...AIMHI::TOMASJoeMon May 18 1987 17:4519
I really didn't want to say anything, but now I feel compelled to
do so. At one point late in the day when both Chris and I were
feeling a little disappointed from having an empty live well, we
came across two kids fishing from a canoe. Well, not that we're
proud of the fact, but we were getting desparate...we offered to
    buy any bass they had.

Unfortunately, they said, some guy with his young son in a bass
boat with NH plates had just paid them $5 for this huge fish one
of them had caught on shiners.

Just thought you'd all like to know...
