| I don't know what the record is but I have personally seen some
in the 3 lb. range pulled through the ice where I go ice fishing.
I myself have pulled in some 2+ lb'ers.

Note 732.0 Perch Hell at Hamblin! No replies
MIMIC::DOWNING 13 lines 23-MAY-1988 11:24
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tried Hamblin Pond in Barnstable this weekend. Caught one decent
rainbow (marshmallow/worm combo) and a zillion Yellow Perch! Tried
trolling on top, in the middle, and dragging the bottom. Also tried
baits and flies at various stratae. The results were the same: I
could barely get a first cast out without hitting a perch. MANY
dead ones in the water. In fact I had to give up using spinners
because they were literally hooking up every time I put one in the
water.
Is this population explosion of perch typical of Cape ponds at this
time of year (water surface
temp. is 63 deg at midday) or just Hamblin's ?

322.6 | Winterized perch angling | HSKAPL::AALTO | Erkki Aalto @FNO DTN 879-4863 | Mon Feb 05 1990 03:39 | 18 |
| After several weeks of frustration (=hardwater) I've decided to
try some perch angling. Now I need some good tips because I've
never done perch fishing in these conditions. Let me explain...
Winter has been exceptionally warm and there is one channel which
is icefree due the current flowing through it. It is partially
natural waterway, partially manmade for boating purposes. Those
couple of spots without ice are the narrowest with most current
ie. three to five feet per second. Depth is only six, perhaps eight
feet. Maximum casting distance needed is only about seventy feet.
This far no real problem. What is annoying me is that water is very
cold, 0 - +2 degrees of celsius only, and heavily coloured. Perch
in that place tends to be quite small, usually less than one pound.
What kind of tackle and bait should I use?
