| One of the nice things about the remote control electrics is that they turn
360 deg+. Bow mount or transom mount shouldn't make any difference...
go for it....

| I believe I saw this motor on display at K-mart (Leominster)
at least the Minn Kota I saw did have a built in maximizer.

| The minn Kota that you are referring to can be reversed if you desire.
They are real slick , I just helped a guy install one in a small
boat . I would reccomend that you really give a lot of consideration
to mounting it in the bow of your boat instead of the stern . You
would find that you would have much more control over the boat and
holding on structure etc. They are easy to install on any small
alum boat by just making a board and mounting it on the front .
Kittery trading Post has the motor on display at a price of about
290$ .

318.4 | Thanks | JUNIOR::WLODYKA | | Thu Apr 16 1987 09:54 | 19 |
| Thanks for the feed back I'll go check one of them out.
In reply to 318.3. The reason I wanted to mount in the
back are several.
1. When pulling into dock you don't have to try to
get up front to grab it and pull it up.
2. I believe the speed control is built into the base
and is not controlled by the remote. I'm not sure but
the picture looked that way.
3. I can easily make a mounting bracket for the transom
and perhaps mount both my gas and electirc there.
Those are some of my thoughts.

Dave, DON"T mount that electric on the back!!!!!!
Please trust me, I don't want to say we told you so.
You just have soooo much more control when that electric is mounted
on the front.

318.6 | put it up front where you can see it | HPSCAD::WHITMAN | Al Whitman -- always ready to fish | Thu Apr 16 1987 15:01 | 13 |
| Another reason for mounting the electric up front is being able to
quickly tell which direction your motor is going to pull/push you. With the
remote control MinnKota that I have there is a little white knob/arrow on the
top of the unit which points in the expected direction of travel. I use that
little indicator constantly. With the relatively slow rpm/thrust it's tough
to know which direction you're going to go until it's too late and you have to
over compensate in the other direction, if you can figure which is the other
direction. As Garry indicated, save yourself a lot of grief and mount up
where you have control and some vision, otherwise I'll bet you a fishin'
trip you'll be moving it after the first few expeditions.

| Well you guys sound like the voices of experience. I will take
this advice to heart. Al what model Minn Kota do you have. Is
it like the one I'm talking about? Is the speed contorl in
the remote or on the unit itself? I can't picture myself
scrambling up front to pull it out of the water when I'm right
on top of a stump or rock or adjusting speed. Trolling is
my main objective should this be given any consideration?

318.8 | It worked for us | CAD::BROPHY | | Thu Apr 16 1987 16:35 | 15 |
| Hi, If your main objective is trolling I would definatly mount
the motor in the rear! We were out last weekend trolling with my
buddies 14' Vhull starcraft and for S$%#s and Grins decided to try
out his 17lb Minn Kota instead of the Gas motor. It worked like
a charm and was easy to handle. Last Saturday was a beutiful
day so I think you would want a more powerfull motor for those windy
days which you will probably be out in sooner or later.
Mike
PS We just mounted the electric right beside the gas motor, and
tilted up the gas motor. We had plenty of room so there is no reason
why you'd need a special mounting bracket for this set up. The Electric
is the way to go for nice QUIET trolling!!

318.9 | there is a speed control | MTBLUE::VORHIS_AL | | Fri Apr 17 1987 10:01 | 13 |
| The 765 mx which is the electronic control has the speed control
built right into the pad in the form of a slide switch that you
can control with your foot or by hand if you desire . This particular
motor is made to be mounted on the bow . If trolling is your main
desire , get a 65mx and hang it on the stern , you can extend the
handle and have a nice rig to troll with . The use of a foot pedal
to control the on/off is easy to install and makes the stern mount
easier to use . The primary advantage that you get out of the bow
mount is the ability to hold on cover or work an area while casting
since most of your time trolling is spent just holding on to the
rod or watching it in a rod holder , the remote control is a waste
for trolling . If you are a bass fisherman and do a lot of casting
then the bow mount remote control is the only way to go .

| Thanks for the help Al I think I'm going to invest in one.
I do alot of bass fishing too so looks like I'll mount it
up front. Where did your buddy buy his? Any idea what he paid?
Is he in the Mass. area maybe I could get a look at it?

318.11 | it's on the foot pedal | HPSCAD::WHITMAN | Al Whitman -- always ready to fish | Fri Apr 17 1987 11:21 | 8 |
| Dave,
I have the MinnKota 565 with the remote via cables. the speed
control is a rotary switch on the foot pedal which is large enough
to be operated with your foot if your a little less clumsy than I
am.
Good luck,
Al
