Went up last weekend. We got 5 Saturday and 9 Sunday. Six keepers
from 15 to 20 inches. We fished out of Governers Island trolling
with streamers. We had some ice sat but was all gone by sunday.
We'll be going up again fri and sat.

| I went up to Alton Bay Sunday. We had a few strikes but didn't land
anything. We did see other people pulling salmon out. The majority
are being caught on live bait and some are being caught on flies,
the grey and black ghost.

| Anyone care to offer some tips on trolling for salmon. I'll be
heading up to Winni tomorrow to give it a shot, for the first time.

| Paul Kukonen out of Worster Mass. tied the flies for the couple
that placed 1 and 2 in the Winni Derby last year and also happenned
to tie the fly and taught the guy how to troll that won the previous
year. Consider the enormous odds. (If Paul is telling the truth
of course..)
Pauls fly... Tandem grey ghost; a double wire to secure the rear
hook, three transparent saddle hackles (as oposed to the opaque
ones) and real (not imitation) polar bear. It may look more like
a smelt than a smelt. That's the secret to their success. If you
have confidence in what you are doing one tends to do better.
As for technique, that's for someone else. I have no experience.

317.6 | Some tips that work for me | JETSAM::COREY | Anjin-san...Fly Me! | Fri Apr 17 1987 14:13 | 18 |
| I have good luck trolling with leadcore and about 20' of 6-8lb
test Stren leader and like a medium copper Mooselook wobbler.
Troll slow, but not so slow that they lure has no action. Leadcore
does not always give you enough weight to get the lure as deep as
you might like, so I add some split shot weight at the top of the
leader to get it down. I troll 2-3 colors in the spring and go
deep after mid-late June. Sometime in the spring (May) I just troll
with my spinning outfit with monofilament only, but I'll have to
add weight to the line, since the lure will come to the surface
when trolling.
Make wide sweeping turns to keep the line from slacking and getting
the lure hung up on the bottom. You see lots of guy take short
turns, their pole will bend and jump and they'll think "they got
a big one" on the line. All the got is the bottom! I've also had
good luck trolling with a medium size Phoebe.

317.7 | TRIP REPORT | VENOM::HOUTZ | | Sun Apr 19 1987 11:37 | 27 |
| Well, I finally made it out yesterday (4/18). By the time I arrived
at around 11:00 am everyone said that "I should have been there
earlier!" It seems that the Landlocks were on the surface and hitting
right after daybreak in the channel between Governor's Island and
the mainland. Most boats had fish. I trolled with two colors of
leadcore, and also with a flat line off my old flyrod using a #4
Gray Ghost on the flyrod and a tandem Red Ghost on the leadcore.
ABSOLUTLEY NO HITS until about 2:00 pm.
I left the Governor's Island bays and traveled the shoreline towards
Alton Bay. Just north of Elacoya Park about one mile I picked up
a small salmon on my surface rod. Continuing on, I had no hits
so turned around back towards the area where I picked up the first
fish. BINGO!... fish number two! I stayed in this small area about
100 yards off shore and managed to boat six fish all together...
all on my flyrod with the flat line. They ran 14-20 inches with
the largest keeping me busy for quite awhile.
I left the area and continued trolling all the way back to my put-in
point (about 4 miles) without another hit. The put-in is a small
area on the right hand side of the road just before you get to the
Governor's Island bridge. It's good for canoes and small trailered
boats (and no fees!). Let me know if you try the area, and how
is your luck.
