| I've got a 13' Merrimack also and love it! I fish southern NH trout
ponds and have found a few to be reasonabily good. Try Dublin lake
in Dublin, Spoonwood in Nelson, Nubanusitt in Nelson & if your a
flyfisherman you can try some of the Flyfishing only ponds around
the area. Refer to the NH laws paper. Good Luck!
P.S. If your out to any of these ponds and see a guy in a sky blue
Merrimack, that's propably me!

Pick up a N.H. Gazeteer (sp?) / Atlas they are $9.95 and are
well worh the investment! In it they list trout streams, cold water
ponds and warm water ponds, not o mention everything else you'd
want to do in N.H.
I used one so much that the pages were falling out, and had to buy
a new one!

308.3 | My favorite spot... | VENOM::HOUTZ | | Thu Apr 09 1987 17:05 | 16 |
| If you're willing to do a little driving I've found a pond in the
Waterville Valley area that can be great at times. It's called
"Upper Hall Pond" and is located just a few miles from Waterville
Valley (about 90 miles north of Merrimack). The state stocks the
pond by helicopter and it's flyfishing only. No motors allowed
(including electrics), but the pond is only about 50 acres. There
are usually a few hold-over brookies there (pretty deep water) and
the scenery is great. The nice thing is that on your way there
or back home you can always stop and wade the Mad river.
You can find the exact location in the New Hampshire Atlas referenced
by some of the others. If you see a 13-foot Allagash canoe there,
it's probably me. Say howdy!

re -2; That was a good list of trout ponds. This state stokes
few brookies! Some browns but mostly rainbows. The Swift river
catch and release area has some very good brookies but is fly fishing
only.

308.6 | Nothing like some big ole trout | WAHOO::LEVESQUE | Torpedo the dam, full speed astern | Tue May 02 1989 09:31 | 16 |
| I'm planning on heading up to a small pond in Sandwich Notch this weekend.
I can't remember the name of the pond, but it begins with a K.
My cousin has been the last few years, and they have gotten some really
big brookies there. The state stocks the pond by copter. Since the fishing is
so good, they have really good enforcement of game laws (even though it is
15 miles in the woods). They have wardens up there all the time.
Re: the 7 fish NH trout limit- is that a daily limit or a posession limit?
I want to take some fish home (and since trout are so small, you really need
two fish apiece). I don't want to break any game laws.
I'll fill you guys in on how well we did next monday (assuming the weather
cooperates this weekend).

Ever been? What can you tell me about the place?

I'm really getting psyched. I started tying flies again this week after
a layoff of about 8 years. I'll let you know how things work out at
Kiah.

I fished White Lake before. The fishing is pretty good up there. Or
maybe I should say it was (last time I was there was 10 yrs ago).

308.13 | trip report, as promised | WAHOO::LEVESQUE | Torpedo the dam, full speed astern | Mon May 08 1989 11:59 | 62 |
| ***************************Trip Report*********************************
Location: Kiah Pond, Sandwich, NH
Date: May 5th-7th
Weather: variety: Driving rain to calm sunshine to fog
Temp: 44-58 degrees
Water Tmp:45
Species caught: Brook trout
Total number: 12
Size: from 6" to 11"
Taste: Deeelicious :-)
We left on Friday afternoon and arrived at the site just after 6 pm.
It was already raining significantly. We pitched the tent, got some
firewood, and tossed a line in for about 20 minutes until dark. No
bites.
It rained like hell all night, and we got moderately wet. We hit the
water about 8 am (Nothing like a driving rain to keep you holed up).
I caught a couple in the rain on a 1/8 oz red jig head tipped with a
worm. My cousin picked one up on a spinner/worm combo.
The weather was so lousy, we thought very seriously about finishing the
fishing day and leaving about supper time. By about 1, the rain had
stopped. By 3, there were parts in the clouds. As the weather improved,
the fishing declined.
The tally for the first day was Ryan 0, Reggie 2 and the Doctah 5. The
fish were pretty small for the most part, so we only kept 4 (the two 11
inchers and 2 9 inchers).
We fished a little on Sunday morning. Ryan caught two and I caught 3.
The ones I caught were on a gold 2 bladed spinner/worm combo. The most
exciting part were the ones we missed! We could see them following my
lure right up to the boat.
The fishing was adequate, but not spectacular. Evidently the ice had
come out only a week before, and they hadn't stocked yet. All the fish
caught were hold overs. They had beautiful colors- purples and reds and
oranges. We let all the little ones go. The ones we cooked tasted
great.
A couple of general comments: the pond is very popular with the locals.
They keep very close tabs on when it's stocked, and undoubtedly fish
the place out within 3 weeks or so after stocking. There was alot more
local pressure than I expected. And some of these guys were rude-
walking through our campsite and setting up their rods in our site.
There is an abundance of wardens utterly lacking in humor. They are
real hard asses up there. Make sure you are properly licensed and
adhere to limits.
It was a good trip. I ended up with 8 fish. The others ended up with 2
each. My 11 inchers were the biggest we saw come out of the pond all
weekend. Last year, one of the guys got a 17+ incher- pretty good sized
for a brookie.
I wouldn't really recommend Kiah Pond. There are fish there, but you
really have to work for them. There is better fishing in more local
areas.

Real worm or plastic?

Sometimes "locals" seem to act like you pitched your tent on their
front lawn, for Pete's sake. Was there a lot of trash around the
pond too?
> I wouldn't really recommend Kiah Pond.
Doesn't sound like a lot of fun...

308.15 | at least we caught fish | WAHOO::LEVESQUE | Torpedo the dam, full speed astern | Mon May 08 1989 16:03 | 21 |
| Real worms were used. Instead of using a curly tailed grub on the jig
head, I just put a worm on it. It worked pretty well, considering how
lightly the fish were biting. I almost had to guess when to strike.
There was a little bit of trash around the pond. Not too bad. It was
mostly empty worm containers from lazy-assed fishermen.
The fishing wasn't really that bad. There were fish there- you just had
to work for 'em. The biggest reason I wouldn't recommend it is because
there are other spots where the fishing is equally good that are more
accessible. To me, the point of making the longer trip was to get away
from people and have a little privacy. It seems kinda crowded on a 6
acre lake with three or four boats and 8-10 people standing on shore.
Plus the locals have an attitude that it's THEIR pond, and who are WE
to be fishing there.
We made the best of it. It was better than staying home and I did
outfish my closest competitor 4 to 1. :-)

308.16 | TROUT FISHING JUST ARROUND THE CORNER | SALEM::PAINE | | Wed Jan 17 1990 11:58 | 10 |
| There are some good trout fishing ponds just 10-15 miles north of
manchester ie.:Mt.William Pond located off rte 114,Weare,NH,Ferrin
Pond off rte 77,Weare,NH (brown trout),and French Pond,Henneker,NH,
the pisquatagog river in Goffstown offers some good trout fishing
as well .
My personal favorite is Ferrin Pond however its access is no more
than primitive trail and you'll need 4-wheel drive or its about
1 1/2 mile hike needless to say it does not see much fishing
pressure.

Made a trip to Ferrin Pond in Weare, NH this past Saturday. Startled
some skinny dippers, that was fun :-)
As mentioned in previous replies it's 4WD territory from the main road,
or about a mile of uphill walking. The pond is heavily tree lined with
the exception of two places I could find...should have brought the
canoe, I'll know better next time.
Upon entering Ferrin Pond Rd there are state signs regarding open
fishing season and bait...etc. Right beside that sign is another...
...POSTED. After having driven for more than an hour, it suddenly
occured to me that I can't read English, so up I went. :-)
