304.0. "Trouble at the State House!!!" by TALLIS::RIEU (Celtics...BACK TO BACK) Wed Apr 01 1987 13:51
I was at a Leominster Sportsman's assoc. meeting last week and
we had a visitor. One of the state game wardens showed up to tell
us about a bill that is in committee at the State House.
It has to do with changing the make-up of the fisheries and wildlife
commission. The way the commission is set up now, Hunters, trappers
and fishermen are alotted a certain number of slots on the panel,
(I believe it was 5) What the sponsors of the bill would do is
reduce that number and replace them with other interest groups,
such as MSPCA and Friends of Animals.
The warden left us with a quote by Cleveland Amory , the head
of F of A. He has said, "the fishermen say that after we get done
with the hunters and trappers we will go after them, well, they
are right.
The warden also said that if these groups get control of the
commission trappinfg could be made illegal in most cases.
It may sound like the hunters and trappers are at risk the most
but the warden said that fishing will be effected as well.
She has talked to quite a few legislators and they are wondering
why they have not heard from more sportsmen on this issue.
so, if you Mass. residents want to keep a few friendly voices
on your side write to your state reps and senators and tell them
to oppose S1008. (It is a senate bill but both will vote on it)
Tell them to leave the Fish and Wildlife Commission as it is.
I sent my letters last week. If you want just buy a couple of postcards
and say simply, Vote NO on S1008, Keep the Fish and Wildlife Commission
as it is!
