| Thanks for the quick reply! That gives me more time to think of
excuses why I HAVE to go fishing rather then work on the house,
clean the yard or wash the car. I'll probably compromise and start
the gardening. I can hunt for worms that way! I hope to see a lot
of others out there enjoying the fishing this spring. There's nothing
like fresh fish for breakfast with eggs and homefries. It really
gets the day started off right.
ENJOY....

Has anyone out there tried Quabbin reservoir in central Mass for
some great land locked salmon fishing. I recently took a unbeliever
up there and to his amazement he landed a keeper within a couple
of hours.

A little over a month ago I was out with a buddy there and we must
have caught about twelve of them and lost twice as many. Several
times we each had one on at the same time. They were all over the
place. We had hits on the average of every 15 minutes. It was
really an exceptional day. Unfortunately, there were no keepers.
They all ran from 12-16 inches. It was great fun though with all
the action. I read later that something like 32,000 were stocked
earlier in the year there.
I went back out two weeks ago and nothing. Before we left, we
hit some of the edges and I managed to break the skunk with a 2lb.
smallmouth. The action should pick up again when the cooler
temperatures get here.

re .1 I should know this, what's the max horsepower boat you
can take on the Quabbin, I think its the same limit for all mass

and hang a small O/B off of it ?

Max H.P for Quabin Res is 25 horse but your boat has to be Rated to

boat must be rated for 50 horse. Have Fun...Mike

I just called MDC Quabbin. Minimum length is 12ft on the boat.
No canoes or Jon boats on the main resevoir. The motor is restricted to 1/2
the rating on the boat or 20hp which ever is less. That is if the tag on
your boat says max of 20 hp then you can only have a 10hp motor, if your boat
is rated for a 90hp engine then you are restricted to 20hp..
And that's straight from the horses(MDC) mouth....

I used to know someone who had a flat back canoe. He would
put it in Quabbin and they usually would come over and try
and stop him. But when they saw the back of the canoe they
said okay. He also had a motor on it too, whatever was required.
This was several years ago. Does anybody know if this is still
the case ?

p.s. He was able to go on the main part of the reservoir and
not be restricted to the smaller area where they make the canoers
go.

Do they restrict the NUMBER of boats allowed on Quabbin at any one

The only way to be turned down is if you want to rent and there
are no boats left to rent. or if they run out of parking they will
not let you park out on the main road. We have had to part on the
dirt road going in before at gate 8, but at 43 the road is too narrow
and that may be a problem.

My undersatanding is that the QUABBIN has a 20hp. max or half the
hp. that the boat is rated. ie. boat is rated for a 10 hp you can
use a 5 max..... the boat is rated for 175hp. you can use up to
20hp max. I just heard that the boat has be be a minimum of 12
feet. Is this true and if so do you think I can get away with a
11-6 CRAWDAD?

TBDW,
Your understanding of the rules at Quabbin is correct. Whether
or not they'll let you launch at Quabbin with an 11' 6" boat probably depends
on two things, 1: how close the MDC guy is paying attention, and 2: What kind
of mood he's in at the time.
If you're intending to get out onto the main lake (as opposed to
fooling around close to the ramp) you wouldn't catch me dead in a boat like
a Crawdad in that water. In a very short time period the Quabbin can change
from a mirror, to 2-3' chop. When the wind decides to come blasting down
that valley from the North all hell breaks loose out there. If you want
to fish for bass or trout in the Poddypaug (SP) Okay, or stay near the ramp
Okay, but the Crawdads I've seen are not seaworthy enough to sustain heavy
chop for the hour or two it will take you to get back to the ramp.

My neighbor and I were there yesterday. The water level looks to be down
about two feet since June (last time I was there). We launched at gate 31
and the water was below the concrete ramp. It looks to me to be down
about 15-16 feet, judging by the marks on the banks.
An aside...
We caught a lot of small mouth while trolling. The last one I caught was
about 9 inches and he swallowed the hook. After retrieving the hook we
released him, but it didn't look like he'd make it. A few minutes later a
bald eagle flew over, circled around about 100 yards from us, swooped
down and picked up the fish. He carried it off to a tree nearby, where we
watched him munch for about 10 minutes and then he flew off. It made my
day.

| Yesterday a friend a I went to the Quabbin as we have been doing
for the past few weeks. The water just keeps getting lower and
lower. I'd have to estimate it is down close to 20 feet. In all
my years of fishing there, even during severe douught conditions,
Ive never seen it this low. When I was leaving I talked to a
state employee and asked him what he thought about the low water.
He said the aquaduct is wide open, allowing something like 360
million gallons out a day. Since the Wachusett is also quite low,
I asked if it was bieng divirted in to the Nashua River in Clinton.
He said no, he thought it was bieng dumped into the Charles River
basin. He also mentioned something about certan people at a place
called Northfield Development (on the Connecticut River I believe)
have an interest in divirting water from the Connecticut into
Quabbin. If this is true, someone in the MDC is giving the order
to keep the aquaduct wide open, stealing the taxpayers water and
no telling waht else. If anyone else has heard anything like
this, it would be nice to share it here. This might be a good
one for the I team.
PS Took a nice 3 1/2 pound smallmouth
