248.0. "Spring fishing on the coast?" by FROST::CASAZZA () Mon Feb 09 1987 15:01

    Would any of you folks have any information on some spring saltwater
    fishing on the Mass. coast? My primary interest would be some flounder
    fishing or surf/jetty/pier fishing rather than the big party boat
    trips.

    Any ideas on places to go, where to rent boats, etc. would be much
    appreciated by a bunch of us up here in Vermont.

    			Thanks in advance,

    			   Joe Casazza

248.1some ideas....AIMHI::TOMASJoeMon Feb 09 1987 15:2120
    I used to go to the Salem Willows Pier years ago and fished from
    the pier for flounder and cod. They also used to rent row boats
    so you could row out into the Beverly/Salem harbor. The flounder
    fishing USED TO BE good, but considering all the polution that comes
    down the river, I'm sure things have slacked off considerably.
    I used to scuba dive the river and inside of an hour, would pick
    up 30-40 legal sized lobsters. Now, you run into the botton before
    you see it and your wetsuit has dissolved before the end of the
    dive!

    There are also a number of other places you can go like Gloucester,
    Rockport and Magnolia. There's several jettys in Rockport to fish
    from and LOTS of coastline. If I remember right, there's a bait
    shop in Gloucester called Al's that might be able to give you some
    more info. Perhaps someone else familiar with Gloucester can give
    you more info.

    Also...there's Plum Island. Lots of beaches to surfcast from.

248.2What about the left coast while we're at it?ARMORY::CUZZONESTue Feb 10 1987 07:017
    It looks like I'll be in Southern California for 4 days in late
    March. I was thinking about going a day early for some Pacific
    party boating if such a thing exists. Anybody got any information
    on party boats out of Long Beach or Newport Beach (or anyplace not
    too far from Anaheim/Orange County)?

    Al,

    I grew up and lived in the North Shore (Hamilton) for many years
    and I used to hit the party boats out of Gloucester and Rockport
    a lot. Back then (early-mid 60's), we used to leave the harbor
    and go out NO MORE than 3-5 miles (land still in sight) and fish
    till our arms dropped off!. The fish wells used to overflow and people
    had so many fish (cod, haddock, cusk, wolffish, pollack, and an
    occasional halibut) that they left a lot behind. The "pool" fish
    was usually a 50-70 pound cod with 30 pounders not uncommon. I
    used to come home with 50-60 pounds of FILLETS!

    Today...sigh...you travel 2-3 hours out to the banks, fish 100-300
    feet down, and if you're lucky, catch 3 or 4 fish. Your arms still
    drop off just hauling up the 1-2 pounds of weight to check your bait.
    The pool fish MIGHT be a 7-10 pounder with a rare 20+lb fish. Given
    the time it takes to get out there and back, you're left with only
    2-3 hours of actual fishing time, and usually less because if they're
    not hitting in one spot, it takes 10-15 minutes to drag anchor to move
    to another "hot-spot".

    Now don't get me wrong...I ENJOY FISHING!...any type of fishing.
    And I really don't care IF I catch fish, I simply enjoy being in
    the great outdoors feasting on the delights of Mother Nature
    (poetic, huh?). But things just aren't what they used to be.

    Anyways...I'm certainly up for a part boat excursion and would
    certainly enjoy getting together with you guys when you're ready.
    And I'm sure Chris "Bass_Bustin'" Fletcher would join us...and even
    perhaps DonMac (as long as he doesn't get sea-sick!).

    Later...

248.5Salem ain't what it used to beHPSCAD::WFIELDTue Feb 10 1987 13:247
    In years past I too would have recommended Salem Harbor for
    flounder fishing, but not now. The flounder fishing (or anything
    else for that matter) within Salem sound has fallen off badly in
    the past couple of years. There is still supposed to be good
    flounder fishing in the Quincy area and finding a rental boat
    for a day should not be a problem. However there is still the
    question of pollution in this area.
248.6Yankee go homeSPMFG1::CUZZONESWed Feb 11 1987 10:2110
    The Springfield crew will take its 3rd annual trip on the Yankee
    fleet this summer. We'll go later than last year to avoid the 30
    degrees and 5 foot seas of early May. Based on 2 years experience,
    the bigger fish were caught in June, anyway.

    Hey, that wasn't one of you Vermonters hanging over the barrel all
    day last year was it :^)? I don't recommend ocean fishing to anyone
    who experiences any level of motion discomfort.
