245.1lets try this againCAD::BROPHYFri Feb 06 1987 10:1625
I don't know what happened to my base note but I'll try again!

I've been ice fishing now for a couple of years and have yet to
catch a trout trough the ice, I mean come on I see all the pictures
of giant browns and lakers coming through those little holes! What
the *%!! am I doing wrong? I'v tried all of my regular hot spots
you know what I mean the places you run to in the spring right after
the fish and game truck leaves! I've tried Whites, Walden, Comet,
Peters, and still no trout! I've tried setting my shiners at all
different depths, deap wholes shallow water, salmon eggs, ect. ect.
ect. but still no trout and eggs for this cowboy!

    How about some hints PLEASE!

Do trout hit only at certain times of the day? I seem to be able
to catch bass , perch, and pickeral all day long!

I'm in Mass and will travel just about anywhere within the state
to get just 1 lowsy trout! ( don't really want to but an out of
    state lisence for ice fishing!)

    Any help would be appriciated.
    Thanks
    Mike

FIRST OF ALL,MASS AS A LOT OF NICE TROUT,BUT THE ONLY TROUT THAT
I HAVE CAUGHT DURING THE WINTER MONTHS ARE BROOKIES...RAINBOWS AND
BROWNS JUST DON'T LIKE MY HOOKS..OLDTIMERS HAVE TOLD ME THAT BROOKIES
ARE EASY TO CATCH IN THE MID MORNING AROUND 9am,USE VERY SMALL SHINERS
CALLED"PINHEADS"AND USE THEM ABOUT A FOOT OFF THE BOTTOM AND LAST
OF ALL,NO DEEPER THAN EIGHT FEET...
I LIKE USING A SMALL HOOK WITH A SHINER OFF THE SHORELINE IN ABOUT
3 TO 4 FEET OF WATER AROUND 7am TO NOON...I'VE CAUGHT MY SHARE,IN
THE SAME PLACES YOU'VE FISHED,WALDENS AND COMETS...FORT POND IS
A GOOD PLACE TOO...AT WALDENS I FISH ACROSS THE POND TO THE
LEFT,LOOKING FROM THE RAMP.. AT COMET POND I FISH ALL THE WAY ACROSS
THE POND CLOSE TO THE TOWN BEACH AND TO THE LEFT OF THE BEACH.
FORT POND I FISH IN FRONT OF THE RAMP OR IN FRONT OF THE YMCA CAMP.
    WELL,I HOPE I WAS A HELP..

Fisrt of all Arnie is right on. I have fished all of those ponds
with the exception of Walden and the methods he describes do work.
However there are a couple of other methods that work well for me
that you should know about. 1. Don't be afraid to use nightcrawlers
through the ice. I've had good luck laying them right on the bottom.
    2. I also do very well "jigging" with either a rapala, sweedish
pimple, or a rooster tail. I usually jig about a foot or two off
the bottom. When buying the rapala, be sure to ask for the one that
is made for ice fishing. It is totally different than what we're
all familiar with for open water fishing. Good luck!!

The last two notes have good ideas. If you use tilts the most
important thing to remeber is not to use big hooks with heavy leaders.
When I fish for trout I use 3' of mon about 10lb test. Use a small
gold hook. #6 seems to be ok. A very small split shot to get the
shiner down and you are allset. I have found on sundays when the
ice is thin the trout will run high near the ice. But most of the
time 1-2 feet off the bottom work fine.

As for jiging try a balck bucktail jig. A little red in it
is nice. Most people I know use all black real small with an egg
on it. I like a bigger 1/4 ounce with some red.

    Good luck

Bassin' Bob (don't tell anyone I tout fish!!!!! :^) )

Thanks for all of the hints and keep 'em comming. I was at Whites
pond on Sunday (got skunked again but I'm not given in to them!)
I saw one guy get three nice rainbows! he was using night crawlers
as was previously suggested. it turns out that this guy won a Mass
state award last winter for largest trout. He really planned ahead
he had his crawlers in his freezer since last fall! (my wifes gonna
    love this one!)

    Thanks again
and see you on the ice!

245.6Finally!!!!!CAD::BROPHYMon Feb 16 1987 10:0212
YEE HAAA I finally got my 1st trout through the ice. I was using
night crawlers, I rigged up my tilts with 5 feet of mono and tiny
#6 hooks. It was figid out this week end and I had to thaw out my
worms in a tin can on the fire but after a couple of hours I finally
got a flag! I ran up to the hole and the old spool was screaming.
I gave him a minute after it stopped moving and set the hook and
low and behold up through the ic came a nice 13 1/2 inch brown.
Thanks for all the hints I can relax now!

    See Ya on the ice.

The bait shop next to the Hudson MA fire station has both night
crawlers and garden worms, Also the Northboro Trading Post on RT
    20 Northboro has them.

I have done some trout fishing through the ice at Whites, had a
bit of luck using a small gold jig (Sw. pimple). You might try that
while waiting on your tilts with worms. I dont know what part of
the pond you fish, but I have had my best luck on the right bank
looking out from the boat ramp (just past that small cove).

    Good luck
