Ice-fishing on Moosehead Lake in mid-January was an awesome experience.
During the course of the day, the three of us, caught 18 fish -
all were salmon except for two togue. We kept our limit and with
great reluctance returned the rest (most of them). However it was
fun !
We fished near a spot called Moose Island. Anyone ever been there?
The natives were out in force (20+) in the same area. Some passers-by
were heading to whiskey island ?
The largest salmon caught in our area was a respectable 21 inches.
Anyone have any favorite fishing hole at Moosehead or elsewhere?
Keep you traps clean and hook sharp - they're out there!!
Cheers,
Mike

MAINE WARDENS WARN ICE FISHERMEN
MONSON, Maine - State game wardens, who issued nearly 50 summonses
and warnings in a weekend road check aimed at ice fishermen, warned
yesterday that traffic checks will continue for the next several
weeks throughout the state. Wardens on Sunday checked 270 vehicles
that they stopped along Maine Route 15, the main access to Moosehead
Lake, said Paul Fournier, a spokesman for the state Inland Fisheries
and Wildlife Department. Of an estimated 660 ice fishermen questioned
between noon and dusk Sunday, wardens reported 47 violations, most
of them for short fish and exceeding the bag limit.
