240.0. "First Day Out!" by TRACTR::DOWNS () Tue Jan 27 1987 08:25

    Well I finally got a chance to go out ice fishing this year. I went
    over to Nubanusit (sp??) lake in Nelson, to try my luck at catching
    a laker. Last Saturday, 1/24, was so cold and so windy that I was
    freezing while setting in the bob house with my coleman heater going
    full blast. I didn't even put any tip-ups out, I just sat in the
    house and jigged. The guy I was fishing with must of got his brain
    alittle frostbit because he kept trying to keep his two traps in
    working order all day. About every 5 minutes he had to go out and
    clear the snow out from around his traps because the wind was causing
    the snow to fill in the trap areas. Meanwhile I was jigging away,
    catching an occasional yellow perch now and then. Finally after
    about 3 hours of jigging I pulled in a small laker. It was alittle
    over 15 inches and would of been a keeper in previous years but
    recently the laws have been changed to having Lake trout needing
    to be at least 18". This fish did look fatter then the racey lakers
    that I had caught there in the past, so maybe the length limit of
    18" is helping, who knows? I've been fishing for lakers on this
    lake for over four years and although I caught my share of fish,
    I have yet got a keeper there. Although 4 years ago, while fishing
    with this same partner, I had a terrible need to relieve myself,
    so I asked Ken if he wanted to man my jig pole while I ventured
    into the adjacent forest. Apon returning, Ken had a landed a nice
    3+ lb. laker. Since that day, I have yet to leave my post again.
    Well back to last Saturday, during the rest of the day both Ken
    and I caught a bunch of perch and nothing else. We did get a visit
    from the local game warden who checked our licenses and asked how
    we were doing. I pointed to the 1/2 dozen perch frozen on the floor
    and told him that all we were catching were these here rainbow trout.
    He looked at us kind of funny and wish us better luck in the future.
    Well that's what happened on my first day out this ice season, what
    about you guys/girls, how did you do?? Anybody find any good lake
    trout spots? I'll settle for your 3rd or 4th best spot.

    Good Luck!
    Bill D.

240.1Nubanusit in Spring...SMURF::PETERBAKERWed Mar 18 1987 13:155
    Do you ever go to Nubanusit (or Spoonwood) in spring/summer?

    I tend to vacation there. Lots of bass in July/August, but have
    been zeroed for trout in spring. What's your luck?

240.2BASS in Nubanusit?AIMHI::FLETCHERWho's running this place, anyway?Thu Mar 26 1987 16:4714
    HEY, I've been to Nubanusit in the spring with a fly rod and I've
    had fun chasing (in my canoe) the schools of stocked fish( I think
    they're stocked) that I find feeding along the quiet shores in the
    evening. Small fish, big fun on a light tippet.
    I recently read that Nubanusit was suffering from the acid rain
    problem plaguing so many of our georgeous lakes. This could account
    for the slow fishing for salmon or lakers? I don't know how much
    fishing pressure is on the lake...

    BASS? did you say BASS in Nubanusit? I thought I saw one feeding
    in 20-30 feet one hot summers day but I just brushed it off to heat
    stroke. (The water is THAT clear- a beautiful lake)
    Where are they and what techniques do you use?
    Cris.
240.3About those bass...SMURF::PETERBAKERFri Mar 27 1987 17:2812
    Bass. Lots of them, large and small. If you stand facing the water
    at the Hancock town landing and look from 1 to 3 oclock, you have
    the
    area I've seen them. My kids catch the 1-2 pounders all the time,
    using worms. The big ones seem to sneer at fishermen.
    There are many trees down in the water there at 20-30 feet; and
    some rock.
    There is enough food in the lake still: I see schools of 3-400
    red perch going through there.

240.4A relaxing afternoon!AIMHI::TOMASJoeMon Mar 30 1987 09:3013
    Well...I made it out yesterday for the first time. It felt GREAT
    to get a line wet again. I went up to the Bow power plant on the
    Merrimack River and fished from shore. The sun was WARM...the air
    was WARM...but the fishing wasn't. I managed to catch just one
    smallie...about 2lbs. Apparently the power plant has shut down
    for a few weeks for PM and the water at the discharge has cooled
    off considerably. A bunch of kids were fishing shiners and were
    picking up a number of smaller bass...only 6-10".

    Oh well...it did the heart and mind good! Now, I have to hurry
    up and get the deck built on my boat and get that in the water.
