232.0. "Fishing in Oz ???" by KAFSV4::J_CAMPBELL () Thu Jan 15 1987 22:56

Does anyone have any information re: angling in Australia.

I'm gonna miss the spring Steelhead run here in Ontario this spring
'cause I'll be down-under. So I need to find out where's the best
places in Oz to get my line wet (fishing that is!).

I heard somewhere that they are importing Rainbows for sport-fishing
    down there, is this true?

    Come on you international anglers......

Trout are not native to Australia, but are stocked in various places.
Although I never tried myself when I lived there, my understanding
was that the best fishing in the country was in the Snowy Mountains.
A very large hydro-electric scheme was contstructed in the Snowies
in the post war years, forming many lakes filled with mountain snow
runoff. Trout were first stocked many years ago now, and have done
very well in the Southern hemisphere.

You can get to the Snowy Mountain Region by air or rail (as far
as Cooma, rent a car for the last hour) or drive (about 8-10 hours
from Sydney (probably 12-14 from Melbourne??)).

Accomidation should be easy, as this is also the largest ski area
in Australia during the winter. You'll be there mid-summer (if
you are not already there). As it is mid-summer don't forget the
Areo-guard (sp?), because the bush flies will carry you away otherwise.

New Zealand also has excellent trout fishing I am told, if you can
see your way to stop over in either direction.

    Good Luck,
