I'll lead off with a bit o offhand general commentary on the "fishing shows"
Ive seen on cable....just to save you wear on the remote..:^).
"Bassmasters" (NASH): True Tournament competition, a bit to much talking
and not enuf fishing buts its interesting to see Roland
win! Good if "wheel of fortune" is not on.
"Fishing with Roland Martin" (WTBS/TEMPO): Fun and interesting...Roland
doesnt just haul em in in but also tells how any why he
fishes where he does with what he does. Roland is the best
"personality" of the bunch. Roland also fishes for things
other than Bass...which adds some variety to his show. One of
the better ones.
"Bill Dance Outdoors" (WTBS/Others): Bill also gives the hows and whys of
his fishing as well, uses modern equipment but has the personality
of...well..of a ...well a catfish???...Carp???
"Billy Westmoreland": Havent seen this guy yet.
"Fishing with Virgil Ward" (Everywhere): Set default ==Bill Dance with
more talking and less fishing. Lots of old footage with
antiquated equipment, some pretty lousy footage included.
Watch Roland instead.
"Salt water journal with Mark Solsin"(PBS): Good stuff for anyone, especially
salt freaks, this guy goes from sticking charley tuna to blues to
bones on the flats....my personal favorite even tho I dont fish
salt. Technically excellent.
"Fish Hole with Jerry McKinnis" (ESPN): Good show with lots of variety,
warmwater, coldwater, salt...Good Ol Jerry fishes em all. Lots
of info to be gleaned if you listen to Jerries guides. Good
fishing footage everyweek. A bit too much scenery and singing
but its a hour long so 10 minutes of junk is tolerable. Jerry
does have one fault and that is the way he handles all his
fish like their dead even when he plans to return them. Most
forgettable scene of Jerry with his hand stuffed in the gills
of a 8 lb Steelhead while he bluthered on about the value of
catch and release to protect the resource. The guide had this
most odd look on his face as well, and tryed to handle the rest
of the fish landed himself!!!!
There is one other, which features footage from the early sixties and
being fimed in 16 MM it is really bad....is on ESPN at 6:30 sometimes..
Dan Rather is more interesting.
Hey..that sums up my opinion of TV fishing....some good, some bad, some
ugly.
76 and counting!!
Ed
"Country Sportsman" (NASH): Sing a song, catch a fish, sing a song,
tell a joke, we're good ol boys, end of show..dont bother witgh
this one..watch "wheel of fortune" instead.
"In Fisherman" (WTBS/TEMPO): Excellent, primary oriented to the midwest
as is the Magazine, but lots of variety and good tips for all. Good
photography as well.
"Rod and Reel" (PBS): Very good for those who fish downriggers and cannon
balls and engage in heavy trolling. Much discussion of methods
used but not a whole lot of why they are used.
"Rod and Reel Streamside" (PBS): Good honest fishing with someone who
apparently didnt know a hoot and is willing to learn. Oriented
to stream and river fishing in particular. Lots of action and
enthusiastic "OHWOW"'ing.

230.2 | Don't Forget Orlando...... | TORA::SCHOLZ | Ron....and thanks for all the fish | Wed Jan 14 1987 14:21 | 43 |
| Ed's review is pretty much on the mark as I see it. I watch most
of the shows dealing with fishing, but concentrate on the fresh
water ones by Roland, Bill, B.A.S.S., and one that Ed didn't mention,
Fishing with Orlando Wilson. My opinion of this one is pretty high.
He varies his fishing, but most of it is for bass, as is Bill and
Roland, and he spends a good portion of the show talking about the
lures and how to use them and most important, when to use them.
He talks struture and current and time of the year, along with the
weather. Good show that doesn't repeat the same thing over and over.
One big plus with Orlando is he fishes the Northeast at least twice
a year. So we can some data on our backyard and not see Roland pulling
in all those huge Fla. bass, making me wish I had never left.
As an aside, did any of you catch last weeks show where he was fishing
a Fla. farm pond (with special permission you and I couldn't get
if we tryed) and hooked a HUGE bass. He actually stopped fishing
right there and then and took off to weigh the monster, estimated
by him to be over 13 lbs and the biggest fish he had ever caught
on his T.V. show in 15 years. Sort of a neat way to end his show.
Back to the T.V. shows. B.A.S.S. has the real potential to be good.
They have their expert giving pointers on some lure or struture
or other technique every week. I do wish they would show a little
more of the pros doing it, rather than all the weigh-ins and
meaningless interviews they do. I mean, the guy never really says
a thing worthwhile for fear (I think) that someone may over hear
him, and get an advantage. But that not withstanding, it is the
best show to get a look at the pros and see them do their thing.
Now I like Jerry and expecially what he is doing with an hour show.
It would be nice if more of the shows could get this kind of air
time. His "Special Olympics" last year was really great. Seeing
him and all his friends taking those special people fishing was
really neat. I thing that he is credit to the fishing community
and people in general. Good fishing tips and he covers the country.
Oh well, enough.

230.3 | HERE'S MORE ON CATV | CANDY::MERCURIO | | Wed Jan 14 1987 15:07 | 39 |
| To add my two cents to this...
"Jimmmy Houston's Outdoors" (my personal favorite, with Roland
Martin running a close second) - (NASH, TEMPO): Lot's of bass'n
and a smattering of other "species" (as an example he fished
for "peacock bass" in some river down in Columbia South Amer.last
night)
He has an interesting sense of humor which tends to bring a smile
to your face during this time of year's snow storms.
Jimmy Houston's filming has to be the best on the tube. It's not
unusual to see footage of fish actually hitting a spinner bait or a
Zara Spook, this can be darn exciting sitting in your living room
imagining your at the other end of the line setting the hook.
He also gives names and address's of travel agencies or hotels he
stays at if your so inclined to take a serious fishing trip.
"Billy Westmoreland's Fishing Diary" (NASH, TEMPO) :Billy is a little
different from the others. He does mostly (as his theme song states)
smallmouth bass fishing, and alot of this is done in his home state
of Tenn., Dale Hollow Lake. This show is not one of my favorites but,
overall, not bad.
He did fish the BIG lake in N.H. this past weekend with Barry Hunt.
I could really relate to that (I'll have to speak to Barry about
this, I think I should have been invited as a guide!!!)
"Fishing With Orlando Wilson" (NASH) : Supposedly a professional
bass fisherman who fishes the circuit.(Personnally I think he should
keep his entry fee money and invest it in a retirement program like
a tax deductible IRA...) Not only can he not fish, but when he catches
a 2 or 3 pounder he invaribly says they are a 6 to 10 pound "lunker".
That's it for now...Let's hear from the rest of you, there's more!!
Ice fishing is boring...

If so, impressions?

| Geez, ED, I hate to disagree with ya, but the sight of all those
Rangers on BASSmasters does abit more for me than Wheel of fortune.
But then again Vanna White? is a whole heck of alot better looking
than Ray Scott! I agree with both your guys on the too much talking
and weighing. But they should get back to the basics soon, after
they've covered all the last major tournies. I wish they'd run this
show for the whole year instead of 26 weeks.
I'd go along with Wheel of Fortune over Country Sports(?)man.
On Fish'n Hole's opening show a couple of weeks ago, Jerry apologised
for his handling of fish, he's been getting alot of flack about it
obviously.
When is "In Fisherman and Virgil Ward on? Don't think I've seen those...
Also, anybody want to reccomend some bass'n videos? I have about 7 of
them. Big Mouth is good documentary on the Largemouth, not much
fishing though. Another one I liked was Doug Hannon's Catching Big Bass.

230.7 | Shows on WTBS | HPSCAD::WFIELD | | Wed Jan 14 1987 17:08 | 19 |
| Sat. night at 4:35 on WTBS they show 3 half hour long shows
back to back. first is Saltwater something or other with
Flip something or other, he always seems to flats fishing
and has a lackey to pole his skip around and tell him how
great the fishing is. I don't like this one all that well.
Next is Roland Martin. This guy does lots of different stuff
and is pretty interesting to watch. I particularly like that
when he has a guide he lets the guide talk and does not
proceed to tell the guide all about that particular type
of fishing. He usually asks questions and lets the guy same
something intellegent. Old Flip whats his face on the previos
show could learn something from that.
Then theres Orland Wilsons fishin show. Hes relativly entertaining.
I havent seen fishin hole for a while, but I kind of enjoyed
that one too.

Saltwater Journal is on ESPN, not PBS Times as in previous note.
Virgil is on whenever they need a "sport" filler. Check listing.
TEMPO doesnt print their schedule here either, just caught it by

| No no no......Roland wasn't on Orlandos' show. Roland caught the big
one. Orlando was fishing the Catskill River off the Hudson with The guy
(name excapes me) who won the Bass Masters Classic last year. They did
alright too.
Now Roland did *very* alright with that bass he caught. He was fishing
with a buddy of his I have never seen before. He was paralized from the
waste down due to a hunting accident, Roland said. Matter of fact, this
guy really flopped off the chair onto the deck to help land the monster
for Roland. You could hear him jump off, or slide off, or whatever he
did.
So you see Ed, I didn't have them confused......maybe you do;^)

| Observations on the previous 13:
- Mark Sosin should get a new hat. I know it's practical but it
belongs on one of Jerrys special kids (not meaning to be cruel).
- Jerry is unquestionably fun to watch and a credit to the sport
(fish handling skills excepted). I DO like the music, you don't
have to talk fishing while you fish all the time and I prefer
the music to the inane chatter otherwise offered on other shows.
Jerry needs to shake that Arkansas accent though. My wife can't
watch 2 minutes of this show without rolling her eyes and
snickering... major laughter erupts everytime he goes fishing
in the state of Warshington.
- Bill Saiff (Rod & Reel) has a habit of knocking his cameraman
constantly ( anyone named Wink deserves constant critcism ) and
is extremely short tempered with his inexperienced, no-name guests
(particularly children). No fishing buddy, he! I think I'd
be tempted to knock him overboard.
- I don't flyfish but I really enjoyed "Flyfishing for Bass" with
Dave Whitlock. He made me want to try it.
- DonMac, watch out for any Gaddabout Gaddis tapes! Hooboy, bad
news...old film, old equipment, old gadabout...peppered with
numerous bigotted remarks. I can't believe this stuff aired
on national TV 2 decades ago!
- Anybody seen Good Fishin' with Babe Winkleman? I can't quite
pull in 19 from Adams Ma. but it's on sat afternoon. Might be
a real change of pace. His wife's much cuter than Jerrys.

| Did anyone catch the Orlando Wilson show this weekend? If you did
I'm sure you would have been as impressed as I was with the way he
handled one of the sea trout he had caught. He had trouble trying
to grab it to take the hook out. The camera went away from him 3
times hoping he would get the hook out but each time it came back,
there was old butterfingers Orlando still trying to get this poor
12" fish under control. Holding the line with one hand and, (I might
add), many times unsuccessfully, trying to get the other hand around
the #*&#%& fish. I was impressed as usual with his techniques...

in action. All I get is Rod & Reel on shaky UHF.
Of course, Bill Saiff does give one enough material to criticize
for quite a while.
Given that Saiff (and the ever popular Wink) are my only viewees:
Do all the TV anglers fish with the click on constantly?????
Does everyone put fish in the live well to kill them?????
Will anyone fishing with Saiff get credit they deserve????
Can any fishing spot compare with his home port????
Will he see the wake from my torpedo?????
Gee, I can hardly wait... my PBS station is going to broadcast Rod

sorry... had to get him off my chest.

230.24 | The Week that Was.... | TORA::SCHOLZ | Ron....and thanks for all the fish | Mon Feb 02 1987 14:02 | 39 |
| Anybody catch Jerry's show this weekend. He was fishing up in Maine,
(that is part of New England, isn't it?;^) in the fall and was doing
alright. Doverfox.....something or other. I cant' remember the name.
Excellent footage and great scenery shots. His handling techniques
have inproved too, on fish that is. Oh ya. I really liked the song
they had on fall. Quite well done I thought.
Was wondering if anyone that saw it could verify that thing are
as nice there, fishing wise, as the show portrayed?
Another good one was Roland fishing Wisconsin. Bass all over the
place and no other bass fishermen around. I fished the same lakes
that they did, about 30 years ago, and things haven't changed that
I could see. Northerns and Walleye and Muskie were and still are
the main fishing in that part of the woods. Alot like trout is in
these parts. Leaves alot of bass untouched for the likes of me.....
I'm going to have to get back there again somewhere along the way.
I think it was Tom Mann that was fishing Wini this week. Sure made
it look nice. The guy that he was with was the Lorance rep in N.E.
and he was killing them. Seemed to be catching 4 for everyone that
Tom caught.
Orlando was fishing a Fla. farm pond with Joe Nikreo (the knuckleball
pitcher) and Joe had THE lure that was killing them and Orlando
didn't have one like it in his box. It was fun to watch Orlando
getting blanked while the "guest" was cleaning them up. Made for
an interesting show you don't usually get. "Star gets Hammered."
Jimmy Houstin, I can't even remember........now that is bad. The
B.A.S.S. show was from Minnisota and they spent 10 mins on how to
manage a lake for bass and how its' done there. Actually, quite
interesting. They were even flipping, which is not exactly a northern
type technique, at least a prominent one.
That's about all that I can remember about this weeks fishing shows.
Just enough to make the "cabin fever" rise about 2 degrees.

| That's " Dover-Foxcroft" and having been there, I can verify that
it's nice up there. Not having seen the show, I'd guess he was
probably fishing the Piscataquis river which has some nice scenery
along it, and you don't have to go to far away from town to get
into the boonies real quick.
In my opinion, fall is the absolute best time of year for Maine
scenery, even before the leaves turn. But I'd say the fishing is
better in the spring (May).

| Well, did anyone catch this weekends offerings? Mixed bag I thought.
Orlando was the one fishing Wini this week. Seems like they have
all hit it this season (or last as the case may be). Roland was
doing some nice smallmouth fishing on Lake Ontario, and Jerry was
catfishing in Minn. on the Red River. Oh ya, Jerry did his pitch
for his special fishing oylipics. 501-372-6544 is the number to
call for his catalog for the products that he has to offer to support
this. Really a great cause and a great thing for him to do.
Tom Mann was fishing Lake Martin in Ala. with his old boss from
the days when he was a conservation officer. They caught a lot of
small white bass and showed how the stocking program is being done
in the state.
Bassmasters had the "Big O" tourney on this weekend. Some real nice
fish were caught, but again they showed a lot of boats racing around
and weigh-ins and the like. The pro-pointer was on shinner fishing.
Nothing really new there. Find it out the first time you ask at
the bait shop.
Well, that's it for now. Tight lines, Ron

| I caught Jimmy Houston and for the fourth week in a row, part of
the show was devoted to Orinoco Peacock Bass; this time he was going
for a line record (8 lb I think). It looked like he did it, and
then beat it before he even got to weigh the first fish. I was
disappointed the way the show ended without telling you the weights
of the fish and whether he set a record or not.
I love the disclaimer USA network runs before Jimmys show identifying
it as a paid promotional program (read: 30 minute ad). Apparently
sales from Jimmys Cookson, OK tackle shop enterprise of the airwaves
pay for the program.
BTW, is anyone interested in taking up a collection to put a hit
on the guy that does the magicbait commercials? Where did they
get this guy? WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.
I caught Tom Mann also and called Fishin Shack right afterwards
to add $20 worth of Roadrunner jigs to my current order. It looks
like an effective bait for small bass on light tackle, not to mention
Crappie and other panfish.
Watching Tom was a hard choice, because USA has added Babe to its
saturday morning schedule. I switched back and forth for a while
before settling on T Mann. At least Tom has the decency to not
constantly plug (no pun intended) his own products like Jimmy.
I was not as impressed with Babes wife now that I've seen more than
her face and listened to her grovel and coo over him. He'll have
to offer something other than the std bass fishing to get me to
watch his show regularly since so many others do it better. A show
on Walleye (supposedly his specialty) or Pike would have me riveted
to the screen.

for bass. Orlando' show was the better one. He spent quite a bit
of time explaining what and why he was doing things.
Anyone else catch Billy Westmoreland fishing Squam Lake for smallmouth?
He has the worst of the shows when it comes to sharing info. Just
a lot of fish catching.
Bassmasters was good for anyone that is thinking of becoming a pro.
I actually liked it, and since they were on West Point, I liked
it even more. I plan to be there come the end of March:^))))))))
Jerry was off in Mexico fishing for bone fish and (I can't think
of it right now). Not one of his better shows I thought.

Jack, was that on Rod & Reel: Streamside??? I usually watch that
one on Sunday am, but I was a good boy yesterday and went to church,
and set the VCR for 10PM, rather than 10AM 8^( so I missed it...
Anyways... Right now the only shows that I know of being aired right
now are: Rod and Reel, Rod & Reel:Streamside, Fish'n Hole and Bill
Dance...
Anyone know of any others that are on right now???

and its just you and me on a pond in NY. Im gonna teach you about
using worms...." etc. Or something like that. Guess who is goona
watch this flick every nite this week. (My partner, thats who..)
It also reminded me of my trip two weeks ago to Sunapee with the
Skoal Bandit. Although we were doing only spinners, I wish I was
better at worming..

| Jack, some of those video's that are out are quite good also, some
tackle shops have a wide assortment of bass'n videos... they do
a real good job of giving you a real bad case of fishing fever come
Feb/Mar...
I fugured that was R&R:S, last week he was fishing small ponds in
the Adirondacks (sp?) and ended the show saying that he had hoped
to spend more time explaining how to fish worms (plastic naturally)
On another note, I sure hope that BASSmasters comes out with more
episodes this year, last year it didn't seem that they aired much
new stuff at all - and 95% was weigh-ins...
Hope Roland starts up again too, he's the one I enjoy the most...

| All right all you TV fanatics, I need some help. I was just
informed by one of my Reps. that my boys were on one of the Fishing
Hole Fishing Buddies segments in March. If anyone out there has
a copy of the show with the Pictures of Mark and Jamie Hunter, would
you PLEASE contact me. I would love to have a copy. Otherwise,
I will have to keep recording the show all summer. (Must have missed
it when someone recorded over my fishing tape or ????)

| Has anyone out there seen "Canadian Sportfishing" on cable??
Henry and Italo, the stars(?), are two of the lowest-key guys who
have ever gone fishing in front of a camera.
This series always has great scenery, as they mostly fish at fly-in
locations.
Overall it's a decent show, but for some reason I'm reminded of
a certain sketch from Saturday Night Live.......EH.

| Also....
There is a show that I just found part of on ESPN.
I just manage to catch the last 20 minutes of this show on Mondays
when I get home from work. Not sure of the name, and I don't get
good listings for cable stations. It seems to be SALTWATER orientated,
as the couple of (partial) shows I saw were on California Party
Boat fishing for albacore, and marlin fishing.
What I have seen of this show is unique in that there isn't a lot
of talking to the camera...rather, most of the audio is the actual
jabbering on deck. Best line: one of the mates on the albacore trip
encouraging anglers to follow their fish along the rail: "NO ANGLES..
NO TANGLES".

Did anyone catch the fishin show from Australia over the weekend?
I onnly saw a few minutes of it but is was great....
This "Dendee" type charactor knew his stuff and was obviously sponsered
by Shimano.
At one point he hooked a crocadile (400 pounder) and fought the
dam thing on 16# test line. It was COOL!

| Back in .41, I asked for any assistance in finding a copy of
the Jerry McKinnis Fishing Hole Show with my son's picture on it.
Luckily for me, I caught it during the re-runs last week. He was
the one who caught the Northern Pike while sleeping in the boat.
So, now all you non-TV celebrities may refer to me as Mr. or Sir.

BTW: weather here today is in the upper 60s or lower 70s and
no wind. I wish I was fishing!

| Re .41 (TV cleb Sir Wayne Hunter)
Just for the record, several years ago when I was a lad, I PERSONALLY
MET AND TALKED WITH THE ONE AND ONLY JOHNNY CRAWFORD FROM THE TV
SHOW "THE RIFLEMAN". We became great pals (tho I haven't seen him
since), yet I always abide by the policy of extending towards the
common folk the courtesy of allowing them to drop formalities such
as Sir or Mr. They seem to be so ever grateful and appreciative of
this small gesture of consideration on my part. One other piece of
advice, though, Wayne, don't let them become too familiar with you,
or, next thing you know, they'll be slapping you on your back,
spitting in your presence, and want to go fishing with you.
We must do lunch sometime. Have your people call my people.

P.S. My wife made a PERSONAL APPEARANCE on the original BOOM TOWN,
WITH REX TRAILER AND PABLO (not that F-troop fugitive Sgt Billy)

| RE: .46 Well, Wayne, they must've been rerunning the reruns ....
Saturday morning at 9:00 (cartoon prime-time) my 7 year old says, "You
watch what you wanta watch Dad." So, I hit the buttom for ESPN and
Fishin' Hole. Jerry's fishing for Lake Trout in the Northwest
Territories. Round about 9:20, it's Fish'n Buddies time and sho'
nuff, there's Wayne's boy and the story of the pike caught in his
sleep. Got quite a chuckle out of ol' Jer.
'Bout the best I can do is get misquoted regularly by the local
outdoor writer... asked him if Monomonac sucked or we did. He said
he'd ask around. Stay tuned.
BTW, DonMac, nobody's gonna find any notes on Connectict ... you
mispelled the keyword ;-).

| I found New England Rod and Reel, it's on 6pm on Sundays on Sports
Channel.
They were trolling Winnipesaukee for Landlocks and Lakers, in May.
It was ok. Although the guide seemed to know what he was doing, the
host of the show didn't impress me - nor did the quality of the video
and sound.
But it is fun watching local stuff.
