210.1 | boy...you're askin for it! | AIMHI::TOMAS | Joe | Wed Oct 29 1986 15:15 | 26 |
| WELL!! Seeing as it's "insults" that you expect from me....
whaddaya need a larger box for? ya can't catch fish with what you
have now!! Besides, if you fill up a larger box, you'll only get
more confused as to what to use and you'll spend most of your time
trying to decide what to use!!
On the more serious side...
The latest BassMasters mag highlighted a couple of interesting boxes.
One was a lighted tackle box from Fenwick (I think) for nite-time
fishing. What they DIDN'T tell you was its power source was a 12v
CAR BATTERY! (only kidding...it uses 12 small watch batteries!)
The other one that looked interesting and might do what you want
is Plano's new 787 box. The top of the box opens up and provides
what looks like a fairly deep well, of which one or both sides can have a
spinnerbait hanger. If only one is used, the other side could store
spare spools, tools etc. The lower section has 5-6 slide out drawers
with a number of compartments. No price was mentioned but considering
the price of a similar box (model 777) at Zyla's, I'd expect it
to sell for $60-70.
This is one that I'd be interested in looking at.

| Yeap, I asked for it... I figured it was worth taking some abuse
in order to live'n up this file abit...!
Anyway, the 787 is advertised for around $25 in BassPro's Christmas
catalog, not a bad price. Being interested in it, I went out and took
a look at it's predecessor the 757. The only change for the 787 was
enlarging the lid to allow for the spinnerbait rack up top. It's
a nice box, but I think I'm gonna go with something a little bigger.
Oh, and the drawer compartments weren't as adjustable on the 757
as on some of the other boxes.

210.3 | You can't get a *REALLY BIG* one for $25... | EUREKA::REG_B | Bicycle break-dancer | Wed Oct 29 1986 16:14 | 15 |

*BIG* boxes are very expensive. They float, often have their
own motive power, and are so incredibly huge that they actually
carry people inside them (vs being carried by people). I think they're
sold at places called "Marinas", or something like that. Anyway, don't
worry too much about them being so large that you can't carry them to
the water. For even more money there's a thing to hook onto the back
of your car to carry one of these *BIG* tackle boxes on, you back the
car into the lake and just sort of float the tackle box off, then you
jump into it (Yeah, *REALLY* !) and go fishin'

210.4 | They're never big enough!!! | AIMHI::FLETCHER | Bass_Buster_Fletch | Wed Oct 29 1986 16:51 | 18 |
| Wow,this file has been slow. All you fair weather types!
The only thing I was thinking about is how to keep all that stuff
from making so much NOISE on the bottom of the boat. My canoe is
fiberglass and Holeshot Joe's bass chaser is aluminum and no matter
what I try, everytime we get to a great spot and need quiet, I do
something that makes the box scrape (or worse!) and we both just
about jump out of the boat...
We've been talking about carpet, which has it's drawbacks (wet, soggy,in
the back of the car, etc.) The problem gets worse the more stuff
and boxes ya have, I suspect. Any tackle answers to this? I really
need a bigger box for next year also, but I would like to figure
out how to quiet it before the start of bassin' season.
I can't see how the drawer type boxes can help. My vote is for the
top-opening types-that way you get to see everything(mostly)...and
those drawers opening and closing...are they apt to be noisy?
Of course,I could just improve my coordination and not trip over
the box,I guess, but that would probably take physical therapy or
something.

| How about trying a cork wall or floor tile stuck on the bottom of the box,
you can buy them in a fine consistency similar to rod handles in sheet form
then stick them on using adhesive similar to Evostick or Tightbond. The edges
could be protected by something similar to the "U" shaped edging strip used
H9642 cabs.
Haven't tried this myself as we tend to use a fishing bag more this side
but it might work or give you an idea which could be improved upon.

210.6 | Saftey in Numbers..... | TORA::SCHOLZ | Ron....and thanks for all the fish | Thu Oct 30 1986 09:03 | 22 |
| It been a while, so I think that I'll toss my two cents worth in
to this note.
I vote for multiple tackle boxes. One for the worms, one for the
spinners and jigs, and one for crank baits. This way you can open
the one you need and the others can be stored. There just isn't
any "box" that can handle EVERYTHING you collect over the years.
This is what the pros do, for what thats worth.
If you have a boat, then it's no problem to have a few boxes. If
you carry your stuff, then you might have a small problem.
The biggest box I've seen is in BassPro. It has over seventy trays
and costs about $80. It also comes with a cooler attached to the
bottom as an option. I have no idea how much it weighs, but it might
solve all your problems Don. Of course, you could just buy a bass
boat and then you would have a floating tackle box as mentioned
-2.

| I stopped into Wilderness Taxidermy last night and checked out there
boxes. They had a box that I had seen in BassPro and was interested
in. The 2080U by Plastech, hip top, >70 compartments, and a bottom
big enough to hold spinnerbait box/rack AND a few worm boxes. Probably
wouldn't nees a seperate worm box with this monster. The tag on
it was around $65, BassPro has it for $50. Don Mac
Oh yea, on a side note... They also had a bunch of bass'n videos for
rent for $2 a night! Definitley going to check those out real
soon!

| I have taken the advice from others before so I am in the process
of getting my floating tackle box!!
But I still use a box for worms,weights, and hooks;
a box with grubs, jigs, and porks;
a box with spinner baits, crank baits and tools, spools ect...
I am planning on getting a hanging box for my spinnerbaits I don't
have room in my other box for all the colors and stuff.
From talkjing to people who have anging boxes which they use for
all baits they are great. No tangles of hooks you run into will
draw types. I seem to get a lot of them with 2-3 crankebaits in
one slot!!!
Good lunk on the choice you have winter to make it so don't do it
to fast

| I missed your .6 note, Ron, while I was writing .7
Anyway, the $80 big box that you were referring to is the 2080's big
brother, 96 compartments, they claim it's the world's largest tackle
box! The 2080 also has the cooler bottom option, but that's a bit much...
Does anyone know of anyplace around here that stocks Adventurer
boxes? They make some nice large drawer types... Don Mac

210.10 | there's big uns...and then there's BIG UNS! | AIMHI::TOMAS | Joe | Thu Oct 30 1986 14:15 | 26 |
| So Don...seeing as you've got your mind set on a H*U*G*E box, make
sure it's big enough to put your boat in, has rod holders, a live
well for your new basspirator and room enough to stand....cause...
if you put anything else in that boat of yours...I guarantee that
the first bass that you latch onto that jumps closer than 10' from
the boat will swamp you. (hey guys...remember the NH tourney??
A fair wind from Jamaica would have swamped him!)
...btw, Don...I just heard about a revolutionary NEW fishing lure
that I just know you'll want. It's a little on the large size,
so make sure you have enough room in your new box.
It's called a...........
G R A P P L I N G H O O K ! ! !
Geez...this is fun...ain't it?

A hardy har har...
But I have to admit, Stump Jumpa was fairly loaded down for the big
events. For all you fair weather fishermen out there who didn't make
it, I have a little 14ft john boat... When it's loaded up with, the
outboard, gas tank, trolling motor, 2 batteries (1 for the troll, 1
for LCR), 55qt cooler/livewell, cooler for beer/food, me, my slightly
overweight fishing partner (hey, Cris, we have something in common!),
and all our tackle - I DO tend to plow a little water! ...but most of
time I ride a little leaner...
So, Joe, are you looking for a new box this year too? I noticed you
were interested in that new Fenwick, with the lights... Hey, if you
got one of those, hung some dice on it, and a little dog who's head
bobs up and down, you'd have one similar to the one you got now! Of
course it wouldn't have Snoopy on the side of it, but if you got the
new Fenwick, your kid could get his lunch box back!
Yea, this IS fun! Don Mac

| I can tell that you're gettin JEALOUS! Just wait till I hang the
pom-poms up, fly a fox-tail from the antenna, and put chromed fender
skirts around my motors!
Besides...my kid's lunch box has served me well and now he'll be
able to eat lunch at school.
If you put anything else in your boat, you'll have to rename it
from Stump Jumpa to SUMP PUMPA (ha ha) cause that's what you're
gonna need to stay afloat!

| Just for the record, I ordered the Adventurer 2275 from Bass Pro Shops
this morning. It's a good sized drawer box (19 1/2" x 10 3/8" x 15"),
5 drawers, the bottom one being larger than the rest (4 7/8" deep)
with a lift out 44 slot spinnerbait rack and rack for 8 pork jars...
Now I have the whole winter to fill it up!
Let's not let this note die out, someone wanted to discuss rods,
there must be some other people out there thinking of getting new rods
also... From what I've read, the new 20' diving crankbaits should be
a big hit, "opening up a whole new depth to crankbait fishermen"
(I think that was one of the lines that I've came accross)

| And for those who suffer mal-de-mer, I understand that Detroit and
Tokyo offer assorted sizes of 4-wheeled tackle boxes able to navigate
sandy shores and inland trails under their own power! Ive heard
tell that they're none in some parts as "buggies".
But (almost) serously, Re: .5, seems our friends in the UK operate
in a manner similar to stateside surf anglers in toting tackle:
BAGS. While most surf bags only hold a dozen or so lures, you get
the oppurtunity to REALLY learn how to use that limited selection.
Do you guys really take 70 lures on each trip?!? Maybe I should
open a mail order business in this file.

| Rich, to answer your question, YES (at least for me). I carry at
least 150 lures or more everytime I go out. Do I use them all????
He** no!!! There are at least 20-30 that I have never used. I'll
bet that there are others out there that do the same. Buy and then
never find that "perfect time" to use what they bought. Or, they
find one or two that seem to do the trick and use them to the exculsion
of the others. But no matter, you can never have to many lures;^)
Don, have fun with your new box. I couldn't find that model in the
'86 cat. to check it out, but it's sounds like a good'en. The most
fun is in filling it up..........:^)
I'll talk rods in the future, and just to comment on them to start,
I do think that the new 20' crankbaits will change some peoples
rod selection.
Tight lines, Ron
ps. I'll be going to Fla. over the Thanksgiving week and expect
to have some interesting results to post when I get back. I just
can't wait till Spring.....noway
