180.0. "fall fishing help" by JUNIOR::FLOOD (AL) Sun Sep 14 1986 22:58
My fishing partner and I went out fishing both days this weekend
on the pond we have been fishing most of the summer with good luck.
On sat. I was reasonably successful with 1/2 dozen bass from too
small to a little over two lbs - my partner was basically skunked.
Sunday was a wash out for both of us.
some facts:
this pond has worked well with shiners, worms and crankbaits in
the past. We usually catch our fill of small and largemouth bass,
some crappie, sunfish, hornbout and ocaasionally a perch or pickerel
The water runs in depth from shoreline to a max of maybe 6 feet
- we haven't found any deeper holes yet. THe pond is basically covered
on the bottom with a weed that looks like a combination of a short
needle pine and fern with occassional lilies and a few spots where
weed hasn't intruded yet. Most of our best fishing has been a shallow
spot about 3 1/2 feet deep that is open but surrounded by the above
mentioned lilies and weed. This is where my partner caught his 7
1/4 lb'r earlier this summer.
the action on sat was best about 6:30 pm till dark with shiners.
Worms and other lures etc did not work for anything - only the shiners
were working. On sunday we caught some sunfish on worms but otherwise
basically dead
the question
how shpould fall bas fishing be done - bait, lures, time of day,
part of pond to fish etc
BTW rubber worms have never worked for us at any time or part of
the pond
thanks for help

180.1 | S L O W D O W N ! | BURREN::WATERSJ | THE LEGEND OF THE LAKES | Mon Sep 15 1986 15:44 | 10 |
| Now that it will be getting colder the water temp. will be dropping!
This will cause the bass to slow down even though that is a signal
for them to start feeding BIG time for the winter fat they'll need.
I would say slow down on your retrieves when using lures. And when
it starts to get real cold at night it might be wise to go fish'in
in the late afternoon when the water temp. is its warmest! Bass
generally like to feed in 68 - 70 degree water! The shallow water
that has been in the warm sun all day will be the place to run that
jitterbug over when dusk comes around.

180.2 | Try "Real" Pork Rind | TURBO::MIKRUT | | Mon Sep 15 1986 17:31 | 9 |
| Fall can be a great time to fish. I found the best fishing to be
after dark, say 1/2 hour after the sun goes down. One of my favorite
baits is a Mepps spinner (doesn't matter which one) with a piece
of "Real" pork rind attached to the treble. I like to cast from
the shore and just kinda of let it drag along the bottom sorta real
slow-like.
