Your best bet would be to go out on the Eastman Part Boats
in Seabrook N.H. It's about 1 hour and 15 minutes ride. Another
choice would be Smith and Gilmur, just across the river
in Hampton, N.H. If you fish with Eastman's, I'd recommend
going out on Lester Eastman's boat (used to be called the
Lady Gala Diane). If you fish with Smith and Gilmore, I'd
recommend Rocky's boat (the Northern Star).
Anyway, these guys are real fisherman and make a good attempt
to help you catch fish. Most head boats just run you around
and take your money and really don't care whether you catch
fish or not.
Both boats are fast and both guys fish Jefferies ledge. Your
likely to see whales also. Most of the whales are feeding
on northern Jefferies this year.
Call either for reservations and/or departure times.

| Also, you might want to check the paper for the Marine Forecast.
If it says 1 to 3 feet, thats' fairly calm. 2 to 4 feet though,
and its going to be somewhat rough.
Cape Ann runs party boats, 1/2 day charters, bluefishing, night
fishing, whale watching. You might want to give them a call.
This is out of Gloucester, MA., and its called Cape Ann Marina.
Good Luck with the fishing.

| Like it was stated in reply #.1, good luck in locating a fishing
service who does not specialize in just joyriding around the
ocean and not locating any fish. I've had that experience, and
it's a total drag.
Also, be careful what you girlfriend eats before you go out, or
otherwise she'll be spending her glorious trip "feeding" the
fish, if you know what I mean. I guarantee, she'll never go
out again. Do not, I repeat "DO NOT" eat eggs "over-easy"
style. Make sure you bring plenty of food, though, cause
appetites start to soar on the open seas.

| I went out with Smith & Gilmore in April and it was prettyy good
He's in Hampton.
40 of us from Salem went out with Eastman in June and it was
lousy. He said we were Fishing Jaffries Ledge, but he didn't know
where he was because you could still see land and there;s no way
you can see land from Jaffries. I've been there dozens of times.
The boats at Cape Ann Marina are the Yankee Fleet. They are by
far the best party boats in New England.

re: 4
Jefferys Ledge is an under water extention of Cape Ann.
It extends northward to directly in front of York beach
and Cape Neddick in Maine. In front of Cape Ann, the
ledge starts Approx. 3 miles from land. The boats
refer to this area as the southern or South Jefferys.
The northern portion is generally referred to as North
Jefferies. The party boats fish the whole thing. Where
they fish depends on where the bait is and the bottom
fish that follow the bait. On a clear day you can see
Cape Ann from any where on the southern portion to approx
20 NM north. If you're on the northern edge you can see
Mt. Agamenticus up in Maine (altitude 673 feet).
The fishing in general this year has been pretty lousy.
First the dogs moved in early and then the bait moved way
up to the northern part of the ledge. Spring/early
summer and late summer/fall is generally the best for
the serious fisherman.
You can always go on an overnighter to Platts, Fippennies,
or Cashes at anytime and get a lot of fish.
I double checked this past weekend Lester Eastman now
calls his boat the Lady Lesley Diane.
I'll stand pat and recommend only Lester Eastman in Seabrook
or Rocky on the Northern Star (Al Gauron's) in Hampton. Both
Captains strive to keep track of where the fish are and
fish accordingly.

Moderator, feel free to move this to wherever it belongs. I looked
around but could not find the info..
I never made it out deep sea fishing this year and was wondering if
the trips are still going out and where my best bet would be to go? I
love Cod and would love to put a few in my freezer. Any info would
help.
thanks

There are many places along the New England coastline that offer
Deep-Sea fishing trips. It does seem that the price of these trips go
up every year. I went out of Perkins Cove(Ogunquid Beach, Me) this
year with my daughter. First time for her but she did well. Between
the two of us we got eight Cod. Her largest was 25 lbs and mine was
29 lbs. We fished on a foggy day in about 190 ft of water. Biggest
Cod on the trip was 65 lbs caught by the only other girl on the boat.
For a half day on the boat with rod and tackle and cleaning the fish
it was $25, per person. This was in July. I'm sure that most anywhere
you go it will be about that price. Of course, it will be about
double that for an all day trip. There are boats in Rye Harbor and
Hampton, NH. Also Seabrook, Salsbury, Glouster, and Newburyport Ma.
Its now coming to the end of the season. They will go out as long as
the weather is warm.

I am pretty sure they both have trips until at least late November.
Yankee Fleet has been having a great year.
Good luck.

| FYI...
I went out on the Bunny Clark out of Ogunquit, ME last Thursday. Overall,
the fishing was terrible that day. I caught 10-12 cod, but only 3 were
keepers (barely). Pool fish was only 8#s. The wind was really blowing and
we were bouncing all over the place. I've never been sea-sick before, but I
was starting to feel a little queasy before the day was over. Several guys
were in touch shape and spent most of the day hanging over the side.
Only a couple of days before I went out, the Bunny Clark went out on a
"marathon" trip, 5 AM to 5PM, with a max of 16 people. They went out about
45 miles and brought back about 2000 lbs of fish! Not bad. They'll be
doing several more of these before the end of the season.
Although this trip was not so hot, I would highly recommend the boat and
skipper. His name is Tim somethin_or_other. This is the same boat I went
on a year ago and caught the three largest fish to win the pool. Biggest
was a hake at 37.5 lbs with large cod at 18 lbs.
The Bunny Clark is planning to run thru Nov. 15th, or so. Telephone number
is (207) 646-5575.

you talked about?? Sounds like I might go on this one since it will be
my first and last one for this year.. Also can you give me directions
on how to get there??

| As i recall, the marathon trip was either $70 or $75, including rod & bait.
Directions....hmmm...Rt 95 north, take the exit before the toll both marked
Rt 1, Ogunquit. When you get into town, there's a small 7-11 type store on
the left (it's open early). Right after the store, hang a right and follow
the signs to the water. Or ask for directions at the store. Reservations
required for the trip.
Let us know how you make out.

I was wondering if there were any charter boats to catch flounder?
Are there places at the Cape where you can rent a boat for a day?
I know in Quincy Bay there were places, but I'm not sure about

173.28 | Try a pink shrimp teaser | VICKI::DODIER | Food for thought makes me hungry | Mon Nov 26 1990 15:39 | 21 |
| Up until my last trip out, (about a month ago), I was a dedicated
bait fisherman. The last trip made me a believer in the jig. I used a pink
rubber shrimp as a teaser 18" above a 14 oz. diamond jig. The diamond jig
had irridescent silver prism decals on two sides to give it some extra
flash.
I did a short underhand cast about 20-25' out from the back of the
boat and let it sink. Many of the cod I caught were already on by the time
the jig hit the bottom. If I didn't have one by the time my jig hit
bottom, I'd jig it back towards the boat and reel in the slack after
each pull.
As far as I can tell, the secret to my success seemed to be the
pink rubber shrimp. I forgot where I got this from but I believe some
of the tackle shops at the party boat piers carry them.
FWIW - I wound up with 25 lbs. of cod "fillets." Almost every cod I got
jigging was caught on the teaser. My father was fishing right next to
me. After fishing the whole day, using bait, he only caught one cod.

173.29 | How we do it on the Sweet Dream II | 11SRUS::LUCIA | Just one more cast! | Tue Nov 27 1990 08:38 | 36 |
| Blue, White, Green or Yellow bucktail teasers tied on a 6/0-8/0 O'Shaughnessy
work as well as pink shrimp (they resemble sand eels, or sand lances) and they
last longer too.
What we usually do is tie two dropper loops, about 18" apart and 18" above the
jig in 80# mono. 14-17oz Norwegian cod jigs are the main jigs on Sweet Dream
II. In 50' or less, sometimes a 9oz is better, but only if it's very calm
out.
On the two dropper loops, tie your teasers. I personally like a green/white
bucktail with a blue flashabou strip. Pitch the jig a bit downwind if the
boat is drifting. Find bottom and reel up 2-5'. Jig up fairly sharply and
let the rod down smoothly. Repeat every 5-10 seconds. At least once a minute
re-find the bottom (essential if drifting).

| One more thing about jigs...
The size of the jig you use is largely a function of the amount of current,
the depth of the water _and_ the line weight that you are using. Most of us
routinely use 50 lb test line for codfishing, thus the use of 16 or 17oz
jigs when fishing 100-220 ft of water. You need that much weight to reach the
bottom efficiently and to keep the jig vertical in the water column.
However, if you switch to 20 or 30lb test, you can get away with a 9 or 12oz
jig in the deep water. Sometimes the fish like the smaller jigs.

Hi, Well I did not make it out fishing friday as I said but
I did make it out sunday with Yankee Capts. I was going to try
jigs but the crew and capt said bait (clams) were working well.
There were about 5 or 6 guys jiggin with little luck and after a
while everybody was using clams. The fishin was ok. I ended up
catching 10 cod (5 keepers) and 1 8 lb cusk (sp?)
This was the Final trip until next spring from the Yankee fleet
ships..

173.33 | Let us know how you do | VICKI::DODIER | Food for thought makes me hungry | Thu Jan 24 1991 09:27 | 16 |
| I can't say how well they will be running but the fish that you do
catch should be in real good condition. It will be easy to keep the fish
cool during the which day should make for nice firm fillets. They will
probably be worm free this time of year too. Another plus is that you can
use bait instead of jigging which makes for a less expensive trip (vs. $5
a pop for a lost jig).
A tip I picked up on my last party boat trip is to bleed the fish.
The mates were doing that to the fish they caught and you could see a
noticable difference in the color of the fillet.
To bleed them, slice the thin piece of flesh on the bottom of the
fish that connects the body to the head. If you do it right, the head
hinges back. It takes about 2 seconds to do.
Good Luck..........RAYJ

| I agree, cold water = prime fillets. When I used to live in Mass
I liked to catch the early cod fishing at Plumb Island in the surf. The
fish were small (probably illegal by today's laws) but the fillets were
the best. It was uncomfortable fishing but tolerable as long as the
brandy held out.
You've got me thinking...lets see April 1st is how many days away?
