153.0. "Where to buy the goodies" by JETSAM::COREY () Mon Jul 14 1986 18:22

I haven't seen this anywhere else in the file so I'll ask.

I want your opinions on where the best places in the area (Mass,
    S. NH) are to buy various "best bet" tackle mentioned in this file,
like the Jelly Worms, Mepps, Bill Plummer frog, Hoola Popper, etc.
Sure, a lot of you guys will say "they're sold EVERYWHERE"!,
but have you ever really noticed the condition of the tackle
racks at Herman's, K-Mart, etc. this time of year? Picked clean!
And they DON'T re-stock this time of year.

I'd like a place that most always has what you're looking for -in stock-.
Catalog outfits are find if you can stand the wait. I like to be
able to replace my lost stuff right away when I get home, just in
case I get the urge to take a weekend afternoon off to get some
    bassin' in.

    Thanks in advance!

PS: I know Spag's is good. For example, I wanted some of that
PRIME mono by Shakespeare. Herman's, K-Mart, etc: $6.99 (whew!)
SPAGS: $1.99 (not a misprint!!) Spag's has the right prices, but
they still don't have the greatest selection of tackle.

Zylas in Merrimack,NH has a reasonably good selection of tackle
at reasonable prices. Another place that I like to go to is the
Wildlife Taxidermy Shop in Manchester on the Massabesic Circle.
Although they are not a "discount" house like Spags or Zylas, they
DO HAVE a great variety of tackle and I often find plugs, worms,
etc that I don't find elsewhere. Unlike the discount stores, these
guys specialize in sporting equipment and can provide much better
advice than the part-timers you find working at places like K-Mart
and such. I don't object to paying a little more for good advice
plus I can always stay informed of the "hot spots"!

153.2Zyla's is hard to beatTORCH::MACINTYRELife's great, then u live forever.Tue Jul 15 1986 09:5711
I'll second Zyla's, yesterday a bought a couple of Jitterbugs there,
    $3.39 a piece, elsewhere I've seen them for $4.50....

They have a great selection, and the prices are hard to beat.
Although they have tons of rods, I don't think that I've seen shimano
reels there. When I was shopping for my reel, K-mart had the best
price around, however they were sold out, and they weren't sure
when they could get me one. I ended up paying $5 more at Service
Merchandise, they stock alot of tackle also.

153.3The local tackle shop....SPMFG1::CUZZONESExotic Dancers. $350/wk plus tips.Tue Jul 15 1986 10:2616
I do most of my tackle shopping at K-Mart in the spring and through
the various catalogs (Cabelas, Bass Pro, Fish'n Shack) over the
winter. But, during the summer, I like to patronize one of the
local shops which specialize in hunting and fishing gear exclusively
(Franchell Sports in Holyoke). The prices may not be the best but
the selection is outstanding and the news and advice I get there
are priceless. When you talk to one of the folks behind the counter,
you're dealing with an experienced fisherperson who not only goes
out fishing 6 nights a weeks, but talks to dozens of others like him-
self daily. I'm not saying these guys will lead you to their honeyholes,
but they will tell you what's biting what and suggest a couple good
places to fish. Probably the smartest thing you can do before fishing
a new location is stop by a local tackle store and ask for help.
Try that a KMart sometime. Hah!

Dick's tackle on Grafton street in Worcester has a pretty good supply
of bass tackle. If he doesn't have it on the shelf he's willing
to order it for you with a short turn around.

There is a small time tackle shop right behind the fire station
in Hudson, Ma. The guy specializes in fresh water bass and the
like. Has lots of worms, spinner baits, and plugs such as
hulla poppers, gitterbugs, crazy crawlers, and the like. Also
sells shiners for those fish that like real meat.

I buy a lot of my tackle from The Fair on RT 70 In West Boylston.
It is kind of out of the way but worth the ride. I have found them
to have a very good supply of both fresh and salt water tackle.
I think there is on in Aubourn on RT 20 also. They also sell Mass
    hunting and fishing license.

I do most of my tackle shoping in bulk, like 100 packs. I do most
of it through Bass Pro Shop. Call on a monday morning and by friday
    noon you have it.

As for Dick's on Grafton street he good. Has lots of stuff.
If I want something and don't want to make an order Dick's is were
I go. As for the place in Hudson that JV mentioned I believe it
is called the Wopper Stopper. It has one of the BEST spinner bait
selections I have ever found. The prices are very good.

As for a big junk store the fair in worcester and Most K-marts
you can find the big name plugs. But you may not find the color
    or size you want.

I have had good luck in recent years with Fin n' Feather on rte
140 in Upton, Mass.. They are supposedly a Bass Pro Shop and are
primarily strong in lures; they even have a fairly good trout
selection.I f you ever get to upstate N.Y., (specifically Oswego),
Port City Sports will absolutely blind you with it's famous "Wall
    of Chrome".
After all, the first rule of trout fishing in large bodies of water
seems to be "if it looks like a '57 Chevy or a low rider, a Trout
    or Salmon will murder it.

153.8JELLY WORMSNISYSE::DUMONTWed Jul 16 1986 10:429
Lately I've been looking for a tackle shop with a good selection
(size, type, and color) of MANN'S JELLY WORMS. Shops I've dealt
with in the past have changed to different brands. The only dealers
I can think of that have a decent selection is the Kittery Trading
Post, or BASS Pro Shop. Any suggestions fairly close to the Nashua
    N.H. area.

    Thanks

153.10"Barnicle Bill's"TURBO::MIKRUTThu Jul 24 1986 14:014
A good place to go is "Barnicle Bill's" located on Rte. 119 in
Littleton, Mass. He's got a lot of good quality stuff and the good
thing is that if he doesn't have what you're lookin' for, then order
it and he'll have it within three days.

Another vote for Zyla's excellent selection of tackle, rods, reels,
and other various equipment. Last time there I spent a couple of
hundred dollars on rods, reels, and tackle. To answer a question
asked yes they do carry Shimano and a good selection of models.

Just in case anyone's planning on heading to Zyla's to pick up
any tackle... Don't bother. It appears that they've put away ALL
their tackle for the year. Went there during lunch today to pick
    up some trailer hooks... nothing...

Anyone know of any good tackle shops in around the Littleton area,
besides Barnicle Bill's? I want to pick up a couple spinnerbaits
at lunch. Bill's is the only one I know of around here, any others?

Are there any good tackle shops in the Westboro, MA area???

Hudson has a great bait and tackle shop next to the firehouse near
the rotary in the center of town. They carry more stuff than any
other shop I've been to in the area.

Anyone know of a place that the large drawer style FLAMBEAU
Adventurer 227x series of tackle boxes - for under $100...?

Bass Pro no lunger carrries this box. I called Flambeau and they
have had a MAJOR price increase since I bougght mine (that got stolen).
The new inventory now sells for $99-$125 -- however they said that
if I could find someplace that had older left overs they may be
    cheaper.

Service Merchandise has some Daiwa baicasters on sale for $29.

I don't recall the model number. I was there on Saturday and swung
by the reel case (looking for those green clearance tags) and
noticed this reel on sale (not clearance, just a sale).

I checked it out and was pretty impressed, so I bought one. For a
low dollar baitcaster it looks pretty good. To me, it feels better
than my ABU Lite (another low-end baitcaster).

Glad to start seeing descent baitcasters at the low-end...
