| Some large lake like Webster or even some of the more out of the
way lakes like Tully (in Royalston). I dont' think that the traffic
will be much of a concern if we have it "after" the Labor Day weekend.
That would sort of signal an end to all the skiers and such (????).
Just as an aside, how does everyone "rate" the fishing differences
between NH. and Mass.???? Based on all the reports in this file,
the fishing is better in NH. Penalties???????????;^)
The guest idea is fine with me as there are probably (not just you
Bob) some Deckies who fish with outsiders and use their boat. Since
we are talking TEAM fishing (I think), it's only fair that you have
the best shot at beating anyone :^)
Anyone object to a $10 per boat/$5 per man entry fee. Pay out to
the first five places per 10 boats entered. That is, if 20 boats
get in you pay 10 places, if 10 boats get in you pay 5 places. After
all, we aren't in this for the money (are we??) but for the bragging
rights and back slaps........Right??? So, the money should be
secondary and just sort of a gas payer. Right? :^)

146.3 | Vote Against Webster Lake | AKOV68::SHANAHAN | Head for the mountains.... | Wed Jul 09 1986 19:41 | 7 |
| I vote against Webster Lake as it is much too large for the
folks that don't have the 100hp. I'd much rather see it at a smaller
lake. But, what ever's decided I'll go along with it.
I agree with the $5.00 a man. I also think we should wait until

146.5 | Equalizer Lake? | EDISON::DOTY | | Thu Jul 10 1986 13:20 | 12 |
| Quabbin might be a good choice -- the boating restrictions (max
10 horsepower) plus the availability of rental boats would greatly
equalize competition, and the lake is large enough to provide
reasonable opportunities. Don't know how MDC feels about tournaments
though, might be an issue.
Also, there are NO skiers on Quabbin.
(I just tried Q. for the first time, and enjoyed the day -- the
smallmouths in that lake FIGHT on ultra-light tackle!)

| I thought of Quabbin but I don't know if those di-hards in the big
boats like Ron could give it up and rent one. Heres the deal with
quabbin. I believe the boat only cost 10.00 for the day with a motor
and 5.00 with out. The price is right. We would have to meet very
early to do it, so every one who needs a boat can get one.
As for a tournament they don't mind. The pay off they would on
there property. I was in one there once before and the weight in
was on the road outside of the ramp.
I up for that if you folks are. Note Horse power limit is a 20
horse if you boat will take it.
and for the folks with the big boats, they can take off thier props
and use just electrics if they want.
Out of gate 43 you can catch bass at the ramp. 8 would be no good
for the bassin, 43 also has good fishing.
I'll will vote for Quabbin. .,.....
any one else.??

| Quabbin has the main lake (noted for smallmouths), and a large (2
mile long) pond attached, which they claim has a good largemouth
population (I can't vouch for that -- yet!). The pond allows canoes,
while Quabbin itself doesn't. Thus, an important part of your fishing
strategy would be where to fish!

| Yes, Manchug is a great lake with both kinds of bass there, and
we discussed it in an earlier note. Singletary is also okay, but
not that great of tourney lake due to the lack of adequate parking.
Manchug has plenty of car/trailer room. (and a good lanch). It is
also the right size for either canoes or larger boats. That time
of the year should see a reduction in the normal skier traffic too.
Cast my vote for Manchug.............

| Lake Manchuag is in the towns of Sutton and E. Douglas. It has
been bass managed by the state, meaning they zapped the pond check
fist and taged a bunch. Then stalked it two times with Tiger Muskies
to clean out some pan fish. The pond has a very old history as
a small mouth bass pond, But today Large mouths are the main
attraction. The smallies are the in great number but you have to
know what your doing to catch them. It has admediate fish right
at the ramp for any size boat. Many nice Big rock structores, which
are all marked.
The lake was expaned about 20 years ago. The old dab was blown
up and the lake made much bigger. The old dam is still on the pond
with a set of markers to mark the passasge way. So the lake has
many stone walls which provide super cover in the water.
To find Manchuag pond go I395 to ext 4e Sutton Ave Sutton. about
5 miles, as you go down a hill pass a country store and a white
Church the 2 right after that. Manchuag Rd. at the corner you
will see signs for camp grounds and such 2mi down lake on your right
lake starts. Follow lake till you go by a ymca camp down hill and
at bottom ramp on right. NO SIGN if you hit lake again ot the dam
turn around and the ramp was about 50feet behind you.
Good lunch. But its been getting a lot of fishing presure so
please catch and release so every on can have a chance.
I release a 6lb 10oz last week there and one over 4 wednesday.
So the bigones are there.

146.16 | The Manchaug Story...One Mans' View | TORA::SCHOLZ | Ron....and thanks for all the fish | Fri Jul 11 1986 10:58 | 24 |
| Manchaug Pond is located in Sutton/Douglas with the ramp located
off Manchuag Road/Torrey Road (right where they meet). Manchuag
can be accessed very easily from hwy 146 and I would suggest most
use this as the main way to get there. The exit is plainly marked
and the road you exit on is Manchaug Road.
The lake is 360 acres with a max depth of 30 feet. Primarily a
weedless body of water, it has abundant rocks and this has to be
watched for. There are serveral weed areas scattered around the
lake that offer good largemouth habitat, but the drop offs and holes
offer most of the best fishing. It's a clear water lake with visability
to about 10 feet.
The lake is well developed and shore fishing is limited to just
two main areas. Around the launch area and on the northern shore
line along Manchaug Road.
It has all the usual fish, bass, both large and small, prickrel,
and assorted pan fish and perch.
All in all, a good lake that has to be fished well, but will produce
some nice size fish in the 2-4 lb range.
Hope this helps. Tight lines, Ron

It appears that the NH tournement is starting to shape up, however,
I don't think anyone has had any experience running one. Perhaps
you might provide some insight as to what should be done. I think
we'll probably use the same ground rules as MA to be fair, then
we can compete on an equal basis.

try to get things going. BTW...one thing I don't have is a scale,
any ideas as to what we could use that might be accurate enough?

They were there on the depth finder, but wouldn't take anything

146.36 | Are there Bass in Manchaug? | SPMFG1::CUZZONES | 28 flavors...no vanilla | Mon Aug 11 1986 11:19 | 32 |
| Well, 3 hours on Manchaug yesterday morning resulted in no bass
over 3 inches for 3 of us in a canoe (the curse of the 3's?). Found
it to be an interesting body of water, though and was surprised
when I caught a healthy yellow perch of about 12"! Never seen one
that size before.
Without revealing any knowledge gained on the scouting trip, I would
like to post a warning to all persons for whom the tourney is their
first visit to Manchaug. Watch out for rocks!!!!!! There is an
old dam across the mouth of the inlet where the launch is located;
it is about 6" under water and there is a narrow channel cut through
the middle and marked with 2 buoys. There are several islands
surrounded with shallow water and one pile of rocks with a marker
pole surrounded by another ring of rocks 30' out. The shore is
almost 100% rock and the rocks extend well out from shore. The
key to safety on Manchaug would seem to be alertness and low speeds
unless you're out in the middle and away from islands. We did not
scout the whole lake as traffic began to pick up but I am assuming
that what we saw is indicative of overall conditions.
As we were fishing our way back along the shore to the launch and
passing by the old dam, George said he'd like to have the propeller
concession for the lake. 3 minutes later, didn't some fool try
to fly his boat right over the dam! As the boat ground to a halt,
the fool turns in our direction, and we recognize him as a fellow
DEC basser who will remain nameless only because his lovely wife
outfished us all and will lead us back to the spot where she returned
her prize smallmouth to the water unless she wants her husband exposed
as the fool ;-).
See ya on the water,
Steve

146.44 | report on Manchaug | BOVES::WHITMAN | boves::whitman MRO1 297-4898 | Thu Aug 21 1986 09:39 | 36 |
| To All Mass DEC tournament entrants,
Well tournament fan's due to circumstances beyond my control, it
is my humble duty to report on last night's fishin' trip to Manchaug with
Bassin' (or is it Backlash) Bob.
We went up the lake and we went down the lake. Mostly we fished by the
rocks (for those of you haven't yet had the pleasure of fishing Manchaug the
rocks are everywhere). I washed most everything in my tacklebox and some
of the stuff in Bob's box. Although my fish was by far the longest, Bob
claims that his tailwalking smallmouth and two keeper largemouth gave him
"braggin' rights". If I had known those "braggin' rights" went to the most
'bass' and not the longest fish, I sure wouldn't have wasted my time catchin'
that big pickrel.
If you got out with Bob, you've got to watch him close. He takes you
to all his favorite haunts and has you fish where the fishes ain't while he
sits in the other end of the boat and fishes where the fishes is. He has you
hook the bass that are only two feet from the boat while he struts his stuff
with a smallmouth that don't seem to like stayin' the the lake (tried to jump
in the boat at least three times). Another thing you got to watch out for when
you fish with Bob, when you're both standing in his flat bottom boat he moves
quick without warning you, tries to upset your fishin' concentration by
throwing you off balance (what goes around comes around). Gee that must be why
I have to write this and not him, ya that's it he disturbed my concentration.
Seriously, Manchaug certainly has the structure to hold the bass. I
know when I get out there in my boat, I'm going no where 'fast'. With the
water a low as it is, the rocks in that lake will tear the bottom out the boat
in no time. Great for fishing, tough on boating. Bob pulled in three nice
fish last night. We lost more tackle than I'm used to, but like they say "if
your not losing tackle you're not fishin' right."
Thanks for a good evening's fishing Bob. Hope we can do it again.

146.49 | boat draw | SEDJAR::ERRICO | | Tue Aug 26 1986 16:41 | 22 |
|
Hi,
Well Rhonda (wife) and I will be there on the 28th. Haven't fished
Manchaug for a number of years but remember many good days of fishing.
I think there should be some discussion on take-off. I have seen
tournaments where we let the small boats and canoes take off early
only to be swamped when passed by 5 150s comming up on plane.
It's even worse in the middle of the draw. Something should
be set up to protect everyone and give all an equal chance.
I have a Ranger and am not worried for myself but wouldn't want
to worry about anyone else either.
I would like to suggest that the small boats go out 20 minutes earlier
than the bigger boats and have 2 time weigh-ins and take-offs.
What does everyone think???
John

Hi John;
Thanks for the suggestions. Since the people running this(myself
and Ron) want to fish ... You want to stop fishing to do a weightin?
Didn't think so. What we plan on doing is as follows all boats
with power will draw for a start. person how draws last number
will call off the numbers 5sec or so in between boats. after last
boat is off all the small boats and canoes can go at once. all
non-powered boats will have an extra 15 minutes to come in.
Well what do you think?

| Bob mentioned that "they" were drawing down the lake for a winter
weed kill. Well "they" did, and the rocks that you could easily
get over are now just below the surface and waiting to eat your
props. Just ask me :^(
The water is down about 2 ft and the channels to the old damn site
now have water that is less than one foot. No problem for small
craft, but murder on big bass boats.
Word of caution............go slow and keep a sharp eye out around
the launch and inside the old damn. Its not bad outside in the main
lake, but be carefull around the islands and between them. After
I dinged up my prop, I was watching the water a lot more and came
across quite a few areas where the rocks had come up to the point
they could cause a problem, where in the past they weren't even
visable.
Tight lines, Ron (and_no_broken_props)
ps. I hit the rock I did at the slowest speed my boat will do. I
mean I was just put put-ing along. If it had been aluminium there
wouldn't be any thing left of it. As it is I will have to work on
this one for quite awhile to get it squared away again.

| Ok folks here is the water story at Manchuag. So new &^&&& as
bought the water rights to this pond and the one below. He is using
it for a waste water treatment plant in Douglas. He does not know
what he is doing and has made a few mistakes (BIG MISTAKES). He
had all the locals down and made at a meeting two weeks before the
holiday. He had dropped the water so low people could not use there
dolks and such.
I called the gentalman last week. He told me that the water
level in the lower lake is fine. He has all the boards in the dam
on Mnachuag and does not see any dropping of it for a while. Should
be ok for our tournament.
Bassin' BOb
P.s.
For all you people who don't know the lake. Watch out for the rocks
around the ramp. stay in the center channel while the big motors
are running. once out in the lake watch out for the rocks along
most of the shore line. The middle of the lake has a sand bar Isaland
It makes a triangle. The part visble being the outside edge. If
you head from ramp towards the part you can see sooner or later
you will hit it. It is all sand. If you get even with the YMCA
camp on the shore thats about were the bar starts.
DON'T DRIVE between ANY island and the shore. Big boats with electrics
or canoes can.
Good luck.
Bob.

we are getting together on the 28th at manchug for a dec bass tourney.
we talked about it awhile and he said---"why don't you tell the
entrants that the northboro trading post will offer a twent five
dollar gift certificate to # one-15 for # 2 and ten for number three.
i said heh that's really cool richard!!!
the gift certs are for fishing tackle only.

Greetings to all HALIEUTIC persons. The big day is almost upon us. So this
will most likely be my last update. The following is a list off all people
and rules. Good luck to all and see you on Sunday.
Special thanks to Ron S. for help with rules and humor.
Bassin' Bob
Sunday Sept. 28th will be the first Mass DEC Bass Tournament.
It will be held at Lake Manchuag in Sutton Mass. Launching from the state
ramp only!. OFF LIMITS TO ALL ON FRIDAY AND SATURDAY before.
The entry fee is: $5.00/person , and a optional $5.00/boat lunker pool.
All entry money goes to payback: 40%-1st 30%-2nd 15%-3rd 10%-4th 5%-5th
Big fish gets lunker pool.
It will be an 8 hr. tournament. Starting time 7:00 (AM) and check
in at 3:00 (PM). You can check in when ever you want to if you wish
to leave early. (if there is nobody there to check you in, you will
have to wait.....the checkers are going to be fishing too) Be there
by about 6:00-6:30 (AM) for drawing and launching.
We will start from the old damn, by the markers. Starting position
will be determined by draw and the last draw will be the "official"
starter. The intent here is give the smaller boats enough time to
clear the damn area before the next one goes off. Any kind of boat
is allowed, and you are responsible for your own safety. We won't
check for life vests, etc.. Insurance and such is the fishermans'
responsibility.
All Non-powered boats do not draw. They will all start after all powered
boats leave. The NON-powered boats will be allow an extra 15 to come in.
They will weight in at 3:15 sharp. This is a friendly tournament so this
15 min grace is granted.
THE RULES: as far as we see them now.
First Rule: Keep all the other rules simple. This is for fun not
profit.
Second Rule: Remember First Rule at all times.
Okay, now that I got my attempt at humor out of the way, lets list
some of the basic rules.
NO TROLLING :^(
We will use standard mass fishing and boating rules.
Large or small mouth BASS only. The size requirement is 12in closed
mouth to closed tail. Meaning you can pinch the tail closed and
get about a 10th of an inch more.
This is a catch and release tournament.
We won't punish for dead fish, but all contestants must have some
form of live well. This can be a cooler which you change the water
in as needed, or any other form of "reasonable" container. The "intent"
here is to keep as many fish alive as possible, so we can "catch
and release." Dead fish can be taken home for dinner by those wishing
to. I suggest you all use some form of live-well enhancer..Catch
and Release is one brand name and only costs about the price of
a six-pack. Since it relaxes the fish, it also can turn a "short"
into a keeper ;^)
You have to release all live fish.
This is not a "sponsored" event, by DEC or any other agency. We are
on our own.
Nets are allowed and you can use any bait on a rod EXCEPT live bait.
No hand lines and such. Rod and Reel only.
No LIVE BAIT or PREPARED BAITS ie smelts or frogs.. PORK IS ALLOWED ie
pork rims or pork worms or strips.
NO MORE THAN ONE ROD AT A TIME/person
First boat on a position has the right of way. If the boat is moving
in a direction you can't jump in front of it, but may go in behind
it. Distance of control is an "estimated" 100 yds in front and 50
yds behind. The idea is to not crowd other boats, like we do all
the time when we fish regularly. Remember that there will be other
non-tourney fisherman out there, so watch who you yell at. If you
want to come in and talk to your friends in other boats, stand off
and ask first. BE POLITE.....
- If boat A is anchored and boat A has trolling motor up, and he
notifies to boat B that he is anchored, boat b must give a 50 foot
distance when passing or approaching boat A.
- No one is allowed to leave there boats during the Tournament to
go up on shore or into the water after a fish. You may leave the water
if it is witnessed by another boat. No boat is allowed to get
within reaching distance of each other and passing objects between
boats is disallowed. (bring your own beer)
Now folks I have been told by a few people fishing with ... lets say...
wives... Who may not want to fish all day (AL) So we will allow to drop
of said partner at the ramp , and allow the individual to fish by himself.
Is this OK to all (AL) :^)
As of today the entries are as follows.
Ron Scholz - Boater partner Garry Wiersum :^) OK???
Lou Hohos - non-boater partner Ed Saunder

The results are in!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well it was a very warm nice day on the lake yesterday but the fishing was
not as nice as the day. Not too many fish were caught. We had the tipical
tournament problems: ie John and Brian launching with no plug, or maybe
Ron's trailer going for the deep six,,,, almost. and off course the last
minute arivals. All in all it was a nice day. We had 14 boats + 2 canoes,
and of course people who's boats would not start!!
From the talk at the ramp every one had a lot of fun and talk of next year
was floating in the air.
The top five teams were:
tie for 4th: John Accica, Briam Keefe
1lb 13oz Jeff Starit, Mike Loewe see a canoe works!!
3rd: 1lb 15oz Kyle Wooldridge, John Goodhart
2nd: 3lbs Ron Scholz, Garry Wiersum

146.79 | The Saga of a Run Away Trailer.... | TORA::SCHOLZ | Ron....and thanks for all the fish | Mon Sep 29 1986 14:58 | 53 |
| Okay Joe, I'll give you the story on the "infamous trailer debacle."
My "trustworthy" partner unhooked the trailer from the car to run
back to the house (because I forgot the beer). Forgetting that it
was on a incline, he didn't chock the wheels. Shortly after he started
to pull out, the trailer did it's immitation of a dos-de-do. Backing
down the slope and doing a 180 it proceded to waltz right into the
ramp. Luckly it caught on the side and didn't actually make it to
the water. We then picked it up, righted it so to speak and parked
it on the side.
Now this would normally be enough to make one's day, but not "my"
Partner. Oh no, he had to go one better, but at least he saved it
for a parting shoot and didn't waste in the morning.
Upon returning to the ramp in the afternoon, he hooked the trailer
back up and backed into the water. I then put the boat on it, but
"quickly" found out that he had failed to latch the ball joint.
The trailer of course, enjoying it's new found freedom, jumped off
the ball, and if not for the saftey chains would have done a better
job than it did in the morning. That is, try and make into the lake.
I really do wonder if the trailer felt that it needed a bath. It
sure tryed hard enough. (and so did my partner :^)
So, there is the story behind the trailer saga. I'm taking offers
for the movie rights as of this AM.
All this aside, the fishing really wasn't all that bad. We had a
bit of wind at times that made holding the shore a little more work
that you might like to put in, but most of the time is was calm
to just a slight breeze. The bass were there, but hard to entice
into biting. Lots of Pike, Perch, Pickrel, and Pan fish. Must have
boated 15-20 of various kinds. So from the fishing side of things
I would have to rate it a good day overall. Just that the weren't
enough bass:^(
My congraulations to Bassen Bob. For a while there I thought that
mine might hold up, but he had to wait till the end and pull this
monster out of his live well. Ask him how it "almost" got loose
and back in the water *before* he could weigh it ;^) Now wouldn't
"that" have made a great story.
I think that everyone had a good if not great time, and I for one
can't wait till next year for the next Dec Bass Master Classic!!!
On the personal side, it was really great meeting some of the people
who contribute to this file. Now that we have some faces to go with
the names, I can't help but think that this file is going to be even
better than it already is.
Tight lines everyone and see you all next time. Ron

146.81 | Trailer Hitch Caution | JETSAM::COREY | | Mon Sep 29 1986 17:14 | 14 |
| Re: Trailer Handling:
DON'T expect the hitch to hold the ball when winching the boat back
on. I saw a man get his leg broken when the hitch let go of the
ball as he attempted to winch the boat on with lots of water in
the stern section. This was at Sebago when high waves were breaking
over the transom as he was loading it. He was stradling the hitch
and cranking away when it let go, flew up quick and HARD (from all
the weight in the back) and hit him in the thigh. The force broke
his leg. Now I'm real cautious around hitches!!
Just thought I'd post this here as a caution.

he's really a good guy and liked being a part of our turney.
let him know how much we appreciated his sponsership.
also let him know what you would like to see him stock as his selection
is somewhat limeted.
he also asked me to let him know next time we do it so he can get

as i menntioned in a previus note, we should talk to our local tackle

be afraid.
oh, by the way i asked if he had any books or whatever on the proper
handling of trailers he didn't.

146.89 | Who Me? | TORCH::MACINTYRE | Life's great, then u live forever. | Wed Oct 01 1986 12:47 | 19 |
| Your right, Garry. But, it feels a whole lot better putting the blame on ol'
Stump Jumpa, then it would blaming ME AND MY PARTNER!!!!
But on the serious side, this was mine and my partners first year as bass
fisherman. I fished alot, and learned alot, even caught some big fish, but
I'll be the first to admit that we're still a little green.
Speaking of fishing skills, I have to say that I was impressed with the caliber
of bass fishermen we have here at DEC. I have to admit, these tournies turned
out alot more hard cores than I would have imagined. I was drooling all over
the launch. Ranger, Cajun, Basstracker, Monarch, Jason, Dynatrac, Glasstream,
to name a few. Yea, these boats don't catch fish - but their owners have a
tendancy to! I guess it's because (in most cases) you don't lay out serious
cash for a serious bass boat unless your a serious bass fisherman.
Anyway, (fishing) hats off to you guys!
Don Mac (as I said, gimme a couple years, then LOOK OUT BASS'N BOB!)

146.90 | boats don't make fisherman | GAYNES::BPUISHYS | Bob Puishys | Wed Oct 01 1986 13:27 | 22 |
| Don,
My partner is not going to be able to fish the Quinsig deal.
But I may be able to arrange for a boat. If you are interested
25$ entry is a small price to pay for an eight hour day of fishing
and learning amount the "big bass fisherman".
Just remember that the boat I was in at manchuag is my partners
not mine. I started and still uses a 'stump jumper as you call
it'. I have caught more and bigger fish in my jon boat than in
Ken's boat. The only advantage of a big boat is confort. 8 hours
is a long day in a small unstable boat.
With my jon boat with no electrics or anything other than a
9horse and OARS I work more on basics and fishing right. People
in big boats tend to work much to fast in a tournament. In a boat
with oars you will be suprised how many fish you can catch in a
small area whenb you have to row around.

146.92 | The new boat jinx! | ANT::NOYES | | Thu Oct 02 1986 15:45 | 16 |
| bob,don,
I can speak from experience that the boat doesn't catch
fish. Last season my partner and I fished out of one of those 2
man boats. The only power we had was an electric, and with that
little unit we managed to stay in the top 10 in points in our club
all season. Now this year I purchased the basstracker and have yet
to bring one fish to the scales. When my partner and I sat down
and talked about this we came to the conclusion that we were in
fact fishing much to fast. We didn't concentrate enough in any one
area, it was just to tempting to jump around all over the place.
I think they call it the new boat jinx, and believe me it's a hard
one to kick.
So don't worry about the boat, just fish hard.
