125.4 | Peanut Butter and Jelly worms | SPMFG1::CUZZONES | Put me in, coach. I'm ready to play. | Fri May 23 1986 12:22 | 25 |
| Bob, I have not used a lot of different worms, but I've recently
been doing some comparison fishing with the no-name worms I bought
by the pound at the last outdoor show and some Mann's Jelly worms
I had left over from last season. I bought the no-names in all
colors and body-styles all in 6" length. The jelly worms are grape,
strawberry and motor oil/marmalade. They all have a flat tail for
a little extra action and they're 4" long. I can't be sure why,
but the jellies outcatch the no-names by 3 to 1 with no appreciable
difference in the size of fish (bass) caught. Color seems to matter
because when one color stops catching fish, I switch to another
color and can usually catch a couple more from the same spot. I
know that goes against the whole color-C-lector system theory, but
it's true. But, fish are individuals as much as people and maybe
some fish are more conditioned to strike at one color and some fish
more conditioned to strike at another. Maybe it's even a phisiological
diffence between the fish. Any way, when the current supply runs
out, I'll buy more Mann's, 6" in every color made.
The only other worms I've tried have been Chummin (sp) worms and
they caught nothing for me.
A word of caution: if you use jelly worms, remember to pack a lunch.
Their smell makes me hungry for a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

| Steve,
I have used the Mann's worms jelly and fs4-54 worms. The grape
or purple jelly was my favorite. The fs454 worms work alot better.
The stuff is so good I bought a tube.
Good luck with the peanut butter and try a bannana with it some
time!!!!!

| Trapper, you could probably make a fortune with that over here.
Don't bother testing it; as one current ad suggests, "Some lures
catch more fishermen than fish". I've seen glitter worms, two and
three tone worms, candy striped worms, but never a plaid one. I
figure you use all the plaids (different clans?) and you've got
a whole line; card 'em, shrinkwrap 'em and ship 'em over. Need
a partner?

PS I foresee your tv ads giving serious competetion to Jerry Clowder's
Majic Bait spots for the bizarro award. Practice saying "Whoooooooeee"
as loudly as possible.

125.8 | FS454 Field Test | SPMFG1::CUZZONES | Wild Geese fly high | Tue May 27 1986 08:46 | 18 |
| In a serious note, Bob, I bought a tube of Mann's FS454 and tried
it out this weekend. I was out on Pontoosuc searching for the Tiger
Muskie and it was a little slow. So I grabbed a lighter setup
and rigged a grape worm. I smeared a little paste on it and tossed
it toward the weeds. For the next hour I forgot all about the Muskies
as I hauled in Smallmouth after Smallmouth, pausing only to replace
the worm or smear fresh paste on the boy. I was so intent on the
bass, I wasn't ready when a big muskie passed right under the boat
(it might have been a northern). I almost fell overboard reeling
in the worm and throwing out the muskie-killer (big spinner with
a tail). I spent another 1/2 hour throwing that spinner but no
luck. Maybe I should have smeared it with FS454. I later tried
the FS454 trick on bluegills but either they're not susceptible
or they were too intent on guarding their nests. Doesn't matter,
I'm convinced it works on bass. Thanks for the tip.

125.9 | fs454 -- flamming hot-- | BOVES::BPUISHYS | Bob Puishys | Tue May 27 1986 11:03 | 24 |
| Steve,
I still think fs454 really works!! Yesterday just before dark,
I was just heading in last few casts, and there IT was a big hawg
4-5 lbs just slowly moving in the weeds. 2feet water. I had a fresh
8'' motor oil/metal fleck worm on. Had lots of FS on it,(the hook
shank had a lot because I squized the tub a little to much so th
scraped it off my had and put it on the shank) I flipped the worm
4 feet past the fish way off to the side(what a s**() flipp) well
the he saw the boat and started to swim slowly away. Just so happed
near the worm. I gave it a few twitches, he stopped turn and swam
at it, I twitched it again as he approached. He grap the squirm
tail and started to chew, then spit it out and went right for the
hook end soucked it right in and started to swim away. I set the
hook on my four foot ultra light and the fight was on. well my
girl friend first attempt to net was fish was so unseccessful an
the fish gave me such a good figh i just tryed the hook release
and flipped it off. Nice fish and it felt good to se it swim away
on harmed.
Well now that that flame is over.... Fs454 on the hook must have
been the trick!!!!
sorry for the flame. Good fishing

125.10 | Do-Nothing.... | FELIX::SCHOLZ | Ron....and thanks for all the fish | Tue May 27 1986 12:52 | 21 |
| Bob,
Okay, back to the original question. Do-Nothing-Worms are not really
do nothing worms, they are just another type of worm. Four inches
long and "usually" rigged with the hook open, not Texas rigged,
they are made by Jack Chancellor who used them to win the B.A.S.S.
Classic last year. Used this way off the weeds beds and jigged or
twitched like most other worm rigs. Jack also rigs them with a weed
guard on the hook when he tosses into denser cover. He also rigs
them with a trailer hook to get short strikes. The name comes from
the fact that the worm doesn't have the "action" normally seen with
other types of worms. NO fancy tail on his. Typical use would be
with very small if any weight and pitched or flipped to the edge
of the weeds or cover, then just let it sink. You can of course,
use this technique with any worm.
I don't use them up here as I believe that you need the action in
the north that you don't need in the south because of the higher
temperatures.
Hope this helps. Tight lines, Ron

I believe the origin of the "do nothing" worm was over 10 years
ago with Charlie Brewer (who invented the slider as well). The
technique involves using a flat, lightweight jig head and small
thin specialy designed worm which is retrieved at a very slow, steady
and even speed. The worm looks like a dead stick in the water, hence
the name. Chancellor may be getting all the press, but he owes Charlie
Brewer some mention. these have been documented in the old Fishing
Facts magazines for years and are reputed to be most successful
after (UGH!!) cold fronts.

Re: do-nuttin-worms...
From what I've read, all the action for this worm has to done by
the guy holding the rod. I can't remember who it was, but one
technique used was to cast the worm and to shake the rod tip slightly
as the worm dropped. This put a vibrating or jiggling action on
the worm and is supposed to be very effective.

125.16 | do nothing - but catch fish | SPMFG1::CUZZONES | Wild Geese fly high | Sat May 31 1986 12:49 | 11 |
| I was thumbing through Cabela's latest this morning and looked over
the pictures and description of the do-nothing. They offer no details
on how to fish it - you have to pay for that. It is described as
a system; worm, sinker, red bead and swivel, two hooks. It looks
like a cigaret; staight, untapered, short. In fact there's even
a smoke/fire color combination. Since the spring catalog, they've
added a do-nothing with a tail. Looks funny. $2.99 gets you the
system including 5 worms ($3.29 with tails I believe). I'll bite.
Stay tuned.
