Some of us bass types do do those strange things like wad and TROUT
fish but we try not to tell too many people.
As fo rthe deer field, I olnly fish the catch and release area.
up by the Hoosauch?? train tounel to the dam. A micki fin streamer
works well, But that close to the dam is not to safe when it opens.
As for the small mouth never fished for them there.

| I like to get out there with waders and stalk those finicky trout.
As for the Millers River, the best fishing is strictly in Winchendon
and Ashburnham. This is the only stretch that is stocked with mostly
rainbows and some browns since the browns seem to be able to survive
the summer. It's basically one of those put and take areas. Sometimes
in the fall when the water is right and there are extra fish around
another stocking occurs. The problems are it is fed from a warm
water source (Whitney Pd, Naukeag Pd, Lake Monomonac), has it's
share of pollution problems along with Otter River, and has a history
of flooding. The mills have water rights and control the amount
of water flow during normal periods. There are also two flood control
reservoirs at Birch Hill and on the East Branch of the Tully River.
Anyway, between Rt. 202 and just above the point where Otter River
joins is good fishing (canoeing at times). The most accessible
area could be the Birch Hill Wildlife Area where there's McLaughlin
Trail. When the dam is closed and this is flooded forget it.
Otherwise, long slow riffles and pools are abundant. Bait, spinning,
and Fly fishing all produce particularly the latter. After all,
where do you think the Millers River Special fly came from? :-)
By the way, there is Lake Dennison in the area which is stocked
and has a campground, and Priest Bk. flows into the Millers which
is stocked with brookies and rainbows. A nice catch of fish can
be taken here.
The Deerfield has got to be one of the top trout rivers in Mass.
The no kill section is between Fife Brook Dam and downstream to
the B&M RR trestle. No live bait here, but you can fish with lures
as well as flys. Anywhere below here for the next 20 miles is worth
fishing and bordered by roads. We're talking pockets, pools, boulders
runs, white water, and riffles. Excellent! Farther west, one can
catch wild brook and rainbow trout in the Oxbow and Wilder Brooks
where they reproduce naturally. Any of the standard lures and flies
produce. Mepps, Rapalas, Goldfish, Roostertails, and the streamers
Mickey Finn, Black Ghost, Muddlers, and a variety of the dry and
wet flies (Cahill, Coachmans, Quills). CAUTION: The power generating
dams on this river release water from time to time. When a shrill
whistle is heard or signs of rising water get out. People have
gotten trapped out in the river and so long, they're history. When
the water rises travel a few miles downriver and you're good for another
hour of fishing then repeat.
good fishing...
