116.0. "Coast Watch" by NYALYF::HORWITZ () Thu May 08 1986 18:20

    Is there anybody out there fishing the Atlantic south of New Jersey??
    I could really use some reliable info re: what's being caught as
    the migrators (mackeral, stripers, blues, etc.) start heading north.
    While I can put together some schedules based on local info, some
    catch data from the south could help the longer range planning.
    Needless to say, I am more than willing to reciprocate. (As secretary
    of a saltwater fishing club I get pretty good, in depth reports
    for the north Jersey shore.) Hopefully my reports can help those
    to the north of me. [NOTE: what goes noth in spring goes south in
    fall]

    While this weekend was a blow-out for me (20-30 knot winds), I did
    see a couple of anglers with "legal" (>24 inch) stripers taken at
    the Sandy Hook "Rips". Also, in between tossing fresh worms to the
    crabs, I noticed many party boats working just outside the surf
    for ling (hake). Since they hung in there for most of the day they
    were probably catching fairly well.

    A question for those in New England - WHAT HAPPENENED TO THE QUINCY
    BAY FLOUNDER??? Down here we usually drool over the reports from
    Quincy, but this year there hasn't been one word about this place.
    What gives?

    Here's hoping I have more to report next week, and that someone
    out there can clue me in as to what's coming up the coast.

    Tight lines,
    Rich

    What happend to the Flounder??

    		about 500,000 gallons os shit!!!!
    we haven't fished there now for 3 years. The had a value problem
    in the shit plant and dump all that raw stuff into the bay before
    it could be fixed.

    	We fish Buzzards bay down the cape now. Fish are much slower
    but seem to be bigger. Don't have those fill the cooler days anymore
    ether.

    			well good luck down south

    Bassin' Bob-
    At least you guys know about shit plants and valves. Down here every
    toilet in New York City flushes right into Jersey waters. (We learn
    very early not to fish barefoot!)

    Except for last year, I fished Hurley's and Harvey's in Quincy for
    about the last five years. The flounder was great. I didn't know
    about any valve problems dumping s**t into the bay, but I did hear
    it was polluted last year. Thats why I havn't gone back yet.
    Looks like I'll have to find another flounder spot.

    Mike,

    	Try the cape!!! Buzzard bay is ok. We used to launch out of
    Harvey's then we found a free lauch in ???? down near the ship
    yard. Well the cape is much slower fishing but are they fat. And
    the water is so clear you can see the fish sometimes. Just launch
    after you cross the bridge that says welcome to buzzard bay. Drive
    down the road to the redtop tackle shop for bait then backtrack
    back to the ramp. There is a free town ramp or at the boat place
    I thick you can get a boat if you don't have one.
    	Go out into the bay just off of the Mass Maritine Academy find
    a sandy bar and fish. !!

    	good luck

    re -1
    Me again.
    The only problem with down at the Cape it's too long a drive. Do
    you know of any boat rental around Newburyport for flounder fishing?
    I live in Leominster now, and route 2 to 495N is a much shorter
    drive to the North Shore than the Cape.

    I know the ride is the pits. I like to get my day to go so he will
    drive and I can sleep!!!!!. I can't help on Newburyport, but would
    be interested in knowing about a few places and how they produce.

    Try Gloucester! There's a free launch behind the high school. My
    uncle and I used to take cod, pollack and haddock.

    Hey guys -
    I need some more help re: Quincy. 2 of my buddies are determined
    to fish for flounder up there on Memorial Day weekend. We need some
    info on where to rent a boat and where to go. Also, any current
    news (even the lies from the newspaper would help!).

    Thanks,

116.10Is no news good news in this case?MORRIS::MLOEWELow_in_sugar Low_in_salt..LowenbrauTue Feb 24 1987 16:285
    Does anybody have any new news on Quincy Bay being polluted?
    Have they cleaned it up yet? I'm getting anxious to do some flounder
    fishing this spring.

116.11Quincy Bay Fishing !!!HPSCAD::GATULISWed Feb 25 1987 12:5922
    Tried to find it out myself Mike. It really depends on who you talk
    to. Here's the best answers I could got:

    1. Nothing wrong, catch and eat all you want
    2. Don't eat anything, it's polluted
    3. The most common reply from people I know who fish there believe
        the color of the flounder determines if your is a clean area.
        They contend that if the wite side is very white, the fish aree
        etable and if they look at all yellow, toss em' back and move.

        As for any stripers and blues, most feel you don't have to worry
        about the pollution because these fish are transient to the
        bay.

    Although I personally are afraid to eat fish out of there, you can
    go there any day and people are carting away flounder and cod by
    buckets and trash cans full! They don't seem to worried. I'm not
    aware of any "official" statement as to the hazards of fishing the
    bay.

116.12Quincy Bay!MORRIS::MLOEWELow_in_sugar Low_in_salt..LowenbrauThu Feb 26 1987 08:539
    Hi Frank,
    Well having fished there for the first time about 8 or 9 years ago,
    the fishing has always been very productive. It was not uncommon for
    three of us in a rented 14' boat to catch a 150-200 flounder.
    I hear there some good flounder fishing further south or north.
    Although the yields are much smaller, some of the flounder is of
    larger size.

116.13I think its polluted!CAD::PRUNIERFri Feb 27 1987 12:4415

    	You can't tell if a flounder is "bad" from the color of its
    belly, the yellow colored ones are Lemon Sole, and believe it or
    not (from my expirience) taste much better than the white belly'ed.
    As far as I know, Quincy bay is polluted , due to the fact that
    they (Boston) dump tons of raw sewerage into the bay daily. That
    fact does not stop many,many people from fishing there or eating
    what they catch. If you are relly interested, contact the Quincy
    DEQE and ask.

    							Steve

    .... I would much rather eat fish caught off cape cod, of any species!!!

116.14How 'bout this year?NYALYF::HORWITZFri Mar 06 1987 15:067
