Well...I'm back from Cajun Country...and still in one piece! Ole Phideaux and me didn't get along too well at first, but Coonass gave him a swift kick in the rump to straighten him out. I did get worried at first when he started to drool and lick his chomps, but I just kept my distance. Boy...it was an experience to remember. Coonass has got himself a basser's paradise! Everyone of those cypress trees in the water has the potential for a HAWG...and there's THOUSANDS of trees...and stumps...and brush piles... and weeds...and more weeds!!! OK...OK...y'awl wanna know how it was?? I GOT ME A HAWG!!! (Well...in my book it was!) A 7.5 pound cajun largemouth! It was almost dark, the water was like glass with an occasional water moccassin slithering by, and I cast my favorite surface plug (Crazy Crawler) up next to a large cypress tree with big roots coming out everywhere. I let the ripples clear and then just gave it a little twitch and then... KABOOM...THE WATER JUST ERUPTED and this HAWG sucked down that plug and headed for the roots. Fortunately, I had enough foresight to change from the 6lb. test line to 12lb. test a little earlier, because I would never have been able to horse him out. I must have played him for about 5 minutes or so before I boated him. He was well hooked and I sure would have liked to play him longer but I was afraid that I'd lose him in the weeds so I hauled him in as fast as I dared. But did he JUMP!! I swear he must have cleared the water by 3 feet! Unfortunately I had left my camera in Coonass's other boat as we had some trouble with his electric motor, so we were forced to switch boats just before going out Saturday night...but it registered about 7.5 lbs on the scales and was 26.5" long. I let out a shout that must have carried a mile through the swamp...and I damn near swamped the boat! Overall...fishing was great...no...it was FANTASTIC! I caught a number of 2-4 pounders while Coonass caught a several that went 4+ lbs. !!! It was an experience that I'll never forget! Hey Coonass...again... many thanks for your hospitality. I can't remember when I've had so much fun. Even if we didn't catch anything...I would have still enjoyed it!! For the rest of you out there...especially us New Englanders...you haven't experienced bassin until you've fished the south! ... to be continued ... -Joe-
