| | Joe,

I have one.....they work, and they are not mountable. They are meant
to be hand held and stored when not in use. You don't need all the
colors, as about 8-10 will cover about all the situations. I got
mine on a "pre" release offer and used it all last year. As to weather
I caught more because I was using the "right" color or not, I can't
say. My saying that it works may just be justifying the money spent.
You'll have to determine the added beni's for yourself. Bill Dance
swears by it, and others have said just about the same thing. I
do agree that it will make money for the tackle boys. One thing
I did find was I didn't need to buy all that much tackle. I do now
think of buying in these color combinations though.

Tight lines, Ron (waiting for big bass this weekend)

| | Thanx Ron...
As you say, you've got to determine how justified an expense it is. I have
seen them advertised for as little as $59.95 which makes it a little easier
to swallow rather than the suggested $79-89.
I did see recently (I can't remember where) that a company had devised a
mounting device to clamp on to the side of the boat with the cable on
(what looked like) a self-retracting spool.
As far as the lure selection goes...I've also seen in the Bass Pro catalog
several lure packages that included fast-drying paint in Color-C-Lector colors
such that you could duplicate a color in minutes. There was another set-up
that included 6-7 magic markers where you could color one of several included
plugs and then wipe the colors off with rubbing alcohol to use over again.
Like I said...looks like another tackle box!
(Maybe I'll just drink the alcohol!)

| | Yea, I guess you are right Joe, now that I think about it. I did
buy about $40 worth of worms and such (color coordinated, of course)
from ProBass this last month. Sucked in, hook, line and sinker.......

Oh well, they say you can't fish in heaven, so might as well enjoy
    it now...........

    Color it expensive, Ron

| 75.6 | Color everywhere, but not fish to catch | FELIX::SCHOLZ | Ron....and thanks for all the fish | Tue Mar 11 1986 09:16 | 21 |
| | The instrument has 3 color bands on it: one for clear water (you
can see the probe below 4ft.); one for stained water (you can see
the probe between two and four feet); and one for muddy water (the
probe disappears in two feet or less). The probe is a light sensitive
(photocell) knob. It measures the amount of light getting to the
depth you wish to fish and converts this to a color that has been
proven to tbe the best color a fish (bass - mainly) can see. The
probe is attached to the meter by a coaxial cable that has one foot
markings on it (you have to put them there).

I use mine in conjunction with my pH meter. By finding the "break
point" of the pH and it's depth, I then lower the color probe to
the same depth and use one of the colors it tells me too. Each of
the bands has normal colors associated with it and over the top
of these bands is a "fluorescent" band of colors. By mixing these
two, or using one or other, your chances for catching fish is
supposedly enhanced. Like I said earlier, I think it works, but
would have a hard time proving it, as I didn't conduct any experiments.
If anyone out there has, please input your results.

Hope this explains it for you. Tight lines, Ron (color_me_waiting)

| | I might point out that this device is a COLOR-SEE-LECTOR, not a
COLOR-CO-LECTOR. It selects colors, it doesn't collect them. I
would expect that its use would be limited in Loosiana.

| | Hey guys,

I don't know what you think, but I think this "color c lector" is
on the shady side of bass fishing. It seems to me to be cheating
just alittle bit, you know I have always thought that finding the
right lure or in this case the right color was a large part of being
able to call your self a master angler. As the coonass said earlier
you might as well use a stick of dynamite.

p.s. What ever happened to good old fashion skill.

| 75.14 | Color is in the Eyes of the Beholder | FELIX::SCHOLZ | Ron....and thanks for all the fish | Wed Mar 19 1986 09:37 | 31 |
| | I don't know Jack, maybe it is, but if so it's just a signpost along
the way and not a fork in the road. For one thing it doesn't find
the fish for you and doesn't catch them for you, so that skill is
still there and for that matter is still there no matter what you
do or use that modern technology has supplied us.

We started up this road a long time ago. The first thing that comes
to mind is the casting reel, which replaced the pole allowing you
to do things that couldn't be done up to then. It's sort of funny
that the rage in fishing now is "flipping" which is nothing more
than imitating what the cane pole use to do. The depth finder and
the pH meter and the graphpite rod and "scents" and rattle lures
and plastic worms, etc., etc. all mark this well traveled road.
If you use a spinning reel (open or closed face) is that on the
"shady side" of fishing. This reel was invented in Europe to make
trout and salmon fishing easier for people and more "fun". It re-
placed the flyrod which a lot of people couldn't master.
I guess where you call a halt to it is up to the person. I for one
use all these "things" since they increase, or I think they do,
my fishing pleasure. I know my grandfather would never use anything
but a cane pole, but that was his choice. Though I will admit he
caught more fish with those than I ever did with all the casting
reels and lures and stuff that I had at that time.

To sum it up, the most important part of fishing is still finding
the fish and then catching them is the fun part. When something
is invented that guarantees me a fish everytime I cast, I'll quit.
That would truly ruin it for me.

    Tight lines, Ron (color_it_fun)

| | Hey Ron,

I hope you don't think I was getting down on you or anyone
else that uses the Color C Lector, I was just kind of kidding around
alittle bit. I have always said to each his own, in fact I would
not mind trying one out sometime just to see how they work. Oh and
one more thing, I got the membership form for B.A.S.S. from you
in the mail the other day so you can be expecting your cap soon.

                                    Thanks Alot :^)

| | Jack, no no no noooooooooooooooooooooooo. Never even entered my
mind. I think that the view you expressed, even in fun, is one that
    has merit.

There are a lot of fisherpersons out there that don't think that all
this "new fangled" stuff is good for the sport. They would like to keep
it simple and more like the "old days". I have read several articles by
pros that think we are getting carried away with "technology". I even
agree with some of it, but being a weekend fisher, I take what I can
use to increase my chances of having fun (catching fish). If I was
retired and living on a lake where I could fish anytime I wanted, I
would probably just learn the lake and never have to resort to
    selectors and finders.

I'm glad to hear that you got the membership application. As for
the hat, I already have three of them, so this one goes to my
    daughter. She thanks you............

If there is anyone else out there that would like an application,
    I have plenty.

    Tight lines, Ron (first_day_of_Spring_and_its_25_out)

| | They've combined the portable ph selector and the color-c-lector,
added a temperature probe and tossed it all into one dash mounted
unit! They've even eliminated the *hassle* of having to drop the
sensor over the side. Now there's a transom mounted electric reel
that does it for ya! Naturally, the probe depth and all the other
vital statistics are have their own separate display screen on the
    monitor!

| | I own the combo color-c-lector ,purchased it from bass pro shops
with my Bass Tracker V-16 Semi-v ,as for mounting it you may gain
more versatility using it from the case since readings need to be
    taken as depth's change.
As for matching lure colors to color-c-lector colors: try the tapes
in flouresent etc. colors, and marker pens much cheaper than trying
to stock the full range of colors on the color-c-lector bands.
I have experienced both failures and successes with using it,although
my gives water PH and temperature and costs $20.00 to $30.00 more
than standard unit,I hope this info was helpful-----TIGHT LINES-----

| | I'VE HAD A C-LECTOR SINCE THEY WERE RELEASED... WHEN I FIRST GOT IT
I MOSTLY EXPERIMENTED WITH THE COLORS IT SHOWED AND COMPARED TO THE
KNOWN FISH PRODUCERS AT VARIOUS TIMES OF THE YEAR ON TOLEDO BEND
RESORVOIR... FOUND IT TO BE FAIRLY RELIABLE AS TO WHICH COLORS THE
    BASS COULD SEE BEST...STILL USE IT  ESPECIALLY IN DIRTY {MUDDY}
WATER...I NEVER HAVE GOTTEN INTERESTED IN Ph BUT IF I WERE GOING TO
BUY A C-LECTOR I WOULD GET ONE WITH ALL THE WHISTLES AND BELLS, ONLY
    COSTS A LITTLE MORE...BTW I DON'T BUY THE C-LECTOR LURES SOMEHOW OR
ANOTHER THEY JUST DON'T LOOK AS GOOD AS THE LOCALLY PRODUCED LURES.
I FOUND I CAN USE THE C-LECTOR AND THEN SELECT A BAIT IN THE COLORS
AND DO VERY WELL. AS FOR THE Ph I JUST PAY ATTENTION TO THE COLOR OF
THE VEGITATION UNDERWATER... HOWEVER THE LAKES IN THE SOUTH ARE MOSTLY
    SHALLOW AND FULL OF STRUCTURE..
