73.0. "Creating Bass Structure" by ASGMKA::TOMAS (Joe) Thu Mar 06 1986 09:26

Just a quick comment about bass structure. No matter where you go or what
bass magazines you read, the emphasis is almost always on learning to
recognize structure. Well, knowing this to be very true, I've decided to
help a little on a couple of my favorite fishing spots by CREATING some
structure.

I've cut down a couple of large, dead pine trees and laid then down onto the
ice while ice fishing to help things out a little. Also, I plan to hit the
ice once more just before I feel it's unsafe and place some large brush piles
out on the ice so that when the ice melts, the brush sinks and VOILA....
STRUCTURE! Of course, I plan to place these brush piles in a few not so
obvious places so that they aren't visible so that at least I'll have a
"secret honey-hole".

I've also read that old tires make excellent structure, so I think I'll
take a few with me and start building up a few spots to help create more
stucture. I don't advocate building a dumping ground in a lake or pond,
and I'm sure there are laws governing dumping as such...especially in large
lakes and pond that are reasonably populated. I'm only concerned with a
couple of places that are out of the way and don't get much traffic or
fishing pressure. (don mac...keep ypur mouth SHUT ... please!)

Okay, now that we know there are still "some" great bass'en waters
left around here, let me interject a thought on creating structure.

I think that done right, this is one of the great ways to help increase
the survival rate of the sport, by increasing the shelter for spawning
and therebye the ability for fry to survive.

BUT.........it has to be done right and not just by throwing out
bush and stuff. There are some good articles on building your own
lake (pond) and how to build the components such that they create
a "habitat". These can be found in various books and magazines on
the subject. The main thing to remember is that just putting out
structure and thinking that this will bring bass is not always the
way to go. The "stuff" that you put out has to relate to what's
all ready there or it won't do any good.

Bass movements are governed by "pathways" and these always relate
to the way structure is set up. You must think like a bass to be
able to gain any advantage by building your own "honeyholes". If
the is no "pathway" to your built structure the bass will never
get there. Just food for thought.

And finally, yes, the use of tires and such are a great way to help
    build "bass havens".

You're sure you want to keep this one a secret,HUH????

Gee whiz, Ron....every basser has gotta have ONE "honey-hole" that he keeps to
himself. If I let on to everyone where it was then it would probably end up
being destroyed! In fact, and I honestly believe this, I think my spot has
the potential for a state record, however, IF I caught it, I would NOT reveal
its location to NH Fish & Game for fear of it being inundated with crowds.
Look what happened to Potanapo Lake after the state record was caught back in
1967....the lake is now a mess and few people fish it because it's been
overfished. I'd probably try to lie first about where I caught it and if
the F&G folks got wise, then I'd just give up my rights to claiming a record
fish. But at least I WOULD KNOW!

I agree with you about the proper placement of structure. I've fished for
bass long enough to know that you just can't put it anywhere. I'll definitely
be putting the brush piles and tires in strategic spots that ONLY I WILL KNOW!
Gawd...I can't wait.

BTW...I have let on to you folks (in earlier notes) 'bout some GOOD bass
spots in NH and as I continue my saga of exploring new waters, I'll keep
you all posted.

    Ahh that's all right Joe,

If I had one that a state record could be in, I'd keep my mouth
shut too. Good luck and if you have any luck, let us know.

As an aside, can you tell me anything about SQUAWM LAKE??? (or anyone
else, for that matter). I'm very interested in that lake ever since
Larry McKinis did a show from there a couple of years ago, and of
course, after seeing the movie On Golden Pond, which was filmed
there. I might even like to see if I could buy a summer fish camp
on the lake. Can you help here???

    Thanks and tight lines........Ron (heading_south_for_some_BIG_bass)

Just for 'the record' - Joe didn't tell me where his honeyhole was
either, he mentioned that he had one, and just out of coincidence,
while we were talking, "I" mentioned a place - his grin gave it away,
he then told me that *that place* WAS his honeyhole - and begged
me not to let anyone know!

and speaking of creating structure - real good idea, I've never heard
of it before, but it makes a lot of sense...
