| I just started to fish that body of water later last year
and missed all of the hot early season action. I'm still just
starting to find my way around there and also to pull in my first
laker. When I can't get to Quabbin, I'll be there.

71.3 | WACHUSETT UPDATE | PIGGY::VARLEY | | Tue May 06 1986 14:40 | 15 |
| I LIVE 2 MILES FROM WACHUSETT, AND FISH IT A LOT, BUT THIS SPRING
HAS BEEN AWFUL, SAVE FOR SMALL LANDLOCKS CAUGHT JUST OFFSHORE ON
SMALL SHINERS WITH BOBBERS OR SLIP SINKER RIGS. MOST BIG FISH ARE
REPUTED TO BE CAUGHT ON SMELT (ILLEGAL IN THE RES.) AND IT IS BY
FAR A MORE PRODUCTIVE BAIT THAN HARDWARE PLACE (SINCE I DON'T USE
BAIT, IT MAKES FOR LONG DAYS...). I HAVE MAPS OF THE RES. WITH "HOT
SPOTS" CLEARLY MARKED FURNISHED BY PAUL KUKONNEN, AND IF ANYONE
WANTS ONE I'LL BE GLAD TO SEND ONE OUT. MY BEST GUESS IS THAT WE'VE
HAD A VERY UNUSUAL SPRING, AND AS SOON AS THE SMELT START TO RUN
IN THE RES. ALL HELL WILL BREAK LOOSE FOR ABOUT A WEK, THEN THE
FISH WILL SUSPEND OFF SHORE (REMEMBER, NO BOATS OR WADING ALLOWED)
AND THE FISHING WILL STINK AGAIN UNTIL THE FALL.
ONE BRIGHT NOTE - THIS IS WITHOUT QUESTION THE BEST PLACE TO GET
A BIG TROUT IN MASSACHUSETTS, BUT COMPARED TO LAKE ONTARIO OR THE
PULASKI AREA IT'S AN EMPTY ROOM.

71.4 | APB in Mass. | SYSENG::NELSON | | Wed May 07 1986 10:38 | 12 |
| There is no question Wachusett is one of Mass.'s top producer's
of large trout, state records in fact. Speaking of which, does
anybody know Mark Zork ? Who is Mark Zork ? Well, he caught the
previous state lake trout record at Wachusett of 21 lb. 15 oz.
If anyone knows him or his whereabouts (last known address Clinton),
Timberland Taxidermy in Bellingham, Mass. are holding his mount
and can't find him. Their telephone number is (617)966-1839.
Can you believe it? I wish I had done that fish. I'm sure I could
find a place to display it.
Steve (waiting for a decent weekend)

71.5 | I'll pass it on... | AKOV68::SHANAHAN | Head for the mountains.... | Wed May 07 1986 11:06 | 8 |
| Steve,
I don't know Mark personally but I will pass this info onto
Gary Bashaw owner of B&B bait shop in Clinton. Gary will be able
to get the info to him.
Off the topic, I heard a rumor that the state record was just
broken recently for a laker coming in at 28 lbs something. Does
anyone know anything about this?

71.6 | The "Ressy" | HEFTY::PARKERJ | | Wed May 07 1986 14:13 | 17 |
| I lived in Clinton for 20+years and fished it from one end to the
other. The best spots are off limits though (dikes). I always had
my highs with bass. Some big hawgs in there. My favorite spot for
bass was on the STerling - West Boylston (north) shore. A lot of
rocks and ledge. It's about a mile walk through the fire roads.
never bothered to go unless I had a bucket of crawdads. I've got
a 6 lb. smallmouth in the freezer i want to have mounted. I've
taken some big pickerel and some really large yellow perch out of
there. Never any large trout. The biggest was a 3+ brown with a
hooked jaw.
By the way, if you see anyone fishing the dikes or spillway or
anywhere else that's off limits, it'll be MDC or other employees
at the dam or reservoir! They used to chase my son away so they
could take his spot. Oh well, the fishing hasn't seemed as hot
at the ressy in the last 5 -7 years. Heard mention of acid rain
causing problems. I'll be driving back out that way in 2 weeks
to thrash some foam on the water. I keep going back!!

| I like to fish the reservoir too. The only trouble is that you
only catch something every 10 times you go. But when you do...
Woo Boy! They're usually decent sizes.

I went to Wachusetts last night and got a couple of smallies
at the north end of the lake off of rt140.
I read a sign saying that they had merc poisoning in them so
I want to try to get some trout tonight instead.
Where and what to fish with is my question, anyone have any
luck ??
thanks

71.11 | It works for me | LUDWIG::KHOUGHTON | | Tue May 07 1991 03:42 | 31 |
| There's only one way to catch lakers at wachusett (as far as I'm
concerned). You can find them almost anywhere right now, but my
favorite spots are gate six off rt 70. (the sand bar) and the
old stone church off 110 (I think). You need a #2 hook, sharpened,
three feet of leader, a 1 oz. slip sinker (egg sinkers are great
if you can find them that big), and the largest shiners you can buy.
A surf caster will help you get all that out to where the fish are.
I've heard of people taking them close to shore, or neer the surface,
especially in april, but my best luck comes from deep holes which
can only be reached with the surf caster. By deep, I mean that when
you cast out and your bait hits the water, start counting. If it
takes 10 seconds or more to hit bottom, your deep enough. if it only
takes three seconds, dont waste your time, cast to another spot.
The two spots I mentioned both have some very productive holes,
you'll know when you hit them.
When a laker takes your bait, he'll snatch it up and run like hell
with it. Let him go. when he stops, he feels safe enough to spit it
out, gum it a bit while turning it around so he can swallow it head
first. Then he will proceed along on his merry way. Now is the time
to introduce yourself.
The most important things to remember are: deep holes produce,
big shiners work, sharp hooks bite back, slip sinker must slip (if
your line becomes twisted around the sinker on the cast, you wont
get nuthin'), and the average wachusett laker fisherman spends 40
hours fishing for every fish he takes. Take my word for it-
IT'S WORTH IT!!
