On sunday afternoon, I went ice fishing at Nubanusit. In all the times I used to ice fish for trout back in Michigan, I never saw action like I had sunday. I landed 4 small Lakers 12 to 16 inches and had 5 other hits. The others were also small, with one exception. I had on a fish that was stripping the line off the tip-up at a fantastic rate. When I grabbed the line to set the hook, the spool kept spinning and tangled the line around the shaft. The fish stopped for a few seconds and started off again. While frantically trying to slow the fish and unwrap the tangle, the fish snapped my 8 lb leader. Maybe next time... flags-up Keith

What does your terminal tackle look like to fish for lakers. I've only fished for warm water species (Bass, Pickerel, etc). You mentioned an eight pound test leader. How long is it? What size hooks do you use. What size shiners? How about weights, do you use split shot? Any help would be appreciated. Guy | |||||

Re:.3 I use a tip-up with a large capacity reel filled with a braided ice-fishing line. I then attach a 4 ft monofilament leader directly to the braided line and use a small split shot near the knot. If you prefer, you can use a barrel connector with no split shot. For the hook, I use a #6 bait holder with a short shank, which I snell directly to the monofilament leader. If treble hooks were legal in NH, I would use them in the same size. For bait, they say smelt are the best, but you can't net them in NH this year. The next best bet, is Large Emerald Shiners fished about a foot off the bottom. Keith |
