63.0. "Price for tilts" by MSEE::KELLEY () Mon Jan 27 1986 08:58

I am looking to pick up some extra tilts. Has anyone
seen them for less than $5.50 any place. Also does
anyone do much jigging? What do you use for bait and
was is the usual catch by jigging methods...?

re.0)	I just bought a couple this weekend and paid 2.69 a piece for
them. They weren't the best ones but the only major difference
was the size of the flag. I'm also new to ice fishing so I'm just
spending as little as possible right now. In fact I went out for
the second time saturday and caught my first fish through the ice.
I caught it jigging with a little spoon type jig with a rubber
	perch eye on it.

I have seen tilts for more $ and less $ this season. Try you local bait shops.

I usually jig while I'm waiting for flags. I use a mitchell 308 (ultra lite
reel) and a jig stick. I use 4lb. test and sometimes a leader (depend what
I'm jigging for and with). If your jigging for small panfish, try a very
small fluorescent jig with a grub or pc. of garden worm. A heavy clip on
weight can help you find bottom to start (hard to do with just the jig on
the end). If the fish are larger and there is a variety of species, I like
to use a small size "Swedish Pimple" with the tail half of a shinner on it.
this seems to drive the picks, perch, bass and sometimes trout wild! i like
to use a heavier leader with this set up.
I know this might sound gross to some people, but the all around best bait
I have used for jigging are perch eyes. I have been fishing them for many
years and most of my fishing buddies do too. You usually don't have to wait
long to have a perch on a tilt or jig one up on a pc. of shinner or worm.
If this does not gross you out (usually hard to gross out a fisherman),
GIVE IT A TRY!!! One last thought about perch eyes is that they stay on the
hook for a long time due to the tough membrane on the eye.
Sorry this turning into a novel, but I like to talk FISHING!!!

I enjoy jigging myself and do it mostly for lake trout. I've
been keeping records of my catches for the past three years
and I've managed to catch more then 50% of my trout by
jigging. Last week I went out and got nothing on the tip ups
but managed to hook two small lakers while jigging. I like
to use various heavy spoons and of course, the good old
swedish pimple. Hooking on a piece of shiner always seems to
help, especially on repeat hits but the lures by themselves
have proven to be productive.

Good Luck!

Steve,

Hang on to that 308 they are becoming quite rare [ well over here anyway ] and

most of the angling 2nd hand columns carry want adds for them.

I have had one since '67 and it hasn't missed a beat so far and I find it

best suited to my fly rod when conditions are wrong for fly.

Its big brother the 300 is reputed to be the best liked spinning reel of all

time.

Sounds like an advert for Mitchell but I've never found anything better

from a cost or warranty perspective [A la Zippo].

Lawson, I HAVE TO AGREE THAT MITCHELL PUT OUT THE BEST I'VE USED. I HAVE
HAD MY 308 SINCE 1967 ALSO AND EXCEPT FOR A FEW SCRATCHES IT TOO HAS NEVER
MISSED A BEAT. I ALSO HAVE A 300 WHICH DOESN'T GET USED AS MUCH ANY MORE.
I HAVE BEEN USING A NEW SHIMANO BANTAM (BAIT CASTER). FOR MY N0N-ULTRALITE
FISHING.
WOULD NEVER PART WITH THE 308 THOUGH!

	Humble 'apologies' lads,

In future i will make my response's easier to read, i have
a 'hang up' with the word 'English' ( old feud ) and tend to prefer
my own tongue.(weaker version of Rabbie Burns)
Basically all i was asking in above response was, do none
of you make your own tilts ,they sound as if the would be easily
constructed @ a moderate cost , my thoughts were around close season
	tackle making etc!

Has everyone seen the tilts from Heritage Inc.? These babies are
    	nice.....brass hardware....they used hard wood....oversized
spools...nice mechanism for the flag....look to be wind proof....
I had five of 'em in my hand until I saw the price....$11.49 at
    	Spags....just couldn't quite justify it.......yet!!!

I know that usually Spags' prices are hard to beat...but if someone
sees these for less....let me know.

Kiv....tell Scap to get "four" of these.....I'll buy his old ones.
