26.0. "NH. Ice Fishing" by TRACTR::DOWNS () Tue Sep 10 1985 09:36

Hey you guys & girls, it's not too early to start talking about ice
fishing. I've been freezing my feet on some of NH's lakes for
a few years now and would like to know how well you have
been doing. I like lake trout and for the past couple of years my
fishing partners and I have had a bob house on Nubanusit Lake in Nelson.
This lake has always produced Lake trout for us but they have
always been too small to keep. For example, my records
indicate that over the last three seasons on Nubanusit,
we've caught over 50 lakers with only two over 15 inches and
the largest being about 3 lbs (not much to eat but alot of
action). We seem to have the best luck with a couple of
methods:
	- Live shiner about 1 foot off the bottom (60 to 95+
          feet of water)

	- Jigging with 3 to 4" swedish pimple right off the
          bottom, same depth of water.

I've also tried Silver lake in Harrisville and Winnipesaukee
in the Wolfeboro bay area, both with little success.

Let's here from you people out there !!!

I LOVE to ice fish. I live on Little Island Pond in Pelham, NH
and just about every Sunday, anywhere from 2 to 6 of us go out and
drown shiners. We get plenty of flags, lots of picks and perch,
but nothing to really write home to mom about. Last week some guy
across the pond pulled in 7 lb. 24" bass. What a beauty! I personally
went and checked it out - complete with scale! I had some doubts
that the "big ones" really did exist!!!! This weekend I'm moving
to a different spot on the pond. I'm due for the big one. I'll
show my brother-in-law that girls DO belong on the pond.

Well, I went ice-fishing for the first time on Saturday, on Paugus Bay
off of Lake Winnipesaukee. It's fun! I was on the ice by 7:00 and had two
fish before 8:30 - not bad, except for two things: one, I didn't get any
more fish the rest of the day, and two, they were perch!! (but one was a
perch LUNKER, I kid you not! 12" and FAT-FAT-FAT! I almost thought of
having him mounted!) I filleted and fried them up that evening. Wow,
perch are good eating, I was surprised!

The weather was beautiful on Saturday. Sunny and almost no wind. Perfect!

I talked to some others out there, too, and was comforted to hear that
they were doing no better. Earlier in the season the salmon action was
furious, I was told. They were hitting like crazy, but of course no one
is allowed to keep any. In fact, you are not even supposed to take them
through the ice - you have to cut the line and let them go without even
taking them out of the water!! (Yeah, right, cut loose my $4.50 Rapalla
lure so the little fishie doesn't have to come out of the water!) From
what I've heard, it seems that the salmon population greatly outnumbers
the lake trout population, yet the salmon are over-protected and the lake
trout continue to be assaulted. Hmmm.

The next day I was out bright and early, but no luck, period. I fished
from 15' to 60' and back to 15'. Something was out there, though, since
some of my minnows just disappeared w/o tripping the flag... ???
Well, ok, I did get one lousy perch around 11:30. (threw him back) A
group of guys fishing in 70-80' only had a dinky perch to show for the
effort. I wonder if the fishing is wierd because of the weather lately?
Anyhow, I'll definitely be there for the derby in Feb.

(Uff! You guys were right, cranking that 10" auger gets to be a bit of work
after a while, but you need something to do out there while you're waiting
for a flag!)
