23.0. "FISHING MAGAZINES" by SPMFG1::CUZZONES () Tue Aug 27 1985 10:59

Anybody got a favorite fishing magazine ? With my newfound interest in
fishing this summer, I've spent some time scouring the racks at the local
newsstand for help. My favorites so far...Bassin' and In-Fisherman. The
former is chock full of information and gets right down to the nitty-gritty,
but it is only about Bass fishing and there's a whole lot of other fish in
the water that I want to know about. It is also rather frustrating to a
bass fisherman from the northeast to have to look at pictures and read about
the monster southern bass that make the locals look like minnows... I mean
I'd be pretty pleased with a two pounder, these guys would use him for bait.
So far, I've found useful articles on fish location, baits and seasonal
tecniques.

In-Fisherman is good all-around magazine but, unfortunately, is geared to the
fisherman in the upper midwest (Minn, Mich, Dakotas, Canada). Aside from
articles on finding 40 pound muskies and walleye, I've read interesting data
on panfish (usually mentioned with disdain in other publications), spinnerbaits,
fish cleaning etc.

On a similar note, the local public TV station broadcasts a weekly fishing show
called "Rod & Reel" sunday afternoons which I find interesting. It appears to
originate in upstate New York and the ones I've watched have covered bass and
salmon and could have some local relevance. The host is, of course, obnoxious.
ESPN has couple of shows that are on early sunday morning when I am either
sleeping or fishing. There is a salt water show later (11:00?) in the morning
that is fun to watch but I'm unlikely to use much of what I've learned. It
looks like ESPN repeats their shows tuesday night, but I've yet to remember to
turn on the box.

MY FAVORITE ALL AROUND INFORMATION GUIDE FOR ALL FISHING AND HUNTING IS
"MOOD" MAGAZINE, ACTUALLY IT'S SMALL NEWSPAPER THAT IS PUBLISHED MONTHY.
I SUBSCRIBE, BUT IT USUALLY IS AVAILABLE IN SPORTING GOODS STORES. ARTICLES
ARE BASICALLY MASS AND NEWHAMSHIRE, WITH A REGULAR COLUMN ON VERMONT AND
MAINE.
SECOND, IS "OUTDOOR LIFE" AND IN PARTICULAR THE SECTION THAT CONTAINS NEWS
OF YOUR REGION.
THIRD, "NEW HAMPSHIRE FINS AND FEATHERS" SOMETIMES HAS SOME GOOD STUFF. THEY
REGULARLY WILL TO A WRITEUP OF A BODY OF WATER AND INCLUDE A ROUGH MAP OF
THE WATER AS WELL AS HOW TO GET THERE. I BELIEVE THIS IS AVAILABLE ON A STATE
BY STATE EDITION.
AND FOR FLY FISHERMEN AND TYERS, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND "FLY FISHERMEN". I READ
THEM ALL AND FIND SOMETHING IN ALL OF THEM. I ALSO SUBSCRIBE TO FIELD AND
STREAM IN ADDITION TO PICKING UP A MAG AT THE LOCAL STORE,WHEN THE MOOD MOVES
ME, OR SOMETHING CATCHES MY EYE.
THAT OUGHT TO GET YOU STARTED. "MASS AND NH OUT OF DOORS" IS THE ONE I ALWAYS
LOOK FORWARD TO THE MOST, AND FIND THE MOST INFORMATIONAL.

Talking about favorite magazines, my favorite is Saltwater
Sportsman. This mag has some excellent indepth articles
for serious fishing. This past month was surf fishing for
Blues off Nauset Light down the Cape, and chumming for
School Tuna off Block Island. I've been introduced and
become addicted to some excellent new fish... Blues, summer
Fluke, Small School Tuna... In addition they cover the whole
country and it provided some great info for fishing in the
Florida Keys this past winter for 'Cuda's, Tarpon and Bonefish.
They gear the magazine for big rig charters, surf fisherman,
and party boaters, so no one gets left out.

	Some other good ones are:
Rod & Reel - first rate flyfishing magazine
Flyfisherman - good, but a notch below Rod & Reel
Salmon, Trout and Steelheader - some real gutsy fishing stories,
	  mainly out in the northwest.
Trout Unlimited - decent local rag, used to be heavy on flyfishing
but they are changing to winders also.
Alaska Outdoors - A dreamers magazine, but some really excellent
	  fishing articles.

I get them all....

Bassmaster (life member)
MOOD (Massachusetts and New Hampshire Out of Doors)
In-Fisherman
Outdoor Life
Field and Stream
Sports Afield
New England Fisherman

I don't get Bassin yet but I will soon. The best on the market (in my humble
opinion) is In-Fisherman. Even though they have alot of articles on the
North central part of the country, and a wide variety of fresh water species,
its still loaded. By the way, my last issue said this year they are going to
add a regional section. I've learned more about bass fishing (my favorite) from
In Fisherman than from most of the specialty (Bass for instance) magazines.

I am not that impressed with Bassmaster. If you don't have a 17 ft ranger and
fish tournaments I question its value. They refuse to acknowledge that the
fish even occurs up here (except of course for the St. Lawrence where they
hold an annual tournament). They also don't recognize us that (heaven forbid)
ice fish. They have very little information for the weekend angler or canoe
fisherman.

Outdoor life is a good general magazine especially if you fish and hunt. I
think it is better than Sports afield and field and Stream.

MOOD is a great way to find out what is happenin here in New England. The
New England fisherman is a weekly publication and I think primarily slanted
toward the salt water buffs It does carry fresh water info., but MOOD does
a better job.

Hope to see Bassin and Saltwater Sportsman soon.

See you on the ponds

Took me awhile to find this old note, but I knew it was in here
    somewhere...

Just wanted to comment on "In-fisherman" magazine. I received my
first issue yesterday and was REAL impressed. Over 300 pages of
what appears to be (I naturally haven't read it all) quality material
on all species of fresh water fish.

I also subscribe to BASSmaster and Bass'n, but I think this one
may end up getting most of my attention.

A very good magizine. They have a T.V. show on the tube on Sunday.
It was on at one o'clock, but I didn't see it this weekend. Anybody
know what the story is?? I'm not real sure, but I think that it
    was on the U.S.A. network.

I'm pretty sure it's on TNN, the Nashville network, right before
    BASSmasters around 1pm on Sundays.

Note: BASSmasters is on (the same show) 4-5 times each Sunday.

IN-FISHERMAN is okay, but they spend a lot of print on walleye and
muskies. I can understand that as they are based out of Minn. For those
who haven't been reading the magazine right along, they are the ones
that ran a series of articles questioning the "panacea" that is
'Catch-n-Release'. Although I usually buy the magazine off the rack,
as a bass fisherman I don't think it offers more than a couple articles
each month (I'm very narrow minded that way). I get much more out of
    BASSMASTER and BASSIN'.

I just sent in my card for SOUTHERN OUTDOORS. An intro offer- seven
bucks for twelve issues. Although it covers the broad range of
OUTDOORS STUFF, I found it to have some very informative BASS stuff.
Except for the gold shiners, the same stuff applies--I don't care
    what Ranger Ron says.
Just kidden RR!! I know whose boat it is.

    Also, RE: an earlier note
My neibor had the same kind of luck with chrome plugs and castmaster
    last Sunday.
    6 trout 12 to 16 inches
    3 BASS 1 to 2#
    1 Pickeral small
All in about 2 hours. I said, "BULLSHI*, I aint goin out in this
crap, YOu"LL nnever catch fish today. They left me home. Oh well
I probably couldn't have stood the excitement.

Having just read this note I thought I might put in my 2 cents.
My favorite magazine is fin and feathers, obviously the vermont
edition. I am told they have other states, and have seen new york.
The reason I like it is it deals with a realistic area for me.
not fishing in africa. good luck to all

I have recently been shown a copy of The Fisherman (New England
Edition). If you are interested in salt water fishing between Greenwich
Connecticut and Gloucester Mass, this is the one for you. It is
a weekly publication, and contains info on what's being caught,
where, on what, etc. It also contains news of interest to fisherman
including boats, tackle, upcoming events and even info about political
    and legal topics affecting fishing.

It seems to be a good source of info whether you live here and fish
regularly or are just planning a trip to the area and need a reference.

I called to get a subscription. A yearly subscription is 17.50 for
50 issues (they take the holiday off).

I hope this doesn't sound like a commercial, but I was really impressed
    with the magazine.

    re:.24

"National Fisherman" is/was a magazine aimed at the commercial fishing
industry (a 'trade rag', if you will).

I think it is published in New England (either Mass. or Maine).

Even though commercial-oreiented, its articles were always interesting,
although it is strange to read product reviews on trawl gear, etc.
This mag always had the most varied array of boat ads (classifieds).
ANything from handmade dories to party boats to 'factry ships' to
    LST's.

If you get the oppurtunity it could be worth looking over

Really....how many times are we going to read about Doug Hannon

out of that idea or what?

You read these articles in almost every issue....yet when you look
at the tournament trail results....no one is hauling in the 10
lbers. With all the time that those fellas spend on the water...
they should land a big one now and then.

IMHO....they are just wasting space. At first I was really excited
