16.0. "Upper Conn. River" by TRACTR::DOWNS () Mon Jun 24 1985 08:28

I'd like to plan a trout fishing weekend for upper NH and have heard some
good things about the Connecticut river. Does anyone fish the upper
Connecticut and if so could they pass on some info and perhaps their,
second or third favorite spots up there? Also is there any good brook
trout ponds up there that is reasonably accessible and productive?

Thanks in advance!!!

I fish the upper Connecticut at least once a year ( First, Second
Third Conn Lakes, Lake Francis0 and find the best times for Salmon are
early after ice out and fall (

October). There are lots of lodges on the
lakes and the N.H. dept of fish and game will give fish reports if you call.

My favorite is on the SEcond Conn Lake and is called The Glen, you can get a
boat for $14 a day( includeing motor and gas) and the lodge is friendly and comfortable,

Thanks for the input. Do you know anything about fishing the Connecticut
river up in that area?

The river begins in a bog above the Third Conn. Lake. The River ( stream )
at that point has lots of brookies and continues to link the Second, First
and Lake Francis. The river between the lakes is usually very productive and
has brookies and rainbows at different points. The river is accessable from
route 3 most af the time and if not can be accessed by a short walk.

Try the lakes, fishing deep in the summer- surface during spring and fall, if
no luck try the river between the First and Second Lakes and between the First
and Lake Francis.

Best luck in the river useing flys and/or ultra light tackle with in-line spinners.

good luck

I suggest that you get a map of the area, I got a hand drawn one that was
nicely done at a store in Pittsburg, shows all the ponds, back roads and
walking trails. Cost about $5 but makes a nice wall decoration after your
trip. I find some of the smaller ponds produce nicely (you need a canoe)
but that the areas that are easily accessable produce in inverse proportion
to their accessability. Also, many areas are Fly Fishing Only so to get the
most out of the trip bring the right tackle. It is a beautiful area, getting
a bit crowded in summer but well worth the trip. Remember to pack your empties
out and dont leave them lying around.

Has anyone fished the Moore Resevoir? (on the Conn. river, above the
    Moore Dam)

I have heard 3rd and 4th hand that the fishing is good up there. Has
    anyone fished it?

A few (or possible a bunch) of us are heading up there after labor day.

Besides smallies and trout, are there pike and walleye? anything else
    intersting?

Has anyone stayed at any of the campgrounds up there?

    Donmac,

I fished the Conn. river near Bloomfield, Vt a few weeks back. This
was in the middle of that hot spell we had. The fishing (for rainbows)
was pretty poor. Local fishermen told me that as soon as the warm spell
hit, it was like someone threw a switch and the fish disappeared. The
water temp at that time was around 70 degrees. It has been a tad
cooler and we've had a tremendous amount of rain since then so
conditions should have improved slightly. By Labor day things could be
quite a bit better. Good luck, and let us know how you do.

     DON,

I usually fish there the week after Labor Day. I fish the side
that is on the high-side of the dam right a Moore Power Station.
I go after Smallies usually. Last year, I caught 2 rainbows 1 on
a stick bait and the other on a grub. So I know there's smallies,
    pearch and trout.
Depending on the cold fronts the fishing and be good to great!

I caught a 3 1/2 lb smallie there 2 years ago. I plan on going up
this year again, but will not be taking the boat.

Dave, we'll be up there for 5 days, the tuesday after laborday thru
saturday. Maybe we'll see ya up there. Do you camp up there? If so,
any recommendations? Since this is a fishing trip, I'm obviously
bringing the boat and will be fishing the whole time.

16.10Update on Moore TripRANGER::MACINTYRETerminal AnglerFri Aug 31 1990 11:0012
By next thursday there may be as many as 10 of us (most from the
notesfile) up at Crazy Horse Campground in Littleton NH, fishing the
Moore Resevoir. If anyone happens to be up there Friday night, stop on
by the campground and say hello, just ask for my site location.

And if anyone else would like to join us fishing, send me some mail and
I'll fill ya in on the details.

And... we could always use some more info from anyone who has fished it
    before, we're all ears!

16.11a nice tripRANGER::MACINTYRETerminal AnglerMon Sep 10 1990 14:0815
We had an enjoyable time up at the Moore Resevoir. The resevoir was
6-8' below normal and the fishing wasn't easy, but we caught fish.

Phil and I caught lots of smallmouth, most were real small (8-10"), a
fair amount of 1lbers, only one nice one (2.5lbs). We also caught
6-7 rainbows and a brown. All the trout (plus a couple bass and a big
pickeral) were great eating (but not as good as the venison that Keith
    Dilsworth brought 8^).

Crazy Horse Campgound was fine. From the sounds of things the
campground used to be a real dive, and the new owners have done a real
    good job with the place.

Doctah, I didn't take any temps, I had a 'combo-c-lector' in the boat
but never used it. Maybe one of the other boats did, Don B. or Keith?

Phil got a real nice brown below the dam on a fly. All of the rainbows
were caught in a pool where a feeder stream came in as a little
waterfall. We tossed worms (yeap, live bait!) up the creek and when
they washed into the pool, WHAM, supper!

The water in the resevoir was real murky. We had antcipated really
clear water and were a little bummed at the murky water.

Were any of my spots useful to you Don?

I was up there but too drunk to drive. Spent the nights at the
East Gate Motor Inn thinking how nice that fall classic trophy will
    look on my mantle.

I fished the spot you mentioned with stumps after the rocks. Had one
nice smallie on a spinnerbait, that I didn't get to the boat. As far
as the incoming streams, most of them were dry. We only found 1
feeder where there was significant water flow, this is where the
rainbows were stacked up. I was really suprized at the dry feeders.

As I mentioned the water was probably 6-8 feet below normal. The was
all sorts of beautiful dry structure along the banks, but at the
waterline it turned to sand in most spots. We caught lots of small
smallmouth and rockbass along the riprap against Rt 93 and the dam. A
few smallies here and there around the resevoir. All my quality bass
(1lb+) were caught above the resevoir, where it's still a river with
current flow, with the better action closest to the white water.
Lightweight white grubs (my favorite river smallie pattern) were the
ticket for me. Also, along the riprap, a rapala 7s invoked a fair
amount of smallfry action one evening.

I meant to try the spot you mentioned across from the dam, by the beach
and launch. (This is the launch I used.) I started trolling my way
over there at one point but got distracted with the trolling and wound
    up bypassing it.

    thanks for the info!
