13.0. "WHAT ABOUT SALT WATER?" by NSSG::MORO () Tue Apr 30 1985 16:19

Sounds like the season is off to a great start. With all the great fresh
water reports, I wonder if there are any salt water fishermen left. Lets
hear from you folks, including the boating and charter fishing enthusiasts.

13.7SALT WATER EXPERIENCESPMFG1::CUZZONESTue Jun 25 1985 13:4737
Hello Anglers.........

I recently rediscovered the pleasure of drowning worms, having foresaken the
pasttime well back in my youth. I had my first ocean fishing experience about
a week ago and had a ball. We (14 of us from the Springfield plant) went out
on a party boat out of Gloucester. The Yankee Lines is a first class
operation and the Yankee Capts is the flagship of the line. At 20 knots, we
were 30 miles out in no time and dropping our lines.

The mates advised using a jig as there had been a lot of dogsharks going after
cut bait the previous days trip. I didn't listen and sure enough, I caught the
first fish of the day; a dogfish. I also caught half the lines on my side of
the boat and recalled what friends had told me years ago; expect to spend half
your time untangling lines. The next fish taken was a decent sized cod, but two
dogsharks attacked and ripped it from the hook before it could be landed.
Shortly thereafter, the captain moved on to likelier grounds and the fish
started hitting fast and furious; lots of cod with a sprinkling of salt water
cats, pollock, cusk, and wolf fish ( a couple over 25 lbs).

The pool ( about $75 and a free day trip ) was won by a 34 pound cod. What a
monster. My best was an 8 pounder, the last fish landed before we pulled up
the anchor and headed home.

We're planning a return trip, probably in the fall. I have to go just to prove
I learned something from watching the captain, mates and cook haul in piles of
cod in their spare time (20-30 fish in 2 man-hours tops). The price for the
trip is $24.50, tackle rental is another $3. The Yankee Capts leaves at 7:00
on saturday and returns at 4:00. If you go, bring a big cooler full of ice and
food ( the cook should fish full-time). I have a brochure I could copy and send
to anyone who wants more info. Others folks in the party who do this often say
Yankee is one of the best in the northeast and I can't dispute that. Even if
you don't catch anything (a remote possibility), you might just get off watching
the Whales and Porpoises. Considering a whale watch cruise cost $15, you can
figure you only wasted $9.50.

good fishing,
Steve

STEVE,
IF YOU LIKED THE YANKEE FLEET , THEN TRY GOING UP NORTH A LITTLE
MORE TO ROCKPORT. IT TAKES JUST UNDER 1/2 HOUR MORE BY CAR BUT SAVES YOU
1 TO 1 1/2 BY BOAT. THEY FISH THE SAME PLACES.
ONLY ONE BOAT AT THE ROCKPORT PIER. I BELIEVE THE MISS ROCKPORT?
BUT NOT AS MAY TOURIST, MORE FISHERMAN. THE BOATS ARE A LOT CLEANER
THAN THE YANKEE, AND THE CREWS AND CAPTS. ARE THE BEST.

I BELIEVE THE PRICES ARE COMPETIVE AND THE TACKLE IS NO CHARGE.

GOOD LUCK AND GOOD FISHING.
BOB

IF YOU WANT REAL FISHING TRY THE YANKEE 3 DAY TRIP COST BIG BUCKS
BUT THIS SPRING DAD AND MYSELF HAD OVER 350lbs. OF FILLET EACH.
YOU HAVE TO CALL TO GET INFO.

Saturday's weather did not cancel the second annual SPO deep-sea outing
from Gloucester on the Yankee Fleet. We were told that the fishing would
be better if we went earlier in the season; we went in June last year.
It was, but the weather was the pits. Probably 20% of the passengers were
seasick, despite medication. Several poor slobs never left the cabin for
nine hours, in fact one poor slob never left the head. The wind was howling,
the temp was in the 30s and the waves were tremendous. You know it's bad
when even the ships mates can't keep their feet. But, fishing was the best
way to keep your mind off the elements, so fish we did.

This years yield differed from last years in several ways. 1) More fish!
I caught 12 and my buddy Stan caught 8. Last year, not counting the
numerous dogsharks, I caught 1. I think I really learned something by
watching the captain and the cook fish last year. Of course, some of it was
luck, evidenced by the 3 I caught through the belly with the jig I was using.
2) Different fish. A lot of Pollack (sp). A few cod. A couple cusk. And
at least a couple dozen Haddock !! (50 folks on the boat). Last year it was
almost entirely cod and a few pollack, cusk and wolffish. 3) Smaller fish.
:-( Last years one fish was 8lbs and the ships pool was won with about a
30 pounder. This years pool winnner was an 11 lb haddock! Nice fish but I
can't believe no one caught a bigger fish than 11 lbs. Maybe this had to do
with the different mix of fish. 4) No dogsharks. This meant we could "park"
in one spot and fish all day.

All in all, a successful outing. Only problem is 3 days later, I still find it
difficult to get a fix on the horizon without feeling a little queazy.

13.1The Beach Bagel ReportNYALYF::HORWITZTue May 13 1986 13:5017
I realize I'm over a year late withthis reply, but I just started
as a "noter".However, I'm willing to give it a shot.

Last week seems to have been the start of the "gamefish" season
here in N.J. On Saturday, while trying to hurl a 3oz. Hopkins into
a 30 knot dry nor'easter I saw birds working over several schools
of what seemed to be bluefish. Back at the car-park I was talking
to some of the retired gents who fish every day. They mentioned
that prior to the wind (mid-week) they had taken blues over 8 lbs.
    and several "short" stripers.

With any luck, I will get down to the beach one evening this week
    and give it a try.

    Regards,
    Rich

13.2 Big Blue fishUSMRW4::CHALIFOUXWed Aug 13 1986 15:4511
Well, Gary C here...lots of blue fish and other stuff to be had
off the coast of Main/Mass/N.H. Bluefish up to 20lbs. taken up at
Bar Harbor this past weekend. I personally saw what appeared to
be several hundred blues running up a small tidal river. So much
for the theorist who says they don't go that far up north. I'll
be heading down to the merrimack river and plum island for some
major surf casting very soon. ....Big fish being taken on surface
plugs of all sorts...shinny, bright flashy lures will do it...also
many polock taken on silver jibs from the jettys.....more to come

I do nothing but saltwater fishing!! as a matter of fact, my friends
and I just came back from fishing in Quincy, ma. Sat. May 2nd.
we trailered my new 22 footer up there and really killed them! We
came back with 122 flounder, which made about 70 lbs. of fillets!
I'll be putting my boat back in it's slip in Branford,ct. this weekend
and start the local fishing season with blackfish and flounder begins!
Later the blues come in hot and heavy! Love that salt water!!!!

13.5DON'T EAT THOSE FISH.....VICKI::DODIERWed May 06 1987 12:0632
...at least not until you watch the show I just did last night
on Nova. It's supposed to be on again on channel 2 this coming
saturday at 2 pm I believe. My wife said something about it being
on channel 11 on thursday night sometime also. As I remember it was
called "Are you swimming in a sewer" or something like that. It talked
specifically about Quincy bay and Boston. It showed in detail Boston's
waste water treatment system and how they dump .5 billion gallons of
waste water a *day* into Boston harbor. New York city was the worst at
1.5 billion gallons of waste water a day. New York also takes their
solid wastes and dumps it 12 miles off the *Jersey shore*. I thought
that was real nice of them.
Beach bagel, I know you were planning a trip to Quincy bay.
This does not look like it would be a good year for it. According
to the show, the Boston treatment plant can't handle the excess
water created by rains. This causes *raw sewerage* to be directly
dumped into the water. This year we have had nothing but rain. There
was also footage of this on the local news when we had all that flooding
earlier this year. Real pretty site, little shit balls floating
off into the water. The raw sewerage isn't the worst thing being
    put in the water either.
One thing that was brought up was that it was thought that the
outgoing tides carried most, if not all of these wastes out to sea.
It has now been learned that about 1/3 of them return on the next
    incoming tide.

I could go on and on but I'll let you decide for yourselves.
You have to see this show to believe it.

    RAYJ

BTW - I plan on taping the show if I remember.

I checked the TV guide and that show "Are we swimming in a sewer"
is on tonight (5/7 Thursday) at 8 pm. Yes, I know this conflicts
with Bill Cosby but you can either set-up the VCR or as I said,
    it's on again Saturday.

    Bon appetite

Wiz,
I can give you my standard info source for Southern Maine; Saco
Bay Tackle Company. Cal Robinson runs it and he is a wealth of info. I
believe that he is a partner in a charter boat, a Blackwatch 31' I think.
There probably are still some in the water that would be willing to go
out for bottom fish.
	Anyway Cal's number is (207)284-4453

I can make some suggestions if you're interested in fishing on the cape
    and around the islands.

    Rock Harbor - Orleans
the Boat is the Terry II and Don Walwer is the captain (508 255 2406)
I havent chartered him in two years, but he is very good. He (and the
rest of the rock harbor fleet) fish primarly off race point, pamet and
billingsgate shoals. The boat is big for cape fishing ~ 40' or so.
Primarly "rope-a-dope" fishing on mono lines. He's more than willing
    to try spinning.

    Saquatucket Harbor (Harwitchport)
The boat is the Shanti and the captian is Bob Lawson (an ex digital
employee who retired to the real world) the numeber is 432-7542
If you call, tell Bob I said hello. Bob fishes the monomoy point for
blues and bass- with some success I should add, and the back side of
nantuckett. (Sankety head, great point, etc) His boat is smaller
and has a tiller at the transom. Bob likes to slip along the rips and
jig leadheads in the white water. It's productive but not the
    relaxing cocktail-style charter

    Falmouth
The boat is the Peptide - Dennis Sabo the captian (564-4296)
Dennis is a retread PHD who lectures occasioinaly in athe mass maratime
acamadey and fishes the rest of the year. He is very active and
concentrates in the waters off martha's vineyard and nomans. Same
stlye as Lawson - jiging in the rips , but Sabo is pretty interested in
light tackle and flyfishing. I didnt have any success with the fly rod
on my trip but we had good luck with light spinning rods. Outside of
booking dates, he may have the boat set up for marlin

    Centerville/Hyannis - Walter Ungermann (362 3638)
Ungermann is quite a charter. He may be in Flordia by now but could
still be around. His boat is somethign of a rocket (two 275hp
outboards) Walter is different and I'm not sure you'd want to use him
if your customer isnt pretty good with a rod. He's not the most
patient or softspoken person in the world........

Give me a call if you'd like any more informantion.....
