8.0. "Lake Onota" by MSEE::POAT () Wed Mar 20 1985 12:01

Does anyone know where Lake Onota is? I think it is in the western
part of Mass. but not sure where at. Also, if you have fished the lake
where is the best place to launch a boat? If you wouldn't mind
sharing your favorite part of the lake with us, that would be ok to.

thanks chuck

    Chuck,

I was born and brought up in Hinsdale, Mass. which is in fact in
Southwestern Mass..(About 40 miles west of Westfield). Onota Lake
is in fact in Pittsfield, Mass. which is 10 miles from where I lived.
You can find it on a Mass. map at about the middle of the state
on the western border. I know there are some huge Northerns in there
and bass are of goodly size. Unfortunately I never fished there
from boat so I don't know where the access areas are. If you called
the Mass. division of Fish and Game they surely could tell you.

I've been living in Vt. for 15 years now, so I have forgotten a
    lot about the area.

    Talk about resurrecting a topic!!

There is an excellent paved launch ramp 2 boats wide with a dock
alongside, a handicap accessible fishing pier and parking lot that
fills up fast on weekends. The lot also services a beach and picnic
    area.

The lake hasn't been too crowded when I've fished it (without much
success). You have to watch out for the sandbar that stretches
across the lake about 2/3 of the way north of the launch ramp. It
is marked. My best fishing there has been for bass in the cove
by the causeway at the north end. They seem to school up just beyond
casting distance from the landlubbers on the causeway :-). The
place is also full of Yellow Perch (I've caught looooooots), but
is best known for trout, pike and pickerel.

I'll be trying it Labor day weekend. Let you know if I catch anything.
