6.0. "BASS IN MASS." by CAR::VEDDER () Tue Mar 19 1985 13:00

A long time ago ( around `75 or so ), a few of us used to fish this
little pond in Massachusetts. I don't remember the name of it but
it is between Westminster and Ashburnham, on the left side of the
road. Don't know if it's any good now, but it used to be fantastic
for large mouth bass. I mean LUNKER bass, not the normal ones in
the two to three pound class. I remember one day when the three of
us were there, fishing from shore with rubber worms. We were all
catching bass fairly regular, when one of the other guys pulled out
a six and a half pounder ( seems as if it's always the other guy ).
The next day we went back with a canoe and my other buddy damned
near fell in while trying to reel in a largemouth that weighed
in at just a shade over ten pounds ( again, the other guy ).
This one is hanging on his wall over the fireplace.

If you happen to be in the area, stop at this place and check it
out. Let me know how you make out. I'd be interested to know if
it's still as good as it used to be.

Oh yeah, the best spot we were able to find was at the end of the
pond on the left side of the road. This area is really weedy and
has alot of lilly pads and stuff likke that. Try some rubber
worms with weedless hooks. There were also alot of sunfish and
stuff, so use a big enough hook where you won't be bothered
with the little guys.

p.s. watch out for the submerged logs and fish close to the shoreline.

adios,

Dave Vedder

You said between Westminster and Ashburnham, but can you be a little
more specific, like what road...!?

6.2CAR::VEDDERTue Mar 19 1985 14:3014
Don't remember the name of the road. But, if you leave Digital drive
(going towards Westminster), hang a left. Then take that road all the
way to the end. Turn left at the stop sign. This is the road that I
was talking about. One end goes to Fitchburg and the other goes to
Ashburnham. Like I said take a left at the stop sign and look for
the pond on your left as you get near Ashburnham.

p.s. They used to like the natural colored rubber worms the best.
Spinners and diving plugs are out of the question because of all
the weeds and stuff. Did have some luck with surface poppers though.

Have fun,

Dave Vedder

I USED TO LIVE IN WESTMINSTER AND GO TO HIGH SCHOOL IN ASHBURNHAM. I'M
VERY SURE THE NAME OF THIS BODY OF WATER IS CALLED "THE REZZIE" BY THE
LOCALS. THE DAMN THAT HOLDS BACK THIS BODY OF WATER WAS BUILT YEARS
AGO BY ONE OF THE FITCHBURG PAPER MILLS, I BELIEVE WEYERHAUSER. THE
ROAD THAT GOES BY THE REZZIE IS CALLED SOUTH ASHBURNHAM ROAD AND
RUNS BETWEEN ROUTE 2A IN WESTMINSTER (ON THE FITCHBURG END) AND
ASHBURNHAM. THE EASIEST WAY TO LOCATE THE REZZI IF YOU'RE FROM OUT \
OF THE AREA IS BY TOPO MAP. IT'S TOO BIG TO MISS.
JUST A SHORT CAST... I ICE FISHED IT THIS WINTER ONE DAY
AND TOOK A MESS OF NICE PERCH 12"+ AND 3 AVERAGE PICKERAL BETWEEN
15-18". ICE FISHING ACTION IS TRADITIONALLY SLOW ON THIS LAKE, BUT
SOMETIMES WORTH IT. SUMMERTIME PRODUCES NICE CATCHES OF ALMOST ALL
WARM WATER SPECIES COMMON TO THE AREA. IT'S A GREAT POUTIN' POND
TOO.]
ONE WORD OF CAUTION. THE ROADSIDE ALONG THE LAKE IS POSTED,
AND THE P[OLICE DO TAG AND TOW CARS, ESPECIALLY WHEN THE WEATHER
WARMS ENOUGH FOR SWIMMING AND BEER DRINKING. POLICE ARE ALSO
PARTICULAR ABOUT PEOPLE ON THE DAMN AND GATE HOUSE. THE PLACE TO
PARK WITHOUT HASSLE OR WORRY IS TO ASK SOMEONE ALONG THE ROADSIDE
TO PARK ON THEIR PROPERTY, OR YOU CAN PARK ON BARREL HILL RD. AND WALK
TO YOUR FISHIN SPOT. IT IS ALSO POSSIBLE TO PARK ALONGSIDE THE RR
TRACKS, HIKE THE TRACKS AND BUSHWACK, BUT YOU'LL NEED A TOPO FOR
THIS, EVEN THOUGH THE DISTANCE ISN'T FAR. THERE ARE SNOWMOBILE TRAILS
THAT MAKE THE WALKING RELATIVELY EASY. GOOD LUCK.

ONE ADDITIONAL THOUGHT. THIS IS CANOE OR CARTOPPER WATER ONLY. YOU
CAN LAUNCH FROM S. ASHBURNHAM ROAD BUT DON'T LEAVE THE CAR THERE.
THERE ARE NO BOAT RAMPS ON THE REZZIE.

re:all

The name of the road is South Ashburnham road and like Mr. Aldrich
just stated the Westminster police do love to make the town revenue
from this area of road. Any of the side roads are okay to park on.
A quick and easy way to get there from route 2 heading west from Fitchburg
is to take the first Westminster exit. Take a left at the end of the exit
towards Fitchburg. Round Meadow pond will be on your right. You will continue
on pass the Old Mill Resturant. You will drive under a railroad tressle and
about a quater of a mile down the road futher take a sharp left. If you
drive pass Monty Tech. High School you have missed the left turn onto
South Ashburnham road. The pond is about 3-4 miles up that road. You will
drive past another large body of water on your right but don't stop there
as it is a private pond and only members of a certin club can fish there.

Another good bass pond can be found in Gardner MA. It doesn't look like
much of a pond but it has produced six pound plus bass last year.
If you know where the Gardner Mohawk Drive In or the P.A.C.C. outdoor
club is you got the ponds. Again if driving on route 2 west from the
Fitchburg area take the route 62 exit towards Barre.
You will first drive by a Burger King and then a McDonalds. At the
lights take a right. You will find the pond on your right a few miles
down the road. You can't miss it. The pond with the biggest bass is
between the main road and the drive-in theater. The other pond has been
stocked with trout as a bonus. Good fishing........

I believe route 62 should be amended to route 68 and the right would
be on route 2A.

YOU CAN BORROW MINE!!

SORRY COULDN'T HELP MYSELF.

I TOOK A NICE 7LBER OUT OF WASHACUM (SP?) IN STERLING ON RT 12.
HOWEVER, IT IS LIMITED TO ONLY CARTOPPERS OR CANOES. THEY STOCK IT
WITH TROUT AS WELL.

ANOTHER POND YOU MAY WANT TO CONSIDER, (I'VE SEEN REGULAR BASS BOATS
ON IT) IS LOWER NAUKEAG IN ASHBURNHAM.

I have had real good luck for Horned Pout at a pond
in North Londonderry. It is off of Hall Rd. If you
go north on 28 it is the first left past the junction
of 28 and 128. It is down a dirt road on the left
just across from First Lumber. They aren't big, but
they are plentiful. I have heard that there are trout
and bass in there also, although I have not seen any.
There are definately eel in there though!

I always use nightcrawlers for hourned pout. We have
our best luck starting just before dark and into the
night. Like I said before, they aren't big, but they
are plentiful. I have had a hard time trying to find
many places in southern N.H. that you can fish from
shore and catch horned pout, but this one is good.
The other thing that bites good there are the mosquitos,
they are more plentiful than the horned pout!

6.17Bass in Comet Pond?PYRITE::HOFFMANBuren Hoffman - Lab Data ProductsWed May 21 1986 13:249
I guess I would probably qualify as a "casual" fisherman. If my two
sons had their way, it would be much more than casual. Anyway, when I
do fish, I prefer bass to any other I've fished-for/caught.

Can anyone point me in the direction of some reasonable bass fishing
somewhere close to Princeton, MA ? Has anyone fished Comet pond (more
correctly, I believe it is Anacomet Pond) in Hubbardston?

6.18Asnacomet/Good Trout PondSYSENG::NELSONWed May 21 1986 14:0119
    Comet Pond is a well known trout pond with some cold deep water;
however, the portion of the pond farthest away from the boat ramp
(I don't have my directions or map handy) contains a lot of rocks
which is inhabited by smallmouths. I've only fished for trout there
and can't say I caught any bass. There is a pond on Rt.31 after
leaving Rt.140 heading toward Fitchburg on the right side called
Paradise Pond. There is plenty of places along the shore to fish
or to launch a car topper. I have caught a few bass here but don't
know of their abundunce. There are a couple of more on Rt.140
Lake Wachusett and Meetinghouse Pond which I don't know about.
Maybe some of the bass people know of these. Right in the area
there is Wyman's Pond. This pond contains a lot of bass and is
probably best fished by boat? Now that I think about it, where
Rt. 31 crosses Rt2 is Flaggs Pond (Sawmill Pond?). I've caught
bass here when I was a kid and Hedley Bray used to rent boats there.
Anybody remember that? I don't know but it seems bass can be caught
almost anywhere at the right times. Anyone else?

If anyone comes down to Franklin for a visit and would like to
enjoy a little sport fishing at lunch time there is a pond ajacent
to the plant on Washington street that has many small bass and the
ocasional large fish (a 9lb pound bass taken in the spring of 86
on rubber worm). I always catch 1 or 2 small ones that I throw back.
I use a rooster tail because there are a few trout and pickerel
that I hear of being pulled out though I never caught them there.
Its good fun for a lunch hour.

That pond used to be stocked by the state. The building on the
other side of it used to be a sportsman's club. I used to fish
there all the time as a kid and got some nice bass out of there.
It may still be stocked for that matter. I still live in town,
but haven't fished there in years. Uncas pond off Summer Street
is another good fishing pond. This is on the Franklin Rod and Gun
clubs' land, but since the pond is stocked by the state, anyone
    can fish there.

As I understand it, Bare Hill pond is open only to Harvard residents during
beach season. Are you fishing it early in the morning when the beach is
closed, or are they not asking this year?

I've heard good things about Bare Hill too. Although I was only there once,
just one bass (1-1) was caught.

    Mike,
I was under that impression as well...My landlord has property
there, and I know some other people that have camps there. I was told
just last friday, that I wouldn't get bothered by anyone (if at all)
until after the 4th of July...(peak Waterskiing season there).

Up until last year, it was residents only...which is bull if ya ask me.
Ive been there 3 times this year...been there all day...and my car was
never towed, I was never stopped by the Pond Patrol (I don't think they
have one anymore)....I wouldn't worry about it....

If you go ...drop me a line, and I'll put you on some hawgs.......Just
throw 'em back if they're under 8 lbs. ;-);-)

Hi All,

I'm new to the "Fishin" file so bear with me if I respond to some of the
older notes.....I couldn't help myself with this one since I also love to hook
into ole mister wiskers once in a while. I frequent a spot in So Hampton, N.H.
It's about half a mile from the town hall, located off Rt 107A. The body of
water is the back river section of Tewksburys pond. They average 1.5 - 2 lbs
and man do they taste good in corn meal. Nightcrawlers seem to work the best.
By the way, we also CHUM with sweet corn at times.

				Keep your line wet!
