| The name of the pond is Gumpus (sp.). The unfortunate thing is
that the access that we used to use has since been posted. Bob
Perron has found out that there "USED" to be a public access
but has not been used for years and has been built on..! There
is one person that lives on the pond that will let you launch
from his property as long as you "ASK FIRST" and do not abuse
the privilege. It is unfortunate that there is no public access
to the pond as it is a good place to pick up some bass.
Does anyone know what the laws are concerning public access to
waters in N.H. In particular in respects to if they are not used
for a number of years that they are no longer considered a
public access.

| Any questions about laws, dates,seasons,etc., can be easily
answered by the N.H. Fish and Game Dep't. In fact they
set up a toll-free number for just that purpose (may only
be toll-free in N.H. though.)
1-800-332-5018 is the number.

| GENE,
Umbagog is a good place to get away from it all but I found the fishing slow
the later part of july. We mostly paddled around the lake to check it out.
There was a bog area by the river on the north west side looked like it might
be good bassin but that day was windy as all heck and couldn't fish it. The
owner of Umbagog Lake Camps told me that there are huge lake trout on the
north east side by the dam, but they are deep during the summer months. We
did notice a lot of rises when the water was calm but I tried everything
you can think of and wouldn't even get a hit. This was about 3 years ago
that I went there and it cost me $7.00 per night to get the island which was
about a half acre. The only thing on the island is a 55 gal drum for a toilet
with a toilet seat and it was in a cove. Oh by the way, there was good pout
fishing in the back side of the cove at night. If you don't want to paddle
to your sight which could be as far as 3-8 miles, you can pay the owner $10.00
or so to bring you and all the gear you can fit including canoe to the site
and pick you up at a time you arrainge for departure. We found all kinds
of natural beaches for swimming any way you want even during daylight because
there are so few people around. The owner is a former ranger and treats his
guest with a lot of respect such as " this is your site and you do what you
want. Just don't litter and make big fires."
anything else?

| Gene, Umbagog can be reached by taking route 16 from N.Conway
all the way to Umbagog. The name of the place is Umbagog lake Camps
which is run by an ex ranger, Jim Willard and his family. It is
located in Errol N.H. and borders both N.H. AND Maine. Either
fishing license is good. You will follow the ANDROSCOGGIN RIVER as
you get closer to Errol. There is great fishing in this river which
contains Salmon and Brown Trout with miles of road access. I suggest
you call 603-482-7795 and ask Jim for more details seeing how it's
been a while since i've been there. Oh by the way, the lake is
14 miles long and camp sites are anywhere from 1/2 mile to 10+1/2 miles
out. You have to specify that you want a island site. I suggest
that you try the one about 6 miles out that sits in a cove, its half
way out and we thought it was great. They seemed to refer to it as the
honey moon suite. Ask Jim to send you a brochure, it has a map of
about a 10-20 mile range of that area.
GOOD LUCK, YOU'LL ENJOY IT!

1533.10 | A lesson in frustration | VIDEO::LEVESQUE | | Mon Jun 06 1988 09:44 | 42 |
| Sometimes you've got to wonder; why do I put up with this frustration?
Saturday I went fishing at a dinky little pond in Hudson. This place
is so small, it doesn't even have a name. Well, the reason I was
fishing there was because I have seen some fairly large fish in
the water, mostly over the beds, and it's rumoured to have given
up bass in excess of seven pounds.
I was having very little luck. In over two hours, I had gone through
half the lures in my tackle box, and didn't even have a strike.
Then I put on a huge crazy-crawler, more out of frustration than
anything else. There was a tree that had fallen down into the water
on the other side of the pond, so I started casting to it, figuring
that it must shelter some large bass. You guessed it, after about
ten casts, I put too much mustard on it and it landed in the tree.
I quickly realized that my grandfathers lure wasn't coming out,
and I had better shag it around the pond and get the lure out of
the tree. The tree was hanging out completely over the water, but
was still alive. I inched my way out to the very end, where my lure
was. After I freed the lure, I lokked in the water. There was a
cloud of baby fish (my guess is bass) lurking under the tree. AND
there was momma, who appeared to be about five pounds. She was not
happy about me shaking the tree.
I ran back around the pond to retreive my pole. Putting on a rubber
worm, I figured I could coax/annoy momma into striking. No luck.
Then it started to rain. I started to make my way back to shore
over the tree. And it was alot easier to maneuver when I didn't
have my pole to worry about. About half way in, the rain subsided.
I decided to cast from my new position. Balancing on the tree trunk,
I lobbed the worm about twenty feet into the pond. Something bit,
and I set the hook. I pulled in about a two pounder to my perch
(pun intended) on the tree. I threw it back, and my wife showed
up to see how I was doing. I went back to my previous position at
the end of the tree, in a last ditch effort to catch the big one
to show wifey.
I was jigging the worm just off the end of the tree when I snagged
a branch. Except it wasn't a branch. It was momma. As soon as I
saw her coming up with the worm in her mouth I set the hook again,
harder. Too hard. I broke the %^&*#&$ line. Frustration wins again.

1533.12 | Bass action | VIDEO::LEVESQUE | I fish, therefore I am. | Thu Jun 30 1988 09:28 | 24 |
| I went fishing at my little pond in Hudson, NH last night. The fishing
was pretty good. I caught about a half dozen bass in an hour and
a half. Most were caught on a rubber worm with a curly tail. One
of the fish ate the curly tail off the worm! I go through alot of
worms that way. The biggest one was close to 4 lbs. I knew he was
going to be the biggest, because he took the longest to come out
of the water. He soaked me on that jump.
That fish wasn't the most memorable of the day, however. It was
the smallest fish I caught. One of my first few casts went over
an overhanging branch. I was using a tiny torpedo at the time. I
reeled in the lure until it was just under the branch. I then picked
it up about 6-8 inches out of the water, and began rocking it back
and forth prior to "the big attempt" to pull it over the branch.
I never got a chance to do this as a small bass jumped out of the
water and intercepted the lure before I could swing it over the
branch. I was dumbfounded. When I got the little bugger in and tried
to remove the hook, he shook his head at the wrong time, and I had
2 of the three hooks on the belly treble in my finger. I let out
a whoop and holler and sort of flung the fish into the air. So much
for cool headedness. The people across the pond seemed to be genuinely
amused. Now it hurts to type :-)

1533.13 | Here's your tip, sir. | VIDEO::LEVESQUE | I fish, therefore I am. | Fri Jul 08 1988 09:40 | 17 |
| When I went fishing at Robinson's last night, a strange thing happened.
I had caught my worm on a submerged branch, and was unable to free
it. I decided to simply break the line, and retie. Unfortunately,
I used my rod to break the line, instead of grabbing the line with
my hands to break it. The end result was as the line broke, the
force of the rod returning to normal catapulted my rod tip off the
rod, over my head, and into parts unkown! What a bummer.
The good part is that Jim (a recent move down from Maine) had long
pants on. He trudged through the surrounding vegetation and actually
found my tip intact. Thank God!

PS- DR Juice bass scent made all the difference last night. All
of the bass were caught within 5 minutes of applying it to a rubber
worm or jig. We went fishless before applying it.

1533.16 | Rt. 111 area | CIMAMT::HEROLD | | Tue Jul 19 1988 15:38 | 24 |
| Southern (I mean SOUTHERN) NH is my neck of the woods. There are
a couple of good ponds/lakes right along Rt. 111. Big Island Pond
(also known as Governors Pond). Kingston Lake (Great Pond), Powwow
Pond and River (not exactly on 111).
I've been fishing Island pond recently since thats all I can easily
reach after work, this year there seem to be NO fish, every once
in a while I catch a fish. (about 1 per trip). Since my buddy
and I are doing so bad, we tried an experiment;
The first day we each used a rubber worm, he used Dr. Juice
and I went plain, we both casted in the same area. That day he
caught our fish.
The next time we went back and I used Fish formula II and he
used Berkely Strike for Bass, I caught the fish. Next experiment,
Fish formula II vs. Dr. Juice.
Is anyone else having trouble getting the fish to bite, this lake
used to really produce, now it's as barren as a desert.
Any tips.

1533.17 | Pawtuckaway got a problem?? | CGVAX2::HAGERTY | Jack Hagerty KI1X | Thu Jun 01 1989 10:57 | 8 |
| I went fishing yesterday at Pawtuckaway lake. It was terrible fishing.
A couple of locals in a canoe said they had not caught a bass in
the last two weeks. (They lived about 1/4 south of the bay of funday)
They said during the winter that the lake was down (by the state
they assumed) where you could walk accross the northern end of the
lake including the Bay and really screwed up the bass fishing. Any
truth to this? We caught two short bass well out of Fundy Bay and
washed most of our harware doing it.

1533.18 | Annual drawdown | ROBOAT::HEBERT | Captain Bligh | Thu Jun 01 1989 13:41 | 18 |
| Many of the larger lakes in NH are drawn down every winter. The Union
Leader usually publishes the list in the fall, which includes the amount
of drawdown for each lake. I think the amount varies from 4' to as much
as 12'. For the past two years Pawtuckaway has been essentially emptied,
going down what they called 12'. All that's been left is the old stream
beds and the hole about 1/2 mile southerly of the twin islands.
Kind of sad, when you consider that my fishing buddy has an 8-1/4 pounder
on his wall from that lake. And I've seen two other 8# + hawgs come from
there over the years.
The usual reason that is published is "to repair dams."

1533.19 | | VAX4::TOMAS | Joe | Thu Jun 01 1989 15:00 | 16 |
| Hey, Lavender!
Fletcher and I hit Pawtuckaway last Friday, 2 PM to about 10 PM and we
picked up about 15 lm bass. Most were 1-1.5 lbs, but Chris did get a 3.5
lber after dark on a topwater lure.
I've seen lots of "perch jerkers" out on Pawtuckaway that claim to be bass
fishing. Judging from their tackle and techniques, it's no wonder all they
get is pickeral, perch and kivvers! So don't pay too much attention to
them. There's plenty of 5 lb PLUS fish in there.
Althought the lake is drawn down every year, there's still plenty of depth
and area after the drawdown to support the fish. Max depth is about 45'.
