| I've done Lake Allagash a few times. I'd advoid the stream as much
as possible, too many beaver dams, but this may have changed since
then.
We carried the canoes and supplies to (I think Johnson Pond?),
paddled across, then down the stream. Still had beaver dams
to get over, but not as many. The Old Town canoes went over
the dams a lot easier than the aluminum jobs. I always liked
the sites at the top end of the lake (when you first come into
the lake. The sites down by the outlet usually get big time
wind during the day. We trolled lures on mono, but you have to
get there pretty early in the season for that. We always were
out of there before Memorial day.
I hope you catch that "brookie of a lifetime". They have them,
over 5 pounds! It is supposedly Maine's premier trophy lake.
If I remember right, live bait is a no no. Lots of regulations,
check them out before you go.

ps Watch out for those float planes on Johnson Pond. You
could be wearing one if not careful! A lot of giudes
put their clients in there. There is a road to the ranger
cabin, but it's off limits to fishermen.

Thanks for the information. I went there last year, took the long tote
road in. From what you say, that is preferable to hauling downriver.
[I will try Eddys(sp?) campsite this year.]
I went on July 4 week last year (first time there) and lots of brookies
and lake trout, no brookies over 18", but a lot of them. It was great!
Also candr my first whitefish, about 20", which I thought was the
father of all brookies until I got it to the canoe. what a battle.
cheers, its time to look for a good tote-cart...
